Combines acupressure and massage to treat pain using elastic tape • Shows how the use of an elastic, adhesive tape works with the body’s own motions to combine the actions of acupressure and massage • Presents both therapeutic and preventative techniques for acute and chronic pain • Contains step-by-step instructions illustrated in full color detailing how to self-treat pain in all parts of the body Sufferers of chronic pain well know the frustration of treatments involving endless rounds of drugs or expensive physical therapy--that may or may not offer relief. In Acupressure Taping, authors Hecker and Liebchen present a comprehensive guide to a new method of pain treatment--acutaping--which offers a much simpler and more effective alternative. In acutaping, elastic tape is placed over the afflicted area in accordance with related acupuncture points. During the course of normal movement throughout the day, the elastic tape provides a gentle but consistent massage to the inflamed area. Because the skin adheres to the tape, it is shifted against the subtissue during motion, causing lymph tissue to drain and connective tissue to be massaged. The authors show that most bodily dysfunctions can be self-treated through this innovative method. Combining elements of Chinese medicine with osteopathy, acutaping produces a method of treatment for ailments ranging from back pain and tennis elbow to menstrual pain and migraines. Acutaping is an easy and effective treatment--without side effects--that offers welcome relief to sufferers of chronic pain.

his text blends current mainstream understanding (such as research, and pathophysiology) of chronic pain and integrative treatment wisdom. It provides both mainstream and CAM practitioners a reference tool to provide good and effective information and clinical decision-making on treatment options for people suffering from chronic pain. The how and why pain is epidemic is discussed. The approach is on the symptoms of pain, and how pain is individually expressed rather than the diagnoses of pain. Diagnoses are often misidentified, misunderstood, or multiple terms exist for a similar or potentially the same condition. To avoid this, the text will instead talk about expressions of pain. Pain anatomy presents the physical underpinnings for the chemical/hormonal, neurological, and soft tissue/fibrotic tissue explanations of pain. In the book visuals and diagrams will help the reader understand the function and dysfunction of pain. The material is grounded in research, providing basic reasoning for the body-based and mind-body approaches as it pertains to the theoretical constructs. The pedagogy is introduced, outlining the relationship between CAM and allopathic healthcare, and patient-centered therapeutic approaches as the frame for clinical decision-making. A variety of movement modalities and mind-body approaches are discussed and each chapter will include: a. Theoretical approach to treating pain/how the approach addresses current pain theories b. Assessment techniques: interview questions, measurement tools and techniques c. Treatment plan, techniques, modalities d. Self-care approaches e. Re-evaluation, measure of progress f. It is with great pleasure that we present to you a collection of over 200 high quality technical papers from more than 10 countries that were presented at the Biomed 2008. The papers cover almost every aspect of Biomedical Engineering, from artificial intelligence to biomechanics, from medical informatics to tissue engineering. They also come from almost all parts of the globe, from America to Europe, from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific. This set of papers presents to you the current research work being carried out in various disciplines of Biomedical En- neering, including new and innovative researches in emerging areas. As the organizers of Biomed 2008, we are very proud to be able to come-up with this publication. We owe the success to many individuals who worked very hard to achieve this: members of the Technical Committee, the Editors, and the Inter- tional Advisory Committee. We would like to take this opportunity to record our thanks and appreciation to each and every one of them. We are pretty sure that you will find many of the papers illuminating and useful for your own research and study. We hope that you will enjoy yourselves going through them as much as we had enjoyed compiling them into the proceedings. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman Chairperson, Organising Committee, Biomed 2008

This new resource instructs students and clinicians in splint fabrication techniques and related interventions for the upper extremity, and highlights anatomical and biomechanical principles specifically related to splints. It defines the purpose of splints, and offers associated indications and precautions. Intelligently organized and generously illustrated, each chapter includes clinical hints, and a specific section dedicated to splinting for a spectrum of diagnoses and populations. Indexes provide a user-friendly cross-reference that lists splints by name and splints by diagnosis to assist the reader in usage of the manual. Also provides insight into the clinical experience with emphasis on containing cost while maximizing time efficiency. Good health is something we all aspire to, but it’s so much more than just being free of disease. A perfectly functioning body, tranquil mind, and vibrant spirit working together harmoniously create the joy and happiness that put the good in good health and the worth into a life worth living. Our Inner Ocean describes ancient and new holistic modalities of practitioner-applied bodywork and revitalizing self-care practices. These illuminate our human potential and awaken our ability to attain and maintain perfect health and well-being. These modalities act as a springboard from which to dive into our inner ocean—the realm of wisdom within that is entered by making the body, breath, and energy our allies. This mystical space of awareness, intuition, peace, and love can become the resting place of the spirit, subtly working its magic on ourselves and others. Bodywork has long been recognized as a way to help people feel better physically, but the magic of touch can also help us tap in to the wisdom of the body, discover the power of the energy that permeates it, and evoke its innate healing ability. Self-care practices such as yoga, qi gong, breathwork, and meditation help us become our own healers. When we pass through these portals into the inner ocean, we can reduce stress and pain, release blockages, prevent and resolve dysfunctions, and ignite our spiritual nature. And in doing so, we make the world a better place.
