Geomorphologists played a major role in the 1960s and 1970s in terrain research as the potential of the computer was realised for both storing and manipulating landform information. With growth in the subject area, further technological development, and a growing input from other disciplines, much of this research has moved into the domain of GIS and Remote Sensing, where the involvement of geomorphologists has inevitably been reduced, despite the importance of this type of research to geomorphology in general. This book comprises selected and full-refereed papers from a recent BGRG Annual Conference which was held with these issues in mind. The book contains both review and original and significant research papers that consider recent methodological developments in, and the constraints of, current terrain monitoring and modelling methods in geomorphology, along with the application of these methods to specific geomorphological problems. By providing up-to-date research by leaders in the field of terrain study this book will be of enormous value to undergraduates, research students and research scientists in geomorphology, mapping science and GIS and Remote Sensing, as well as those working in industry who use, or need to apply terrain research methods.

This volume consists of twenty chapters addressing different aspects of the theme of fluvial processes and environmental change. The overall coverage is broad; scientifically, (from modelling to alluvial dating), geographically (from arid zone flash-flooding to glacial meltwaters) and in time (from contemporary process studies to the Quaternary). The introductory chapter sets the context, which is an attempt to show how studies of fluvial processes can help us in understanding and therefore predicting the impact of environmental change on our rivers, riverine resources and landscapes. Environmental change includes both climatic factors, however caused, and human impacts on river basins. The differentiation of these two factors is discussed in several chapters whilst others take a more holistic approach. Both climatic and human factors have, and will remain, to act together and so their interactions need to be understood. Fluvial Processes and Environmental Change is divided into five sections, commencing with the slope-catchment scale and proceeding to studies of channel response, then floodplain processes and floodplain response and finally two studies from glacierised basins. The volume originated as a two-day session of the British Geomorphological Research Group and contributors from Europe, the USA and Australia were included in order to provide a wide perspective on the topic. This book will be a valuable reference for postgraduates and researchers in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, Quaternary science, geology and environmental science.

First published in 1959, Walford''s guide to reference material achieved international recognition as a leading bibliographic tool across all subject areas. But, in the 1990s, the web transformed the information universe; and so we have now transformed Walford. The New Walford (TNW) Volume 1: Science, Technology and Medicine is the first volume of a radically different guide. Published over 3 years, TNW will form the most substantial work of its kind in the English language. This book provides a pathway through the huge quantity of information now accessible via the web. The types of material cited have been greatly widened to reflect the revolution brought about by the use of networked information; but we have made sure that print resources are not ignored where these are still valuable. If you are approaching a subject for the first time, TNW will get you on your way, guiding you to the best starting points for your query. For the information professional, TNW''s new way of categorizing resources reflects the fundamental changes that have taken place in the scientific, business, political and social information landscapes. Who is it for This new reference book will be valuable for professionals worldwide who need to suggest resources to people who are relatively unfamiliar with the nuances of a topic and who need to know where to start. The focus is on resources that are most likely to be found and used within public, government, education or business information services. If you are an LIS professional responsible for developing and revising a reference collection, new to reference work, staffing an enquiry desk, a research worker or student, you''ll welcome publication of this new work - it''s your paper portal to the world of reference resources. Multinational contributors present articles on a wide range of themes but with important convergences of interest on critical topics. A group of papers on tectonic and general approaches reviews the role of randomness in process models and provides a novel theoretical analysis of the relationships between tectonic and erosional forces. Selections on channel processes reflect current interest in gravel bed rivers, related to their widespread occurrence in mountain areas and in braided systems. Articles on valley heads bring together views from several, sometimes conflicting, research approaches. The final group of contributions illustrate the range of problems to which theoretical methods in geomorphology can now be applied.

Understanding the relationship between landslides and climate change is crucially important in planning a proactive approach to hazard and risk management. Advances in geohazard modelling and prediction enable us to be better prepared for the impacts of climate change, but there is still a need for effective risk management and informed planning policy to improve the safety and sustainability of communities at risk. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events has highlighted our vulnerability to the impact of climate change, and has resulted in enormous human and economic loss. This book presents the Proceedings of the International Conference on ‘Landslides and Climate Change – Challenges and Solutions’, which was held in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, UK in May 2007. The volume considers the practical experiences of hazard management, risk governance and response to climate change, and will be of interest to engineers, planners, practitioners, regional and local authorities, academics and politicians.
