Dale Chihuly, the hugely popular artist who works in glass, celebrates his 70th birthday in 2011. Tacoma Art Museum, in his hometown, owns more than 150 examples of his work and is mounting an exhibition in his honor. Both this book and the exhibition showcase Chihuly's enduring interest in the arts and natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, which are a major influence on his work. For the first time, Dale Chihuly: A Celebration focuses on the importance of these influences. From Native American baskets to wool trade blankets, the gritty Tacoma of the 1960s, and Puget Sound, this exhibition and book follow Chihuly's development and accomplishments and how he grew and evolved while maintaining close ties to Tacoma. The essay by curator Rock Hushka traces Chihuly's creative process and the ways in which his abiding interest in the American Northwest enriches his work. Praise for Dale Chihuly: A Celebration: "This intimate, thoughtful celebration highlights the influences of nature and nurture on a unique talent." -Publishers Weekly

Illuminated by Dale Chihuly's mesmerizing glass sculptures, this beautiful book presents the artist's most recent nature-inspired work. It's been over a decade since New York City hosted a new Dale Chihuly exhibition. Featuring the artist's latest, dynamic glass sculptures on display at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), this book proves that it was worth the wait. Filled with panoramic vistas of garden landscapes transformed by Chihuly glass, this dazzling celebration of the artist's brilliant use of form and color reveals the perfect union between Chihuly's organic shapes and their natural settings. New hand-blown glass sculptures complement the architecture of NYBG's Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, itself considered a work of glass art. In addition to photographs of the site-specific installations, this book features a series of dynamic drawings by Chihuly. As fluid and colorful as the sculptures themselves, these works offer a direct representation of the energy and inspiration behind Chihuly's artistic process. This volume and the exhibition it accompanies show how the Tiffany of our time has brought the art of glass-blowing and sculpting into the forefront of American art, introducing generations of people of all ages to the magic and beauty of glass.

Dale Chihuly's largest permanent installation to date comes to life in Chihuly Bellagio, featuring the commissioned sculpture Fiori di Como at the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. This unique project--Chihuly's interpretation of a garden of flowers--required more than 40,000 pounds of glass and a myriad of metal installation structures created specifically for the site. The sculpture flows across the ceiling of the hotel's main lobby. Chihuly reflects on the work: "Everything about the Fiori di Como was new--the scale, the armature, and the glass. First I had to develop the way the ceiling would look--the depth, new glass forms, the technique for holding the glass, all the safety issues involved." This clothbound book provides sixty-five detailed images of the creative process.

Artist Dale Chihuly has developed many techniques over the past thirty years, including the fundamentals of a team. At the helm of the studio glass movement, he was instrumental in bringing glass out of the factories and into a more experimental environment. Teamwork has become a process integral in the world of glassmaking. As the function and development of Chihuly's work evolved into larger-scale series as well as installations, it became apparent that the roles and structure of the group would now transform into a teamed effort to create a vision led by the master. On average, a unique work by artist Dale Chihuly demands the participation of up to twelve people. The relationship between these artisans is a masterpiece in itself. Team Chihuly is laid out in a chronological order to give the reader a sense of the glass movement for themselves.

In July 1999, Dale Chihuly's most dramatic undertaking--a yearlong millennial exhibition--opened at the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem in the Old City of Jerusalem. Chihuly and an international installation team adorned the aged stone of the former Citadel with seventeen luminous sculptures. Chihuly's love of extremes can be seen in his Jerusalem Wall of Ice, made from sixty-four tons of Alaskan ice. The water from the melting ice was used to irrigate the surrounding land. With 117 full-color images, Chihuly Jerusalem 2000 documents the installation of Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000, and the team that created it. Introduced by affectionate letters to Chihuly's young son about the project, this exceptional volume invites readers to feel the magic of artistic invention and international cooperation.
