Excerpt from American Book-Prices Current, Vol. 18: A Record of Books, Manuscripts, and Autographs Sold at Auction in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, From September 1, 1911, to September 1, 1912, With the Prices Realized The chief reason which brought about the very remarkable success of the sale was the great fame of the library and the high quality of so many of the books included in it. Collectors generally realized that here was an opportunity to secure fine copies of the world's most famous books, and an additional hundred dollars or thousand dollars was a small matter. And rightly, too, for in these days the great rarities among famous books must be snatched at when they appear, otherwise in many cases the opportunity to secure them does not again occur. Price and value of such things is entirely a relative matter. The collector who has the money to gratify his wishes is certainly justified in paying five times the record price for any really rare book he may want, rather than wait a year or five years for the possible chance of saving a few hundred or a few thousand dol lars. While he would have been watching for the cheaper copy he can be getting pleasure from the possession Of the book. But all this is no defense or excuse for any person paying or for a book of which a dozen copies might be gathered together from the book shops of London or New York at prices of or equal in every other respect to the Hoe copy though not possessing the book-label of that library. Some fancy prices were paid for Robert Hoe's book plates during the progress Of the sale. Mr. Hoe in his will while he instructed his executors to sell his library at auction left it to their decision whether the books should be Offered in America or in Europe, and it was a serious question for some time whether the entire library, or at least a part of it, might not be sent to London or Paris for sale. The results have certainly justified the decision of the executors. Mr. Hoe had perhaps the finest collection in America of choice French books, and the universal feeling was that this portion of the library might be sacrificed. But even the French books sold well. The more important Paris dealers were represented and a good many books went back to France. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from American Book-Prices Current, Vol. 1: A Record of Books, Manuscripts and Autographs Sold at Auction in New York, Boston and Philadelphia, From September 1st, 1894, to September 1st, 1895, With the Prices Realized Should this volume meet with the necessary financial support from the trade and book-buyers generally, the compilation will be published annually, and it is hoped that this, our first effort, will be much improved upon in future issues. Although the number of sales and aggregate value of books sold at auction in the United States fall below those of England, nevertheless the past year has seen dispersed several collee tions which, in the character of the volumes offered and in the sums realized, will compare favorably with any recent London sales. Some absolutely unique books, and others practically so, have been put upon the auction record, while new records have been established upon some of the world's great classics for which the competition is keenest. The books most in favor with collectors in this country, much as in England, are early English literature, first editions of English and American authors, and the rarer Americana. For a few of the rarest and most esteemed volumes in each of these classes there seems to be no limit in price to which they may not attain. Prices which even five years ago would have been called exorbitant, are today considered moderate. The demand exceeds the supply, and at each sale some buyer is prepared to pay, for a fine copy, a little more than the book has ever brought at any previous sale. This can be said of the rarest books only, for commoner books, and especially inferior 00pies, have not sho'wn any marked increase in price. Excerpt from American Book-Prices Current: A Record of Books, Manuscripts, and Autographs Sold at Auction in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, From September 1, 1903, to September 1, 1904, With the Prices Realized Perhaps the most characteristic feature of the season was the unusual number of expensive subscription books (so-called) which have been thrown (and this seems to be the proper word to use) upon the auction market. The greatest collection of this sort ever sold was the magnificent library of Howard T. Goodwin, which was sold by Mr. Henkels in three sales, Part I, October 22, 23, and 24; Part II, November 12, 13, and 14; and Part III, December 10, 11, and 12, 1903. The three Goodwin catalogues were illustrated with a number of reproductions of bindings in colors, probably the finest ever appearing in any American auction catalogue. Excerpt from American Book-Prices Current: A Record of Books, Manuscripts and Autographs Sold at Auction in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, From September 1, 1913, to September 1, 1914, With the Prices Realized As in several of the previous volumes, the printer's copy for this volume has been prepared by Miss C. E. Dyett, and much of its excellence is due to her accurate and painstaking work. The present volume contains records of lots, selected from 138 catalogues describing some lots. As it may come into the hands of some persons not familiar with the work, the following explanation of the abbreviations used and of the scheme of the work is reprinted from the earlier volumes. The name of the author (or, in the case of anonymous books, the first word of the title) is set in black-faced capitals.
