Stevie and Maison have a great friendship where they travel back and forth between the Overworld and the human world. Maison has earned some fame for battling off the mobs at her school, but the attention has also brought about cyberbullies DestinyIsChoice123 and TheVampireDragon555, who have hacked her computer and discovered the portal! Now, through complex coding, the cyberbullies have turned the Overworld into eternal night and unleashed a pack of zombies, allowing their griefing to reach a whole new level. Things become even worse when DestinyIsChoice123 and TheVampireDragon555 are bitten and turn into zombies themselves. Because they’re human and not Minecraft characters, they have all the powers of a zombie while retaining their intelligence, creating a new breed of zombies. TheVampireDragon555 is even able to control and rule over the zombies, letting him raise his own army. Stevie and Maison run for the village to warn everyone, but it’s too late: all the villagers have been turned into zombies. In the midst of the eternal night they’ll have to fight off zombies, and find supplies to make potions to save the villagers and the Overworld. Stevie has been having repeated nightmares about the mysterious figure known as “Herobrine.” Some say Herobrine is an old ghost story. Some say he’s a virus. But no one believes he is real…except maybe Stevie, whose nightmares are telling him that Herobrine is going to take over the Overworld. His cousin Alex has come to visit, and during one of her explorations, she finds a music disc that predicts the destruction of the Overworld! Are Stevie’s nightmares and the music disc connected? Stevie and Alex hook up with Stevie’s best friend Maison, and the three quickly begin looking for answers. While they look, Herobrine is drawing ever closer. Someone is stealing the villagers’ most precious belongings, including Stevie’s cat, Ossie. People are angry and turning against one another. And there are mysterious signs appearing around the Overworld. Stevie, Maison, and Alex must unearth more music discs, piece together clues from the nightmares, and, ultimately, confront Herobrine—the most feared being of all—at his dark home in an abandoned temple high atop a forbidding mountain. The fate of the Overworld is depending on them. Today antitrust law shapes the policy of almost every large company, no matter where headquartered. But this wasn't always the case. Before World War II, the laws of most industrial countries tolerated and even encouraged cartels, whereas American statutes banned them. In the wake of World War II, the United States devoted considerable resources to building a liberal economic order, which Washington believed was necessary to preserving not only prosperity but also peace after the war. Antitrust was a cornerstone of that policy. This fascinating book shows how the United States sought to impose—and with what results—its antitrust policy on other nations, especially in Europe and Japan. Wyatt Wells chronicles how the attack on cartels and monopoly abroad affected everything from energy policy and trade negotiations to the occupation of Germany and Japan. He shows how a small group of zealots led by Thurman Arnold, who became head of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division in 1938, targeted cartels and large companies throughout the world: IG Farben of Germany, Mitsui and Mitsubishi of Japan, Imperial Chemical Industries of Britain, Philips of the Netherlands, DuPont and General Electric of the United States, and more. Wells brilliantly shows how subsequently, the architects of the postwar economy—notably Lucius Clay, John McCloy, William Clayton, Jean Monnet, and Ludwig Erhard—uncoupled political ideology from antitrust policy, transforming Arnold's effort into a means to promote business efficiency and encourage competition.

The Second Attack on Pearl Harbor

Operation K and Other Japanese Attempts to Bomb America in World War II

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor a second time in March 1942 during Operation K, it was the longest shore-based bombing mission of the war, lasting nearly 36 hours and covering more than 4,750 miles. The operation involved two Kawanashi H8K "Emily" flying boats taking off from the Marshall Islands and using submarines to refuel. Although their bombing was ineffective because of cloud cover over Pearl Harbor, according to the author, the attack nevertheless affected the American defense posture. A longtime reporter and aviation journalist, Steve Horn not only provides a wealth of new material and technical data in his book, he also tells an exciting story, and his work will appeal to a broad audience wanting to learn about the rarer aspects of the Pacific campaign. Among the other Japanese missions he describes are the bombing of the continental United States by a tiny floatplane launched from a submarine, and the launching of thousands of bomb-carrying balloons, intended to ride the jet stream across the Pacific and create panic and terror in American cities. Horn explains that when the Japanese could not determine what effect these "wind weapons" were having on their enemy, they stopped producing them. The war's end, he says, halted a plan to bomb the Panama Canal. In chronicling these mostly unknown plans and operations, the author adds an important dimension to the historical record.

How Veteran Politics Shaped the New Deal Era

The period between World Wars I and II was a time of turbulent political change, with suffragists, labor radicals, demagogues, and other voices clamoring to be heard. One group of activists that has yet to be closely examined by historians is World War I veterans. Mining the papers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion (AL), Stephen R. Ortiz reveals that veterans actively organized in the years following the war to claim state benefits (such as pensions and bonuses), and strove to articulate a role for themselves as a distinct political bloc during the New Deal era. Beyond the Bonus March and GI Bill is unique in its treatment of World War I veterans as significant political actors during the interwar period. Ortiz’s study reinterprets the political origins of the "Second" New Deal and Roosevelt’s electoral triumph of 1936, adding depth not only to our understanding of these events and the political climate surrounding them, but to common perceptions of veterans and their organizations. In describing veteran politics and the competitive dynamics between the AL and the VFW, Ortiz details the rise of organized veterans as a powerful interest group in modern American politics.

" With New Line Cinema's production of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the popularity of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien is unparalleled. Tolkien's books continue to be bestsellers decades after their original publication. An epic in league with those of Spenser and Malory, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, begun during Hitler's rise to power, celebrates the insignificant individual as hero in the modern world. Jane Chance's critical appraisal of Tolkien's heroic masterwork is the first to explore its "mythology of power"--that is, how power, politics, and language interact. Chance looks beyond the fantastic, self-contained world of Middle-earth to the twentieth-century parallels presented in the trilogy.

A decimated Shiite shrine in Iraq. The smoking World Trade Center site. The scorched cityscape of 1945 Dresden. Among the most indelible scars left by war is the destroyed landscapes, and such architectural devastation damages far more than mere buildings. Robert Bevan argues herethat shattered buildings are not merely “collateral damage,” but rather calculated acts of cultural annihilation. From Hitler’s Kristallnacht to the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s statue in the Iraq War, Bevan deftly sifts through military campaigns and their tactics throughout history, and analyzes the cultural impact and catastrophic consequences of architectural destruction. For Bevan, these actions are nothing less than cultural genocide. Ultimately, Bevan forcefully argues for the prosecution of nations that purposely flout established international treaties against destroyed architecture. A passionate and thought-provoking cri de coeur, The Destruction of Memory raises questions about the costs of war that run deeper than blood and money. “The idea of a global inheritance seems to have fallen by the wayside and lessons that should have long ago been learned are still being recklessly disregarded. This is what makes Bevan’s book relevant, even urgent: much of the destruction of which it speaks is still under way.”—Financial Times Magazine “The message of Robert Bevan’s devastating book is that war is about killing cultures, identities and memories as much as it is about killing people and occupying territory.”—Sunday Times “As Bevan’s fascinating, melancholy book shows, symbolic buildings have long been targeted in and out of war as a particular kind of mnemonic violence against those to whom they are special.”—The Guardian
