As long as feelings are second-class citizens, people will be second class citizens. Experience is an endangered species. An important function of psychotherapy is to make time for experiencing. Psychic taste buds really exist and rarely rest. They feed us each other, gauge states of being, states of spirit. We taste each other's feelings and intentions. An important aim of this book is to build psychic taste buds, not put them down or pretend they don't exist. A positive feeling runs through this book, a love of life, an affirmation. Yet we discover many feel they do not have an impact. A sense of helplessness and impotence in face of awesome forces seems to be increasing. Health is a broad term with many dark threads. A creeping annihilating sense varies from pockets we try not to notice to soul murder that must be addressed. Yet individuals do try, in their private struggles and in the larger social sphere.

Thin Places is an eloquent meditation on what it means to move between cultures and how one might finally come home, a particular paradox in a culture that lacks deep ties to the natural world. During the 1990s, Ann Armbrecht, an American anthropologist, made several trips to northeastern Nepal to research how the Yamphu Rai acquired, farmed, and held onto their land; how they perceived their area's recent designation as a national park and conservation area; and whether as she believed they held a wisdom about living on the earth that the industrialized West had forgotten. What Armbrecht found instead were men and women who shared her restlessness, people also driven by the feeling that there must be more to life than they could find in their village. "We each blamed our dissatisfaction on something in the world," she writes, "not something in ourselves or in the stories we told ourselves about that world. If only we lived elsewhere, then we would be at home." Charting Armbrecht's travels in the mountains of Nepal and in the United States and her disintegrating marriage back home, Thin Places is ultimately an exploration not of the sacred far-off but of the sacredness of places that are between between the internal and external landscape, the self and others, and the self and the land. She finds that home is not a place where we arrive but a way of being in place, wherever that place may be. Along the way, Armbrecht explores the disconnections in our most intimate relationships, how they stem from the same disconnections that create our destruction of the land, and how one cannot be healed without attending to the other.

Dr Bovill is a remarkable person and this book is an eloquent expression of remarkable achievement. When, some seven years ago, I came to the North West from the relative psychotherapeutic luxury of London, I was amazed to discover a busy whole-time general psychiatrist who claimed that she and her staff were giving a comprehensive service for the treatment of psycho neurosis by psychological means. I did not accept the facts but I believed in the genuineness of the person, Diana Bovill. After careful observa tion and enquiry, my initial scepticism turned to admiration. I do not know of any psychotherapist who before has provided such skilled therapy for so many people at once. Another, and in some ways greater, surprise awaited me. Dr Bovill has consistently, dedicatedly, striven to describe clearly, and to evalu ate scientifically, her work - an attempt all too rare amongst psycho therapists. Entering psychiatry at a somewhat advanced age, she achieved the rare, and perhaps unique, distinction of being awarded a Doctorate of Medicine at London University for a study in psycho therapy research, approved by the doyen of British psychiatry Sir Aubrey Lewis.

Phobias ruin lives. But although many people are crippled by intense irrational terrors - whether focused on sex, spiders, social situations or just going out of the front door - reliable new treatments and self-help methods now promise relief for almost everyone. In this lifeline for long-standing sufferers, researcher and consultant psychiatrist Dr Richard Stern offers understanding, reassurance and straightforward practical advice. Considering in turn the commonest phobias and the more unusual variants (fears of flying, farting, dogs and diseases), he provides readers with self-assessment questionnaires and shows them how to break through the constraints of agoraphobia; build up assertiveness and social skills (but control anger); develop freedom from sexual worries and inhibitions; draw up action and thought plans; consider the (useful but limited) option of medication; and find further information and help. Phobias cause immense damage, but no one has to put up with them. This invaluable book will allow sufferers to tackle and beat them.

Maxine Dorfman has it all-sagging jowls, chubby elbows, sexual batteries that need repair, and frustrating fantasies about Burt Lancaster and her dentist, Dr. Ronald Kertler. But, there are two things she does not have: the notorious, hooked Kleinkopf nose that runs in her family, and a faithful husband. Mel, her laid-off CPA husband dumps her for an older woman-a sixty-five-year-old woman. Maxine is left on ground zero in denial, depressed and addicted to macadamia nuts. Hope arrives in the form of Connie Piccini, her best friend who encourages a reluctant Maxine to sign up for Earth Trek, a weeklong fitness adventure in the Catskill Mountains. Three hikes, two hot romances, and one environmental crisis later, transform our heroine from a fearful, depressed victim into a self-empowered woman with passion, power and purpose.

E X C E R P T S from The Shaman in the Disco: it often happens for men that sensual deprivation leads to sexual obsession. Not knowing how to be with his inner alienation, he brings it to his girlfriend and experiences it, inaccurately, as estrangement between them. This perilous move to seek one's psychological moorings in someone else is to a great extent the fulfillment of our cultural fantasy of "love." I see in the image of Dracula, bent over the entranced woman and sucking her blood, the inevitable outcome of a man's desire who has been socialized into a hostile relationship towards all things in himself we in our culture call "feminine." He [Darth Vader] has literally and figuratively opened up, become unmasked, and he and Luke share a moment of unguarded closeness. It will be their first and last, because, along the lines of many father-son scenes like this in American film and literature, the defenses and guardedness fall away only when the father or son is dying. As if in male culture one could only die for-not live with-this sort of closeness. Love requires of us the ability to surrender our ego needs to the greater ideal of union with another; this first necessitates that we can surrender our ego defenses to a greater awareness of and intimacy with ourselves.
