Best-selling author Louise L. Hay has spent her life teaching people that their thoughts create their lives, and she has written numerous books for adults that have helped them discover their own self-worth. Similarly, Louise has always believed that if children could learn the power of their thoughts early on, their journey through life would be happier and more rewarding, with fewer struggles along the way. In this new book, Louise teaches boys and girls about the importance of affirmations—the thoughts and words we use in our daily lives that express what we believe to be true. Within these pages, there are wonderful examples of kids turning "negative" thoughts such as worry, anger, and fear into positive words and actions that express joy, happiness, and love. There are also tips that show children how they can apply affirmations to their daily lives. Vibrant illustrations and simple text make these concepts easy to understand for even the youngest child. Parents and children will have so much fun learning about the power of positive affirmations and what a difference they can make!

The Jesus Affirmations: Using Biblically Based Truths to Transform Your Life utilizes the words of Christ as a foundation upon which is built a program to enhance your life. There is something about the nature of human beings which makes it easy to set ourselves up for failure. We are prone to engaging in negative self-talk and we are prone to believing what we tell ourselves in this way. We envision the most absurd situations in which we are the butt of jokes and not measuring up to the expectations of other, and often tell ourselves what we ‘should’ have done or said. With the Jesus Affirmations we have a collection of positive, life-affirming statements that, when practiced on a regular basis, can set us up for success. The most up-to-date brain research tells us that some of the things we were told about learning by our parents and grandparents are true. “Practice makes perfect” is something that is a reality and can be scientifically measured. The key to remember is that what we practice is what we get good at. When we practice any activity, even once, we cause a message to travel from one nerve cell to the next. Each time we do this there is a strengthening of the myelin sheath that surrounds the shaft of each neuron. Think of this myelin as Teflon on a skillet. Just as Teflon keeps things from sticking to the surface of the skillet, the myelin makes the electrical impulse ‘slide along’ more quickly as it passes through the neuron. The more you practice a particular activity, the stronger and thicker the myelin sheath gets. By practice, then, you improve the ease at which you can perform this action. Imagining a physical skill, such as shooting baskets, or driving a golf ball is easy to envision because they are everyday activities. But this occurs with anything and everything that utilizes nerve fibers – including your thinking. Taking this to the next level I remind you that no action can be carried out without a thought occurring first. Thinking is energy. As Goethe once said, “Energy will do anything that can be done in this world.” As we have learned in basic science class, energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed into something else. So, why not purposefully select those thoughts that we see as desirable, and leave the ones we don’t want alone? We can do this with every moment. In fact, we really are doing this right now. We can’t not do it. With every single thought we have, we make a choice of whether to keep it or leave it. Almost always, when we keep it, we are going to use it to follow up with some action. Sometimes the action is simply to continue practice - the same thought over and over again. Other times we turn our thought into an actual physical action. In The Jesus Affirmations: Using Biblically-Based Truths to Develop Healthy Habits of Mind I have written a set of twenty-five affirmative statements made by Jesus Christ from the Book of Matthew. Accompanying each affirmation statement is a meditation which is designed to encourage further thoughts on the scripture. These meditations are perfect for individual use, or small group discussion. The affirmations alone are designed to be used in practice in a prayerful setting. Repeating the affirmations aloud to yourself, or silently you establish the habit of making positive, life-affirming practices, based on the words of Christ. Dong this on a regular basis has the potential to increase the likelihood of these statements into becoming beliefs and beliefs into actions. Examples of the affirmations used in this book are: “The Holy Spirit works through me”, “I strive for peace in all my actions”, “I share the light of Christ”, and “I will not judge others”. This book has been written as a tool to help you improve your life and enhance your walk with God. My prayer is that you will enjoy The Jesus Affirmations and discover a new way to live a fulfilling life.

Most preaching and teaching in the church engages only one of the senses—hearing. In The Power of Multisensory Preaching and Teaching, Rick Blackwood shows how recognizing and engaging the multiple senses of the congregation can lead to greater impact. Blackwood presents both biblical evidence and scientific research showing that the more senses we stimulate in teaching and preaching, the greater the levels of learner attention, comprehension, and retention. Blackwood addresses both the “why” and the “how” of multisensory communication. Regardless of one’s current skill level, this practical book can help anyone add multi-sensory elements to messages in order to take communication to the next level—more compelling, clear, and memorable. As a result of reading this book readers can be more effective as a communicator and teacher. The book includes tools, examples, and worksheets.

One of the most resilient images of the Vietnam era is that of the anti-war protester -- often a woman -- spitting on the uniformed veteran just off the plane. The lingering potency of this icon was evident during the Gulf War, when war supporters invoked it to discredit their opposition. In this startling book, Jerry Lembcke demonstrates that not a single incident of this sort has been convincingly documented. Rather, the anti-war Left saw in veterans a natural ally, and the relationship between anti-war forces and most veterans was defined by mutual support. Indeed one soldier wrote angrily to Vice President Spiro Agnew that the only Americans who seemed concerned about the soldier's welfare were the anti-war activists. While the veterans were sometimes made to feel uncomfortable about their service, this sense of unease was, Lembcke argues, more often rooted in the political practices of the Right. Tracing a range of conflicts in the twentieth century, the book illustrates how regimes engaged in unpopular conflicts often vilify their domestic opponents for "stabbing the boys in the back." Concluding with an account of the powerful role played by Hollywood in cementing the myth of the betrayed veteran through such films as Coming Home, Taxi Driver, and Rambo, Jerry Lembcke's book stands as one of the most important, original, and controversial works of cultural history in recent years.

This dynamic health-and-wellness education program was developed at the Harvard Medical School by a leading clinician and an acclaimed curriculum designer. It addresses critical issues of body preoccupation and reduces risk for disordered eating in girls (grades 3-8). Emphasizing girls' personal power and overall mental and physical well-being, Full of Ourselves contains a range of upbeat units that foster: increased self and body acceptance; healthier eating and exercise habits; leadership and media literacy skills; and a range of coping skills for resisting unhealthy peer and cultural pressures. Each unit ends with a "Call to Action" to help girls translate their new-found knowledge into positive action at school, home, and in their community. Older girls are trained as peer leaders and given the opportunity to pass along their learning to younger peers. Evaluated with more than 800 girls, this primary prevention curriculum is the first of its kind to show sustained, positive changes in girls' body image, body satisfaction, and body esteem. Educators, health professionals, counselors, and parents will find Full of Ourselves the ideal resource for helping girls make healthy choices for themselves.

This timely book addresses one of the biggest single problems facing society today -- at-risk behavior in one quarter of our nation's youth -- and provides strategies for prevention and treatment that can be implemented in the schools, in the homes, and by helping professionals in a variety of settings. Whether the term at-risk connotes a local school district's problems with child and adolescent suicide and school dropouts, the correction system's concerns about juvenile delinquency, or the health system's concerns with teen pregnancy, child abuse, and AIDs, the individuals labeled at-risk need the ongoing help of professionals -- and this book can set the stage.
