The Mistress becomes the submissive… Ever since Master Damien left her broken-hearted several years ago, Greta has found solace and confidence in her new identity as Mistress Scarlet. Spurning men altogether, she deals only with the fair sex. But Master Gallant has thrown her world topsy-turvy by requiring her submission. After several years in the Orient, Charles Gallant has returned to the Red Chrysanthemum, where members indulge in carnal pleasures both wicked and wanton. He knew Mistress Scarlet when she was Miss Greta, a most delightful submissive then joined to the rogue Damien. Now that she is free, Charles has devised a way to claim her for his own. With new instruments of pain and pleasure obtained from his travels, he intends to reawaken Greta to the raptures of submission. Greta, however, is not about to surrender herself without a fight. She would like nothing more than to make him rue the day he took her on in their first fateful challenge. But Master Gallant’s skills prove far more formidable than she expected, enflaming desires she had thought lay safely dormant. Will the Master or the Mistress prevail? Or will the unexpected return of Master Damien undo them both?

“Ravage Me.” No man has ever resisted the charms of Miss Terrell before, so she is more than surprised when Master Gallant refuses to grant her request and have his way with her. A former slave from the West Indies, Terrell makes a living at the Inn of Red Chrysanthemum, where patrons take carnal pleasures to wicked and wanton extremes. Her only prospect for a comfortable life is to become the mistress of a man with means. Sir Arthur, a wealthy Member of Parliament, is just such a man. Having staked his claim of her, he expects her full devotion. But Terrell cannot quell her scorching desire for Master Gallant, whose deft hand and command of rope bondage inflame her deepest, darkest cravings. Charles Gallant, however, is committed to training Miss Katherine, a neophyte, in the ways of submission. When done with this assignment, he expects to place his full attention upon his own election to Parliament. Succumbing to Miss Terrell would be a disastrous mistake. For her sake, he would not wish to incur Sir Arthur’s wrath. For his own, he risks the endorsement of Sir Arthur, whose support would assure him victory at the polls. Miss Terrell, however, is intent on seducing Master Gallant. Only one thing can stop her, but it will devastate them both. Brad Smith, a “funny, poignant, evocative” (Dennis Lehane) crime novelist, debuts a new series set in upstate New York featuring jack-of-all trades, Virgil Cain, who must clear his name of two murders while on the run from the law in this spirited country noir. Mickey Dupree is one of the most successful criminal attorneys in upstate New York, having never lost a capital murder case. That is the upside of being Mickey. The downside: Mickey has a lot of enemies and one of them drives the shaft of a golf club through his heart, leaving him dead in a sand trap at his exclusive country club. The cops, led by a dim-witted detective named Joe Brady, focus their attentions on Virgil Cain. Just two weeks earlier Virgil told a crowded bar that “somebody ought to blow Mickey’s head off,” after the slippery lawyer earned an acquittal for Alan Comstock, the man accused of murdering Virgil’s wife. Comstock, a legendary record producer, gun nut, and certifiable lunatic, has returned to his estate, where he lives with his wife, the long suffering Jane. It appears to Virgil that the fix is in when Brady immediately throws him into jail with no questions asked. In order to set things right, Virgil escapes from jail, determined to find Mickey’s killer himself. Aside from a smart and sexy detective named Claire Marchand, everybody is convinced that Virgil is the culprit. When Alan Comstock is discovered with six slugs in his body the day after Virgil’s escape, his guilt is almost assured. Now it is up to Virgil to convince everyone of his innocence—by finding the killer before he winds up as the next victim.

This award-winning novel of love, survival, and agonizing regret in post–WWII Brooklyn “belongs on that small shelf reserved for American masterpieces” (The Washington Post Book World). Winner of the National Book Award and a modern classic, Sophie’s Choice centers on three characters: Stingo, a sexually frustrated aspiring novelist; Nathan, his charismatic but violent Jewish neighbor; and Sophie, an Auschwitz survivor who is Nathan’s lover. Their entanglement in one another’s lives will build to a stirring revelation of agonizing secrets that will change them forever. Poetic in its execution, and epic in its emotional sweep, Sophie’s Choice explores the good and evil of humanity through Stingo’s burgeoning worldliness, Nathan’s volatile personality, and Sophie’s tragic past. Mixing elements from Styron’s own experience with themes of the Holocaust and the history of slavery in the American South, the novel is a profound and haunting human drama, representing Styron at the pinnacle of his literary brilliance. This ebook features an illustrated biography of William Styron, including original letters, rare photos, and never-before-seen documents from the Styron family and the Duke University Archives.

Buddhist Approaches to Sexuality

Is there a Buddhist discourse on sex? In this innovative study, Bernard Faure reveals Buddhism's paradoxical attitudes toward sexuality. His remarkably broad range covers the entire geography of this religion, and its long evolution from the time of its founder, Xvkyamuni, to the premodern age. The author's anthropological approach uncovers the inherent discrepancies between the normative teachings of Buddhism and what its followers practice. Framing his discussion on some of the most prominent Western thinkers of sexuality--Georges Bataille and Michel Foucault--Faure draws from different reservoirs of writings, such as the orthodox and heterodox "doctrines" of Buddhism, and its monastic codes. Virtually untapped mythological as well as legal sources are also used. The dialectics inherent in Mahvyvna Buddhism, in particular in the Tantric and Chan/Zen traditions, seemed to allow for greater laxity and even encouraged breaking of taboos. Faure also offers a history of Buddhist monastic life, which has been buffeted by anticlerical attitudes, and by attempts to regulate sexual behavior from both within and beyond the monastery. In two chapters devoted to Buddhist homosexuality, he examines the way in which this sexual behavior was simultaneously condemned and idealized in medieval Japan. This book will appeal especially to those interested in the cultural history of Buddhism and in premodern Japanese culture. But the story of how one of the world's oldest religions has faced one of life's greatest problems makes fascinating reading for all.

" Pride and Prejudice" and the language of flowers... When Fitzwilliam Darcy leaves the inn in Lambton after a tense but fruitful visit with Elizabeth Bennet, her words cultivate his hopes. "Less naturally amiable tempers than Mr Bingley's have found ways to forgive you." Has she excused his flaws of character and errors in judgement? While dining at Pemberley, Elizabeth is confounded when Darcy says of her scent, "Now I find I am more fond of lavender than ever... certainly even more fond of it than I was in, say, April." Has he pardoned her intemperate assault on his pride? As her esteem blossoms into love and his desire flourishes into devotion, the meanings of every leaf and petal allow Elizabeth and Darcy to express emotions too vulnerable to speak aloud. But can messages in fronds and leaflets save their fragile hearts when scandalous news arrives from Longbourn? Perhaps flowers do not always say it best. Join garden writer Linda Beutler (Gardening with Clematis, 2004 and Garden to Vase, 2007) as she plants herself in Jane Austen's most admired novel, bringing her love of all things blooming with her. The gardens at Pemberley may never be the same!
