A completely updated and revised edition of a bestselling book that has helped tens of thousands of people learn how to network effectively, Success Runs in Our Race is more important than ever in this fluctuating economy. With scores of anecdotes taken from interviews with successful African Americans -- from Keith Clinkscales, founder and former CEO of Vanguarde Media, to Oprah Winfrey -- Fraser shows how to network for information, for influence, and for resources. Readers will learn, among other things, how to cultivate valuable listening skills, which conferences blacks are most likely to attend when looking to build their business network, and how to effectively circulate a résumé. More than a guide for personal achievement, this is an information-packed bible of networking that also seeks to inspire a social movement and a rebirth of the "Underground Railroad," in which successful African Americans share the lessons of self-determination and empowerment with those still struggling to scale the ladder of success.

Psychologists have always been interested in how children's development is related to their early experience. From their first studies of "maternal deprivation" to their latest investigations of "within-family variance," psychologists have probed the effects of children's early lives. While researchers have been tracking down answers to questions about early experience, however, the questions have kept one step ahead of them. In the beginning, it seemed enough to ask about the mother's influence on the child. Later, it was found necessary to include the father, and still later, siblings. But even as psychologists broadened their search to include the entire family, the ecology of early childhood shifted to include those outside the family -- in nursery school and day care, with nannies and peers. Today, in this society, even the youngest children live in complex worlds of home and beyond. Taking a look at the complex worlds of contemporary preschoolers, the authors question how the components of these worlds contribute to children's development. Some of the questions they pose include: * Do mothers have as significant an influence on children who spend time every day with another caregiver as they do on children who are home all day? * How predictive of development are children's experiences in nonfamilial caregiving environments? * Do experiences in these other environments have the same links to development as similar experiences at home? * Does knowing about children's experiences in both home and daycare environments increase our ability to predict their development? The answers to these questions are not readily available in the existing research literature. Nevertheless, they are important to those who would understand the context of child development, either as a window into human development or as a reflection of contemporary childhood.

From the trials of families experiencing divorce, as in Anne Fine’s Madame Doubtfire, to the childcare problems highlighted in Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker, it might seem that the traditional family and the ideals that accompany it have long vanished. However, in The Family in English Children’s Literature, Ann Alston argues that this is far from the case. She suggests that despite the tales of family woe portrayed in children’s literature, the desire for the happy, contented nuclear family remains inherent within the ideological subtexts of children’s literature. Using 1818 as a starting point, Alston investigates families in children’s literature at their most intimate, focusing on how they share their spaces, their ideals of home, and even on what they eat for dinner. What emerges from Alston’s study are not so much the contrasts that exist between periods, but rather the startling similarities of the ideology of family intrinsic to children’s literature. The Family in English Children’s Literature sheds light on who maintains control, who behaves, and how significant children’s literature is in shaping our ideas about what makes a family "good."

These “learning adventures” provide real-world applications for concepts taught in school, as well as enrichment for any homeschool curriculum. Family Learning promotes the idea of making learning an unexceptional part of everyday family life. With these fun, easy learning activities—which can be shared in the kitchen, in the backyard, in the car, on vacations— all parents, no matter what income or educational level, can help their children develop an interest in learning and develop a richer understanding of the world around them. “Even a little Family Learning,” says author and educator William F. Russell, Ed.D., “will help children succeed in school and in life.” Family Learning identifies hundreds of library books (all with Dewey classifications) and other free or inexpensive learning resources, and it provides over a hundred web links to videos that help parents explain and demonstrate concepts in all school subjects including character development. For the parent who asks, “How can I help?” this is the perfect place to begin.
