In Post-War Britain cultural interventions were a feature of fascist parties and movements, just as they were in Europe. This book makes a new major contribution to existing scholarship which begins to discuss British fascism as a cultural phenomenon. A collection of essays from leading academics, this book uncovers how a cultural struggle lay at the heart of the hegemonic projects of all varieties of British fascism. Such a cultural struggle is enacted and reflected in the text and talk, music and literature of British fascism. Where other published works have examined the cultural visions of British fascism during the inter-war period, this book is the first to dedicate itself to detailed critical analysis of the post-war cultural landscapes of British fascism. Through discussions of cultural phenomena such as folk music, fashion and neo-nazi fiction, among others, Cultures of Post-War British Fascism builds a picture of Post-War Britain which emphasises the importance of understanding these politics with reference to their corresponding cultural output. This book is essential reading for undergraduates and postgraduates studying far right politics and British history.

In Europe, the far right is gaining momentum on the streets and in parliaments. By taking a close look at contemporary practices and strategies of far-right actors, the present volume explores this right-ward shift of European publics and politics. It assembles analyses of changing mobilization patterns and their effects on the local, national and transnational level. International experts, among them Tamir Bar-On, Liz Fekete, Matthew Kott, and Graham Macklin, scrutinize new forms of coalition building, mainstreaming and transnationalization tendencies as aspects of diversified far-right politics in Europe.

English summary: This edition of Aurel Kolnai's War against the West (1938) brings one of the first English-language critiques of Nazi ideology to a German-speaking audience interested in contemporary approaches to critically examining Nazism. Kolnai's main goal was to warn the Western world that Nazism threatened its core and its way of life. He accomplished this in his discussion of the basic elements of Nazi ideology, such as anti-Semitism, racial nationalism, and the anti-liberal concept of a people's community (Volksgemeinschaft), which, in his view, amounted to replacing Christianity with the political religion of race.

This book focuses primarily on continuities and discontinuities of fascist politics as manifested in discourses of post-war European countries. Many traumatic pasts in Europe are linked to the experience of fascist and national-socialist regimes in the 20th century and to related colonial and imperialist expansionist politics. And yet we are again confronted with the emergence, rise and success of extreme right wing political movements, across Europe and beyond, which frequently draw on fascist and national-socialist ideologies, themes, idioms, arguments and lexical items. Post-war taboos have forced such parties, politicians and their electorate to frequently code their exclusionary fascist rhetoric. This collection shows that an interdisciplinary critical approach to fascist text and talk—subsuming all instances of meaning-making (oral, visual, written, sounds, etc.) and genres such as policy documents, speeches, school books, media reporting, posters, songs, logos and other symbols—is necessary to deconstruct exclusionary meanings and to confront their inegalitarian political projects.

Roger Griffin offers a radically new conceptual framework for the study of fascism by locating its driving force in a distinctive form of utopian myth, that of the regenerated national community destined to rise up from the ashes of a decadent society ("palingenetic ultra-nationalism").

The explosion of new themes and working areas in social sciences in the aftermath of the Cold-War stimulated the 'cultural turn' of the previous decades and strengthened the position of the notion of 'civilisation' as a unit of analysis and locus of academic debate in the fields of history, philosophy, sociology, political science, and international relations. Given the fabricated and standardised nature of recent literature on political, economic and socio-cultural aspects of globalisation, it is crystal clear that historically and philosophically enlightened works written from the perspective of civilisational transformation will provide the much needed sophistication to conventional social science analyses trying to elucidate the organising principles of the global order. This novel collection represents a path-breaking work in the field of global/civilisational studies by constituting an interdisciplinary and theoretically-informed platform on which complex debates on the political, economic, socio-cultural, philosophical and ecological aspects of the global order could be conducted. The editors, Sadýk Ünay and Muzaffer þenel, managed to gather a truly original collection of articles from some of the leading authorities and promising academics on the theme of global orders with special reference to a civilisation transformation covering a wide spectrum in time and space from Antique Greece to the Islamic World, from Europe to the US and from East Asian history to current globalisations. Contributions rooted in the disciplines of history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, political science and global political economy are craftsmanly combined to give the reader a holistic vision towards the possibility of multiple civilisational experiments and global orders. This book which boldly endeavours to transcend narrow boundaries of conventional academic approaches and Western-centric prejudices in various branches of social sciences will be a must-read for students of globalisation, cultural studies and macro-history.

During the 1919 port riots—in Glasgow, London, Liverpool, and Cardiff, among other cities—crowds of working-class whites targeted black workers, their families, their businesses, and their property. These riots were a manifestation of global unrest that affected Britain, parts of its empire, continental Europe, and North American during and after the wake of the economic struggles engendered by World War I. This volume reconsiders the economic and social causes of the riots and their impact on Britain's relationship with its empire and its colonial subjects, especially the effects of repatriation and the longer-term consequences for the black British workers and their families.
