Little Veronica likes hanging out at Mrs. Life's porch. She can see the whole town from the steps, and Mrs. Life is fascinating in the way that she keeps track of all sorts of numbers and information in her little spiral-bound notebooks. So it's surprising to Veronica when the always-nice Mrs. Life has an argument with Mr. Quickel, the school health teacher and wrestling coach, about the cost of mowing her lawn. Soon, Mrs. Life has started to insinuate things about Mr. Quickel, his marriage and what he might or might not have done with a boy who ran off from the town to live life as an openly gay man. Soon, the entire town is turning on Mr. Quickel with rumors and threats and destroying his sanity. Before too long, Veronica starts to see what Mrs. Life's real motivation is, and what dark secrets she keeps in one of her spiral-bound notebooks. A short story.

Teaching Popular Culture

Beyond Radical Pedagogy

Teaching about the media and popular culture has been a major concern for radical educators. Yet in recent years, the hyperbolic rhetoric of "critical pedagogy" has come under attack, not only from theoretical perspectives such as feminism, anti-racism and postmodernism, but also in The Light Of Actual Classroom Experience. The Notion That Teachers Might "liberate" students through rationalistic forms of ideological critique has been increasingly questioned, not only on the grounds of its political arrogance, but also because of its ineffectiveness in practice. This book seeks to move beyond the limitations of these debates, and to explore positive alternatives. It contains a broad international range of contributions, covering practice from primary schools right through to higher education. The authors draw on diverse perspectives, including poststructuralism, postmodernism, cultural studies, anti-racism and feminism; yet they share a willingness to challenge radical orthodoxies, and to offer positive practical alternatives.

Led Zeppelin and Philosophy

All Will Be Revealed

Led Zeppelin, who bestrode the world of rock like a colossus, have continually grown in popularity and influence since their official winding up in 1980. They exasperated critics and eluded classification, synthesizing blues, rock, folk, rockabilly, funk, classical, country, Indian, and Arabic techniques. They performed the alchemical trick of transmuting base led into gold—and platinum—and diamond. They did what they would, finding wisdom through personal excess and artistic self-discipline. “Not a coda to Zeppelin’s legacy, but a blast of metaphysical graffiti as relevant today as the first time we heard the opening chords of ‘Stairway to Heaven’. From Kant to ‘Kashmir’, from Freud to ‘Fool in the Rain’, Calef and company explore Zeppelin’s music in an introspective, suggestive manner worthy of both a blistering Page solo and a bawdy Bonham stomp.” —BRANDON W. FORBES, co-editor of Radiohead and Philosophy “Led Zeppelin’s albums, personalities, live performances, art work, myths, influences, and more, all come under the microscope. Compelling insights and observations add more depth to a subject that continues to thrill and inspire. Each chapter is driven by an unquenchable thirst for Zeppelin knowledge and pulls the reader deeper into the world of Led Zeppelin . . .” —DAVE LEWIS, editor, Tight But Loose

Excerpt from Words That Grip: Number Twenty-Four of a Series of Modern Business Talks Last Tuesday morning we received a call from Mr. And Mrs. James Monroe, who live on their farm, two and one-half miles south of Mill Valley. They had come to the city for the express purpose of examining in person our line of dairy equip ment. On April 5, 1913, Mr. Monroe bought from us one of our AA machines, and this purchase led to last Tuesday's visit. I found the machine such a wonderful help to me, Mrs. Monroe said to us, that I told my husband we'd better run up and see for ourselves what else we could get. We are busy people and our time is worth money, but two or three days in the city will be well spent, if we can get hold of other dairy equipment that will help us as the AA machine has done. You know that time is worth money on the farm, too; labor saving equipment in the dairy means actual dollars to us, and a great many of them. If dollars count with you as they do with Mrs. Monroe, let the AA machine earn them for you. Just write the one word dollars on the enclosed card, with your name and address, and mail it to us. We have vital things to tell you. A thousand letters of each kind were sent out to farmers' wives, the lists being selected so that the first set of letters should reach prospects of a class exactly like that to which the second set was addressed. It was the aim of the company to make all the factors in the experiment equal except the letters themselves.
