Excerpt from Pitman's Shorthand Writing Exercises and Examination Tests: A Series of Graduated Exercises on Every Rule in the System and Adapted for Use by the Private Student or in Public Classes The chief object of this work is to provide the student of Pitman's Shorthand with a series of exhaustive Exercises on every rule in the system. An examination of the arrangement of the Exercises will show that they have been prepared in such a way that the student may not only thoroughly master each principle as it is reached in the course of his study, but that he is enabled at the same time to acquire a very extensive knowledge of words and the outlines for them, and also to commence the practice of writing from dictation almost from the beginning of his study of the theory. Facility in writing and in reading shorthand may therefore be obtained along with a perfect mastery of the principles, and thus the student will be saved a good deal of valuable time. It is scarcely necessary to say that this work is not intended to take the place of "Pitman's Shorthand Instructor" or any of the other text-books of the system. It is supplementary to those, and the Exercises herein contained will be most correctly written, and with the greatest benefit to the student, if he will take care always to refer to his text-book before commencing to work the Exercises on any rule. Attention to this, and to the brief directions at the head of the Exercises, will enable the student to work through the various sections with few or no mistakes. This alphabet later was adapted to 13 languages.

Excerpt from Simplified Phonetic Shorthand: An American Exposition of the Isaac Pitman Phonography These Lessons are in complete accord with the latest Isaac Pitman Phonography and all the well-edited Pitman shorthand magazines. The simplest and most frequently-used principles are presented and applied first; the more difficult come later. No duplicate letters, or letters written upward and downward, are used until easy matter can be written with facility. No form once learned requires to be changed. The words practiced in the Theory Lessons are written in the same way when reporting. Position is taught from the first; but all words that are not con tractions are vocalized, in every Lesson, in order to facilitate progress. All contractions, not in conflict with principles learned, are used as soon as each principle has been explained and the Exercises practiced. Each Lesson occupies only one page, and no principle, except the halving, requires for its elucidation more than one Lesson. The first thirty Lessons, of one page each, clearly explain and fully illustrate, all the principles of Isaac Pitman's shorthand. The next forty Lessons contain Correspondence Speed Practice, with full instructions how to become successful amanuenses. The last thirty Lessons prepare for verbatim reporting, and furnish sufficient practice to enable students to become very fast writers. The Amanuenses' Speed Practice has never before been printed. It is the result of thirty years' teaching of the Isaac Pitman system. The Reporting Lessons and Instructions are the result of knowledge acquired through years of actual reporting work by a successful teacher. American teachers, with these Lessons, will produce faster and more accurate writers than was possible before in the same time. Quality, not quantity; simplicity, not complexity; business require ments, not philosophical dissertations, have been the great aim. The Pitman text-books are printed from engraved characters which no writer can conform to. These Lessons are reproduced from script executed by the senior shorthand instructor of the New York Business College, and are easily imitated by the student. Excerpt from The Young Folks' Cyclopædia of Common Things The arrangement is the same as in other cyclopaedias, as the work is intended to be but a stepping-stone to the more com prehensive ones for adults, and as it is deemed of importance to accustom the child early to the forms and methods which ex perience has shown to be the best. It has been thought proper, however, to omit all abbreviations, and in most cases to put the scientific classifications and etymologies at the end instead of at the beginning of articles, where they will be less likely to destroy the continuity of the narrative, and to blunt the child's interest. While it is not expected that the work will be made a text-book in any of the departments treated in it, it is yet hoped that both pupil and teacher may find it a valuable adjunct to all the more important studies pursued in school, and that it may be thought worthy of a place wherever a knowledge of common things is a necessity. A large number of works have been consulted and freely used, and the writer, without giving any extended enumeration of authorities, desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the following ones in particular: The American Cyclopaedia; John son's Universal Cyclopaedia; The Encyclopaedia Britannica; Cham bers' Encyclopaedia; Tomlinson's Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts Ure's Dictionary of Arts, Manufactures, and Mines; Goodholme's Domestic Cyclopaedia; The Popular Science Monthly; Harper's Monthly; Scribner's Magazine; St. Nicholas; The Science Prim ers, edited by Professors Huxley, Roscoe, and Stewart: Holt's Hand-books for Students and General Readers; Packard s Guide to the Study of Insects; Hooker's Child's Book of Nature; and the works of Audubon, Wilson, Baird, Brewer, Agassiz, Storer, Huxley, and Figuier.
