This book explores the challenges faced by the Japanese economy and the Japanese banking industry following the financial crisis that emerged around the turn of the last millennium. The author explores how the Japanese financial crisis of the late 1990s engendered huge restructuring efforts in the banking industry, which eventually led to even more sweeping changes of the economic system and long-term deflation in the 2000s. The discussion begins with an overview of the unconventional monetary policy launched by the Bank of Japan at this time, while banking administrative policies maintained their strict code of governance. The author describes how, just as recovery seemed possible, the twin disasters of the Lehman shock and the Great East Japan Earthquake buffeted the recovering economy, and pushed Japan again into deflation. The book also looks to the very recent past, with the sudden advent of Abenomics in 2013, with its three-pronged approach, which was intended to break the deflationary mindset. Finally, the author projects what the future of the banking industry in Japan might encompass, as looming demographic changes gradually threaten both the economy and the banking industry.

Bank Risk Management in Developing Economies: Addressing the Unique Challenges of Domestic Banks provides an up-to-date resource on how domestically-based banks in emerging economies can provide financial services for all economic sectors while also contributing to national economic development policies. Because these types of bank are often exposed to risky sectors, they are usually set apart from foreign subsidiaries, and thus need risk models that foreign-based banks do not address. This book is the first to identify these needs, proposing solutions through the use of case studies and analyses that illustrate how developing economic banking crises are often rooted in managing composite risks. The book represents a departure from classical literature that focuses on assets, liabilities, and balance sheet management, by which developing economy banks, like their counterparts elsewhere, have not fared well. Contains fifty cases that reinforce risk management best practices Provides a consistent chapter format that includes abstract, keywords, learning focus, and outcomes Summaries, questions, and glossaries conclude each chapter

Banking today has become unduly complex because new forms of risk such as technological, compliance and reputational risks are evolving and growing. They amplify the fundamental risks inherent in any bank – those of credit, market, operational and liquidity. While established concepts and principles of risk management flourish, new prescribed practices such as those of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision continually unfold over the years. All in all, the discipline can appear complicated to many. Fortunately, there is universal consensus as to what constitutes sound risk management applicable to banks everywhere. Bank regulators and banks themselves are urging that staff, at all levels, should be aware of, and have a working knowledge of, risk management. This book brings together, in a comprehensive package, the essential elements of bank risk management, current practices and contemporary topics such as Basel IV and cyber-attack risk. It offers international cases and examples that are useful to remember. The book concludes with an epilogue on the future of risk management and an 11-page glossary. It will benefit anyone who seeks an overview and basic understanding of risk management in banking. Knowledge gained from this book will also help to give the reader insights into overall bank management. SAMPLE REVIEWS: “This book is very timely as it deals with critical areas of risk with clear explanations and international examples. I strongly recommend it as the basis for training banking executives at all levels and for students interested in risk management.” HASSAN JAFRANI Chief Risk Officer, Asia Pacific IFC, World Bank Group “This is an enjoyable and refreshing read on banks’ risk management. The fundamentals of banking and the definitions and concepts associated with bank risk management are presented in a structured and easy-to-follow format." This is a book that I highly recommend to practitioners and students alike.” DR. MD. In the current economic scenario, the intangible assets contribute significantly to the construction of the competitive positioning of a company. It follows that this intangible information must be appropriately considered in the internal rating system (IRSs). Currently key aspects of business risk and operational risk such as potential for growth, competitive capabilities, core competencies, role in the supply chain of membership, and governance are being considered as secondary in this system. Intangible factors such as the milieu of the company and the environment in which it operates, are not being appropriately considered. In this book, Vincenzo Formisano proposes new guidelines aimed to set desirable IRSs in which the weight of intangible assets is appropriately and properly valued. He addresses practical rules for achieving a rating system capable of understanding and enhancing the intangible assets of a company and for the assessment of creditworthiness. The first part of the book focuses on existing practices; the second part exposes a general model for the classification and interpretation of intangibles. The third part provides practical guidelines designed to configure desirable rating models in which the weight of intangible assets is correctly considered. This book offers theoretical and practical insights and an easy-to-read approach which provides a valuable source of information for teachers and students in Finance. It is also a useful reference point for the Banking, Accounting and Finance managerial communities.
