Drawn from the archives of major Zen centers in America and interviews with some of the most seminal figures of American Zen, including Philip Kapleau, Bernie Glassman, and Walter Nowick, One Bird, One Stone presents the notable encounters between teachers and students, the moments of insight and wisdom, the quotable quotes, and the humor of Zen as it has flowered in America over the last hundred-plus years.

Frederich Abel knows he’s not normal, but being adopted age seven by an elite soldier isn’t why. It lies deeper inside - a morbid, unhinged savagery. Invisible. Deadly. Luckily, his father helped him control it with a mixture of weapons, combat and survival training. Now his father is dead, and the shadow has emerged stronger than ever. He flees in panic, ending up in cold, grimy Berlin. His life on the edge, Ida’s scream through the rain pulls him into action. He’s forced to kill, unaware that the perpetrator had dangerous friends - powerful enough to take on world governments. Now he must decide; flee again, or face the darkness - both inside and out. ‘An Assassin Is Born’ is the intriguing first episode in the ‘Two Birds One Stone’ crime-action book series.

Zen Traces

Exploring American Zen with Twain and Thoreau

As Zen takes root in the West, new forms arise. For centuries Zen masters have tested their students with “koans” and “capping phrases.” A koan is a spiritual paradox that must be solved intuitively. A capping phrase is a trenchant comment. Both are meditative practices that reveal deeper truths about the self and, ideally, lead to enlightenment. In Zen Traces, Buddhist scholar Kenneth Kraft plays off these practices in a new idiom. He selects passages from four sources: traditional Zen, present-day Zen, Henry David Thoreau, and Mark Twain. When a koan-like story about a contemporary Zen teacher is paired with a pithy comment by Mark Twain, something fresh emerges. “In this lovely book, Ken Kraft provides a unique opening for American Buddhism and American wisdom in general. The reader will come to fresh and spacious new insights and enjoyments… Cheers for Zen in America and a deep bow to Ken Kraft!”—POLLY YOUNG-EISENDRATH, Ph.D., author of The Present Heart: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Discovery “I highly recommend this delightful book of East-West wisdom—full of surprise, insight, wit, and piercing beauty.”—KATY BUTLER, author of Knocking on Heaven’s Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death

There are many smiles and now readers can examine the Barbarian smile/s at the end of each chapter. This work is a continuing look at the ups and downs of modernization in Thailand. Said progress makes Thailand one of the better choices for expat residence. The reason so far has been high-tech and low prices. This is a heady mix and attracts many foreigners even for medical care. As things change quickly, especially in Bangkok, it is good to have frequent updates as to the people, culture and events. The Smile/s books aim at analysis and humor at the same time. In the beginning with Siam Smile/s the focus was mainly on Thais and their bags of tricks. The effort was to give foreigners a clue as to what to expect through comical situations. However, after assiduously studying local people, it finally comes about that the Barbarians, those wonderful Western visitors, are worthy of a good look as well. The result has been a succinct glimpse of how simple European-US people have a difficult time with the basics of complex Thai culture. At the same time, Thais wedged into their modality bio-stasis have no idea about the Barbarians visitors or of their cultures. At times it nearly causes vertigo to spot Thais doing Mental Erase to things they don’t like and foreigners going toe-to-toe with them using denial. Most humorous of all is when Thais and Barbarians simultaneously dodge reality. Reality is the serious Adult world not the denial, pretending and dodging that many Thais and aliens engage in every day. All of this points to a planetary meltdown and human IQ in the West down many points. In the end, Bird Poop Farang Smile/s is a kind of manual for those who appreciate cultural tools and are ready to have a good laugh.

Twenty three year old Jill Scoville, a brilliant software engineer, is seduced and corrupted by a greedy company that cares only about profits. She was recruited right out of college with a $300,000 starting salary, an offer she couldn't refuse. The windfall is three times typical salaries paid by companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft. But Jill is worth every penny. Her employer, Inverse Risk Management, is a private espionage firm whose primary client is the United States government. They hired Jill because she created a completely undetectable spyware program called Wizard. She designed it for anti-terrorism work but refuses to sell it or give up control because it would be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. The government can't use Wizard directly because hacking a terrorist's computer is against the law. Instead they rely on private espionage contractors like Inverse Risk Management to gather information for them. But Inverse Risk Management has other nefarious plans for Wizard and once they wrest control from Jill they will earn billions from it, illegally of course. Jill won't give it up so IRM threatens her freedom and ultimately her life. In the end Jill finds a clever way to outsmart them. Or does she?
