The artist Mark Hearld finds his inspiration in the flora and fauna of the British countryside: a blue-eyed jay perched on an oak branch; two hares enjoying the spoils of an allotment; a mute swan standing at the frozen water’s edge; and a sleek red fox prowling the fields. Hearld admires such twentieth-century artists as Edward Bawden, John Piper, Eric Ravilious and Enid Marx, and, like them, he chooses to work in a range of media – paint, print, collage, textiles and ceramics. Workbook is the first collection of Hearld’s beguiling art. The works are grouped into nature-related themes introduced by Hearld, who narrates the story behind some of his creations and discusses his influences. He explains his particular love of collage, which he favours for its graphic quality and potential for strong composition. Art historian Simon Martin contributes an essay on Hearld’s place in the English popular-art tradition, and also meets Hearld in his museum-like home to explore the artist’s passion for collecting objects, his working methods and his startling ability to view the wonders of the natural world as if through a child’s eyes.

Dale Chihuly began to work in glass some 30 years ago, inspired by its unique ability to convey and transform color, light, and space. A co-founder of the Pilchuk Glass School, north of Seattle, he revolutionized the American studio glass movement by adapting the teamwork he observed when he became one of the first Americans allowed access to the secrets of Venetian glassblowing. In this first full-scale study of Chihuly's career to date, the distinguished art critic Donald Kuspit broadens our understanding of Chihuly's innovative and avidly sought-after work. Enhanced by superb new photographs of Chihuly's spectacular glass sculpture, Kuspit's essay explores the relationship of medium to artistry and craftsmanship and the dynamics of the creative process. A winner of the prestigious Frank Jewett Mather Award for Distinction in Art Criticism, Kuspit is an ideal interpreter of Chihuly's significance in the world of twentieth-century art. The superb colorplates and the book's dramatic design do full justice to the artist's brilliant multi-part sets, complex groupings, and inventive architectural installations.

Tessa Newcomb's art arises from piercingly clear, pristine perceptions of the everyday and natural worlds. The drawings she continually makes - such as on riotously weedy Suffolk allotments, observing curious, even bizarre happenings in manicured Parisian squares or alongside Venetian canals, and while ambling or cycling among the clear light and spacious landscapes of East Anglia - are a rich imaginative source for her paintings. Born in Suffolk in 1955, daughter of the painter Mary Newcomb, Tessa sees her art as inseparable from ordinary life. Each of her paintings seems to tell a secret story. Their eerily beautiful atmospheres and curiously juxtaposed imagery recall the art of Christopher Wood (1901-1930). Among her sources of inspiration, she counts 'watching slow, atmospheric films', early 20th-century urban photography, 'going places and rail journeys' and reading poetry. This well-illustrated book - partly based on the author's conversations with Tessa Newcomb - is the first survey of this artist of singular vision, with a keen, popular following. It reveals how her subtly multi-layered paintings are illuminated by an interior radiance, an awareness of what she calls 'Spaces and Silences', and a rare, magical poignancy.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh has been hailed as a pioneer of modernism. However, he was perhaps truer to the arts and crafts movement, from which he sprang, than has been realized. Mackintosh was one of a group of architects known as The Four who met as students at the Glasgow School of Art. Macaulay explores the artistic legacy of Mackintosh and his relationship with The Four, as well as the role of their patrons in the development of a new elegance. Macaulay draws extensively on numerous archival sources --- the minutes and correspondence relating to the Glasgow School of Art, educational and ecclesiastical records as well as sketchbooks in Dublin and the rediscovered archive of the Glasgow Art Club. Sadly, what has not come to light, and probably never will now, is biographical information about the private lives of The Four --- but that is perhaps much as they would have wished. What does survive is a body of work --- buildings, furniture, drawings and paintings which continue to be a source of inspiration for architects and artists today. With both historic photographs and modern images of Mackintosh's major works taken by the noted architectural photographer Mark Fiennes, this is an essential and beautiful addition to the Mackintosh cannon and to architectural history.
