The post-communist Central European and Baltic economies are now approaching the end of their transitions to well-functioning market systems. In some respects, the approaching EU accession and conclusion of the transition marks the end of a fascinating period in economic history. Beyond Transition focuses on the economic problems and issues facing Central Europe and the Baltics, the Balkans, and countries belonging to the Commonwealth for Independent States (CIS) in the post-transition context. This focus reflects the need to better understand two processes that are increasingly apparent in the post-communist economic space. First, many of the problems now facing policy makers in post-communist economies - choice of exchange rate regime, tax reform, labour market regulation, improving corporate governance - also face policy makers in developed and developing countries in other parts of the world. Second, the EU's eastern enlargement and the policy agendas facing the first wave accession candidates have major implications for the CIS and Balkan countries that have not been (and may never be) invited to join this process.

"Beyond Transition" aims to support vulnerable pupils who, despite supportive transition programmes, struggle to adjust to secondary school. They can find the size, structure, procedures and work overwhelming and threatening, and this can culminate in failure and disaffection. This resource provides an easy to use intervention programme which can be used throughout Key Stage 3. It includes: identification and monitoring of vulnerable pupils; a flexible programme with comprehensive facilitator notes and resources; evaluation of pupil progress; and, PowerPoint for staff development. The Survival Skills Programme can be used with individuals or small groups and provides a variety of activities including discussions, tasks, role-play and games that build and develop organisational and social skills. The programme covers the key areas of: friendship; organisational skills; dealing with feelings; problem-solving; and, moving forward. This practical resource offers staff a series of lessons that will help pupils to better understand their secondary environment and how to function more successfully in school. It also offers evidence of supporting and working with vulnerable and at risk groups of children. The publication includes a CD-ROM with all copiable resources and the staff training PowerPoint.

The world is on the brink of major changes. The vibrations are increasing on the planet and act as a catalyst that is empowering the light and suppressing the dark energies. During this process, great opportunities to be a part of a magnificent spiritual evolution are opening for those who choose the way of the loving light of God. There is enormous confusion for many who have been subjected to false perceptions and are controlled through fear, the great tool of the dark side of governments and yes, even some religions. This book is a result of the author’s 33 year search for greater truths, enhanced by communications from several spirit sources of the Deity, plus answers about other life in the Cosmos including mind expanding descriptions from highly evolved beings about life on other planetary systems. The author included several communications from friends and family when they described their transition experiences after crossing over to the World Beyond. These messages go beyond fundamental religious myths and describe various dimensions in the spiritual realm. This book is for you: ♦ if you’ve ever wondered what your purpose in life is. ♦ if you want to unleash greater powers of your mind. ♦ if you’ve wondered whether there is intelligent life out there. ♦ if you’ve wondered what the Afterlife is really like. ♦ if you have any fear of dying, death or crossing over. ♦ if you really want to evolve spiritually. Ron has given many lectures and presentations over several years to a variety of organizations. Expressing his creativity, Ron also paints in oil and is the cover artist. From a reader: “Once I started reading your book, it was so interesting I couldn’t put it down and read it straight through. I need eight more copies for family and friends.” Beverly R, Novi, Michigan

Take a new look at healing, health, life, even death, and daily challenges and transitions. Transition and Survival Technologies takes readers further on their inner as well as inter-dimensional journeys into the worlds of healing, transitioning, shifting realities, dying ?????? into the worlds the human consciousness has a right to access and can indeed access to heal and survive here and beyond. We can free our attention to focus upon something much more subtle, abstract, and more real than our so-called "worldly" experiences. Once we are fully liberated and our perceptions set free to see, a new kind of understanding or vision of reality can come to us. We can then see ourselves as something far more, far greater, than we believed ourselves to be.

Shortlisted for the 2013 BISA IPEG Book Prize, this book explores how Eastern Europe’s post-communist transition can only be understood as part of a broader interrogation of neoliberal hegemony in the global political economy, and provides a detailed historical account of the emergence of neoliberalism in Eastern Central Europe. Adopting an innovative Gramscian approach to post-communist transition, this book charts the rise to hegemony of neoliberal social forces. Using transition in Poland as a starting point, the author traces how particular social forces most intimately associated with transnational capital successful in the struggle over competing reform strategies. Transition is broken down into three stages; the "first wave" illustrates how the rise of particular social forces shaped by global change gave rise to a neoliberal strategy of capitalism from the 1970s. It goes on to show how the political economy of Europeanization, associated with EU enlargement instilled a "second wave" of neoliberalisation. Finally, exploring recent populist and left wing alternatives in the context of the current financial crisis, the book outlines how counter-hegemonic struggle might oppose a "third wave" neoliberalisation. The International Political Economy of Transition will be of interest to students and scholars of international political economy, post-communist studies and European politics

This study expands the scope of trans* studies by examining how trans* identity continues to impact life long after the intense changes of initial social and medical transition have subsided. While a growing body of interdisciplinary literature explores trans* identity development and early medical transition, less information is available from either the academic or popular press about the life-long consequences and challenges of a trans* identity. Drawing on thirty semi-structured interviews, I contribute a much-needed theoretically grounded empirical case study that builds upon earlier research by using a life course perspective and employing concepts from identity theory and an intersectional analysis. I find that significant challenges remain in areas including family, dating, work, healthcare, eldercare, and end-of-life decisions. Furthermore, the challenges trans* people face and the resources they have for managing those challenges are powerfully shaped by the embodied capital they possess and simultaneously held identities such as race, ethnicity, class, sex, and gender.

The transition state is the critical configuration of a reaction system situated at the highest point of the most favorable reaction path on the potential-energy surface, its characteristics governing the dynamic behavior of reacting systems decisively. This text presents an accurate survey of current theoretical investigations of chemical reactions, with a focus on the nature of the transition state. Its scope ranges from general basic theories associated with the transition states, to their computer-assisted applications, through to a number of reactions in a state-of-the-art fashion. It covers various types of gas-phase elementary reactions, as well as some specific types of chemical processes taking place in the liquid phase. Also investigated is the recently developing transition state spectroscopy. This text will not only serve as a contemporary reference book on the concept of the transition state, but will also assist the readers in gaining valuable key principles regarding the essence of chemical kinetics and dynamics.

This book addresses the global need to transition to a low-carbon society and economy by 2050. The authors interrogate the dominant frames used for understanding this challenge and the predominant policy approaches for achieving it. Highlighting the techno-optimism that informs our current understanding and policy options, Kirby and O’Mahony draw on the lessons of international development to situate the transition within a political economy framework. Assisted by thinking on future scenarios, they critically examine the range of pathways being implemented by both developed and developing countries, identifying the prevailing forms of climate capitalism led by technology. Based on evidence that this is inadequate to achieve a low-carbon and sustainable society, the authors identify an alternative approach. This advance emerges from community initiatives, discussions on postcapitalism and debates about wellbeing and degrowth. The re-positioning of society and environment at the core of development can be labelled “ecosocialism” – a concept which must be tempered against the conditions created by Trumpism and Brexit.

The transition from socialism to capitalism in former socialist economies is one ofthe main economic events of the twentieth century. Not only does it affect the lives ofapproximately 1.65 billion people, but it is contributing to a shift in emphasis in economics fromstandard price and monetary theory to contracting and its institutional environment. Economicresearch in transition shows not only that institutions matter but also how their evolution towardhigher efficiency depends on initial conditions and on sustained political support.Unlike earlypolicy literature on transition economics, which focused on the so-called Washington consensus, thisbook provides an overview of current research, analyzing issues raised by transition for whicheconomic theorists and policy makers had no ready answers. It shows how research on transitioncontributes to our understanding of capitalism as an economic system and of the dynamics oflarge-scale institutional change. The book is divided into three parts. The first part looks at howlarge-scale reforms are decided dynamically through the political process. The second part looks atthe general equilibrium and macroeconomic effects of liberalization in economies without preexistingmarkets. The third part looks at the economic behavior of firms in the transition from state toprivate ownership and compares the effects of privatization, restructuring, and financial reform.Although focused on transition economics, the discussions are relevant to topics in politicaleconomics, development, public economics, corporate finance, and micro- andmacroeconomics.
