Christian Living . . . the lifestyle of the believer in conforming to the standards of the Bible and confronting the spirit of the world system. Issues . . . a point or matter, the decision of which is of special or public importance. A dictionary can define the terms, but tackling the tough issues of the Christian life requires skillful study and balanced reflection upon the whole of Scripture. Vital Christian Living Issues: Examining Crucial Concerns in the Spiritual Life draws upon the insights and study of numerous evangelical scholars and writers to address crucial questions and issues of contemporary life. Some of the chapters included are: ""What is Spirituality?"" by Charles C. Ryrie ""Re-examining Biblical Worship"" by Kenneth O. Gangel ""Sarah as a Model for Christian Wives"" by James R. Slaughter Christian readers, church leaders, and pastors will appreciate the insight and guidance of Vital Christian Living Issues. About the Contributor(s): Roy B. This third volume of The Journal Of Claude Fredericks is his journal for the year 1943, a Wanderjahr that begins with a spring in Cambridge, where Volume Two ended, but with Fredericks, having left studies at Harvard, living now in a room at Maud Bemiss house on Nutting Road near the Cowley Fathers, seeing various friends from earlier, Brie Taylor, John Simon, Anthony Clark, Paul Doguereau, the George Sartons, and making new friends as well. The summer is spent in a cabin on the shore near Belfast Maine, writing and studying still and coming to know the family that lives on the hill. In September, after spending ten days with Paul Doguereau and Fanny Mason in Walpole New Hampshire on the beautiful Mason estate overlooking the Connecticut and a month in New York living in an apartment on University Place and seeing his friend May Sarton and coming to know Muriel Rukeyser and Julian Beck, he heads with his friend William Quinn to Iowa to live with several friends of theirs who also have left Harvard, in particular Michael Millen and Paul Rail, all of them proclaiming in different ways, as Quinn and Fredericks do in theirs, their objections to Americas part in the war that had begun in December 1941. After two weeks Fredericks leaves to stay with a friend in Chicago, Martha Johnson, and to settle in and write about the troubling events of the previous days and then go on to Missouri, to pay filial pieties to members of his family there and after that go south with his mother to Mexico City for a week and then with her to Acapulco for ten days at Christmas, a spot at that time still undiscovered and with only two small hotels. Finally at the years end he heads back east to New York, where he has plans to settle down and live forever, in the city he had always loved the most of any he knew.

This pioneering volume of essays explores the destruction of great libraries since ancient times and examines the intellectual, political and cultural consequences of loss. Fourteen original contributions, introduced by a major re-evaluative history of lost libraries, offer the first ever comparative discussion of the greatest catastrophes in book history from Mesopotamia and Alexandria to the dispersal of monastic and monarchical book collections, the Nazi destruction of Jewish libraries, and the recent horrifying pillage and burning of books in Tibet, Bosnia and Iraq.

The Getty Research Journal publishes the original research underway at the Getty and seeks to foster an environment of collaborative scholarship among art historians, museum curators, and conservators. Articles explore the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum and Research Institute, as well as the annual themes and ongoing research projects of the Research Institute. Shorter texts highlight new acquisitions and discoveries, and focus on the diverse tools for scholarship being developed at the Getty. This issue features essays on early modern alchemy; portraits of the Orsini family; a decorative design for a Borghese palace; the Eruditi Italiani archive; the collecting habits of Louis-Philippe, duc d'Orlans; Flix Bracquemond's sketches of the Paris Commune; the art dealer David Croal Thomson; the Russian avant-garde book Mirskontsa; Malvina Hoffman's Heads and Tales; and Yves Klein at Galerie Schmela. In a new section about tools of art historical scholarship, authors discuss the Spanish translation of the Art & Architecture Thesaurus and the creative potential of digital architectural taxonomies. Short texts examine ancient Roman terracotta fragments, prints by Albrecht Drer, designs for the Palacio Salvo in Montevideo, the textile collection of Ulrich Middeldorf, a New York "pottery happening," and the German writer Christa Wolf.
