Features an introduction to advanced calculus and highlights itsinherent concepts from linear algebra Advanced Calculus reflects the unifying role of linearalgebra in an effort to smooth readers' transition to advancedmathematics. The book fosters the development of completetheorem-proving skills through abundant exercises while alsopromoting a sound approach to the study. The traditional theoremsof elementary differential and integral calculus are rigorouslyestablished, presenting the foundations of calculus in a way thatreorients thinking toward modern analysis. Following an introduction dedicated to writing proofs, the bookis divided into three parts: Part One explores foundational one-variable calculus topics fromthe viewpoint of linear spaces, norms, completeness, and linearfunctionals. Part Two covers Fourier series and Stieltjes integration, whichare advanced one-variable topics. Part Three is dedicated to multivariable advanced calculus, including inverse and implicit function theorems and Jacobiantheorems for multiple integrals. Numerous exercises guide readers through the creation of theirown proofs, and they also put newly learned methods into practice. In addition, a "Test Yourself" section at the end of each chapterconsists of short questions that reinforce the understanding ofbasic concepts and theorems. The answers to these questions andother selected exercises can be found at the end of the book alongwith an appendix that outlines key terms and symbols from settheory. Guiding readers from the study of the topology of the real lineto the beginning theorems and concepts of graduate analysis,Advanced Calculus is an ideal text for courses in advancedcalculus and introductory analysis at the upper-undergraduate andbeginning-graduate levels. It also serves as a valuable referencefor engineers, scientists, and mathematicians.

New from James Stewart and Daniel Clegg, BRIEF APPLIED CALCULUS takes an intuitive, less formal approach to calculus without sacrificing the mathematical integrity. Featuring a wide range of applications designed to motivate students with a variety of interests, clear examples detailing important mathematical processes, and a vast collection of exercises appropriate for students with disparate skill sets, this first edition is perfect for students who need to learn how to apply calculus concepts rather than replicate the formal proofs behind the techniques. Early coverage of exponential and logarithmic functions allows for the inclusion of many interesting applications throughout the text. Available with a range of supplements including Enhanced WebAssign, BRIEF APPLIED CALCULUS makes calculus approachable so any student can understand the concepts and be successful in the course. This textbook provides a calculus-based introduction to economics. Students blessed with a working knowledge of the calculus would find that this text facilitates their study of the basic analytical framework of economics. The textbook examines a wide range of micro and macro topics, including prices and markets, equity versus efficiency, Rawls versus Bentham, accounting and the theory of the firm, optimal lot size and just in time, monopoly and competition, exchange rates and the balance of payments, inflation and unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, IS-LM analysis, aggregate demand and supply, speculation and rational expectations, growth and development, exhaustiable resources and over-fishing. While the content is similar to that of conventional introductory economics textbook, the assumption that the reader knows and enjoys the calculus distinguishes this book from the traditional text.

Calculus Reform. Or, as many would prefer, calculus renewal. These are terms that, for better or worse, have become a part of the vocabulary in mathematics departments across the country. The movement to change the nature of the calculus course at the undergraduate and secondary levels has sparked discussion and controversy in ways as diverse as the actual changes. Such interactions range from "coffee pot conversations" to university curriculum committee agendas to special sessions on calculus renewal at regional and national conferences. But what is the significance of these activities? Where have we been and where are we going with calculus and, more importantly, the entire scope of undergraduate mathematics education? In April 1996, I received a fellowship from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). This fellowship afforded me the opportunity to work in residence at NSF on a number of evaluation projects, including the national impact of the calculus reform movement since 1988. That project resulted in countless communications with the mathematics community and others about the status of calculus as a course in isolation and as a significant player in the overall undergraduate mathematics and science experience for students (and faculty). While at NSF (and through a second NSF grant received while at the American Association for Higher Education), I also was part of an evaluation project for the Institution-wide Reform (IR) program.

Designed to help life sciences students understand the role mathematics has played in breakthroughs in epidemiology, genetics, statistics, physiology, and other biological areas, MODELING THE DYNAMCICS OF LIFE: CALCULUS AND PROBABILTY FOR LIFE SCIENTISTS, Third Edition, provides students with a thorough grounding in mathematics, the language, and 'the technology of thought' with which these developments are created and controlled. The text teaches the skills of describing a system, translating appropriate aspects into equations, and interpreting the results in terms of the original problem. The text helps unify biology by identifying dynamical principles that underlie a great diversity of biological processes. Standard topics from calculus courses are covered, with particular emphasis on those areas connected with modeling such as discrete-time dynamical systems, differential equations, and probability and statistics. Modelling with the Ito integral or stochastic differential equations has become increasingly important in various applied fields, including physics, biology, chemistry and finance. However, stochastic calculus is based on a deep mathematical theory. This book is suitable for the reader without a deep mathematical background. It gives an elementary introduction to that area of probability theory, without burdening the reader with a great deal of measure theory. Applications are taken from stochastic finance. In particular, the Black -- Scholes option pricing formula is derived. The book can serve as a text for a course on stochastic calculus for non-mathematicians or as elementary reading material for anyone who wants to learn about Ito calculus and/or stochastic finance.

The Calculus of Friendship is the story of an extraordinary connection between a teacher and a student, as chronicled through more than thirty years of letters between them. What makes their relationship unique is that it is based almost entirely on a shared love of calculus. For them, calculus is more than a branch of mathematics; it is a game they love playing together, a constant when all else is in flux. The teacher goes from the prime of his career to retirement, competes in whitewater kayaking at the international level, and loses a son. The student matures from high school math whiz to Ivy League professor, suffers the sudden death of a parent, and blunders into a marriage destined to fail. Yet through it all they take refuge in the haven of calculus--until a day comes when calculus is no longer enough. Like calculus itself, The Calculus of Friendship is an exploration of change. It's about the transformation that takes place in a student's heart, as he and his teacher reverse roles, as they age, as they are buffeted by life itself. Written by a renowned teacher and communicator of mathematics, The Calculus of Friendship is warm, intimate, and deeply moving. The most inspiring ideas of calculus, differential equations, and chaos theory are explained through metaphors, images, and anecdotes in a way that all readers will find beautiful, and even poignant. Math enthusiasts, from high school students to professionals, will delight in the offbeat problems and lucid explanations in the letters. For anyone whose life has been changed by a mentor, The Calculus of Friendship will be an unforgettable journey.
