He’s forged from fire, and his lies burn. I’m taking a break from college to help Grandpa run his nursery business. I’m all he’s got, and he desperately needs my help. But when he unexpectedly dies, leaving behind an ancient relic as my inheritance, I’m not ready to accept that all the stories he once told me are real. Creatures forged from fire don’t exist, and the irresistible man that just appeared out of nowhere at my doorstep is not here to grant me three wishes. No, he’s here to deceive, so he can break the century-old curse that keeps him prisoner. But Grandpa warned me all about his treacherous tricks, and his enthralling seduction won’t work on me. No matter how sexy he is. He is my slave, and he will do what I say. Except there’s something I didn’t count on. His enemies are as ancient and determined as he is, and they want to kill me and send him back to his agonizing prison. Now, I must work with him to stay alive, while I also try to avoid getting caught in the web of lies he’s weaving around me. Political Magic examines early modern British fictions of exploration and colonialism, arguing that narratives of intercultural contact reimagine ideas of sovereignty and popular power. These fictions reveal aspects of political thought in this period that official discourse typically shunted aside, particularly the political status of the commoner, whose “liberty” was often proclaimed even as it was undermined both in theory and in practice. Like the Hobbesian sovereign, the colonist appears to the colonized as a giver of rules who remains unruly. At the heart of many texts are moments of savage wonder, provoked by European displays of technological prowess. In particular, the trope of the first gunshot articulates an origin of consent and political legitimacy in colonial showmanship. Yet as manifestations of force held in abeyance, these technologies also signal the ultimate reliance of sovereigns on extreme violence as the lessthan-mystical foundation of their authority. By examining works by Cavendish, Defoe, Behn, Swift, and Haywood in conjunction with contemporary political writing and travelogues, Political Magic locates a subterranean discourse of sovereignty in the century after Hobbes, finding surprising affinities between the government of “savages” and of Britons.

Harness the power of the magical, mystical, glorious Moon with more than 100 spells, chants, and rituals, along with Esbat celebrations for the Full Moon. The Moon is one of our most prominent and ancient symbols. It has shaped how we understand and track time, its movement controls the tides, and its rise into the sky signals the coming of night. All of these roles have cemented our relationship with the Moon and its important place in our myths and culture. The distinct phases of the lunar cycle have associations with different states of being. These states mirror a kind of spiritual quest which, like our search for ourselves, never ends. When we observe the Moon, we see reflections of the grand pattern of life that is birth, death, and rebirth. With this invaluable handbook, follow the Moon as she traverses each sign of the zodiac and discover how each astrological phase affects magic—and how your personal Moon sign affects your magical work. The discussions include the influence of the seldom-discussed energies of the True-Blue Moon, the Black Moon, the Void of Course Moon, and the lunar eclipse. You will learn how to properly conduct spells using candles and gemstones at exactly the right lunar moment to enhance the flow of power. Each Moon phase is explored individually to cover the phase's main themes along with moon rituals, intention setting, and practical ways to celebrate and manifest health, wealth, and confidence. You'll also find herb and crystal lists as they relate to each moon phase and information on traditional lunar herbs, including lavender, jasmine, willow, moonwort, mug wort, pumpkin, and sandalwood. Open your arms to Mother Moon, and allow her to take you into hers, with Moon Magic.
