This account of traditional education among the Chaga, a Bantu-speaking people of Tanzania, was one of the earliest studies of indigenous education. The first part of the book is an historical survey of existing literature on the subject in English, French and German; the second and main part of the book is a description of the informal education of the Chaga child in the family; the self-educative process in play group and age class; the formal training received during the rites leading up to circumcision, initiation and the preparation for marriage; and the changes in relationship between parents and children as they grow older, from the infant stage of biological dependence to the point at which the child fills the place occupied by the parent through descent, inheritance and succession. Psychological, anthropological, linguistic and pedagogical problems are discussed, including the development of speech during infancy, the extension of classificatory terms in the kinship group, the significance of the rites of development, and the differentiation of behaviour according to age, sex and rank of the children by means of taboos, punishments, songs and proverbs. The third part of the book offers practical conclusions from this study of indigenous education, in particular with regard to education policy, teaching methods and school organisation in Tropical Africa.

But the star of the book is chaga—"the king of the mushrooms"—which holds the greatest storehouse of medicinal properties of any mushroom species. In addition to exploring the extraordinary history, lore, scientific research, and future of this potent healing mushroom, Wolfe provides readers with recipes for teas, soups, fermentations, and tinctures—as well as tips on how to obtain quality chaga products. On the trail of the mystery of Saturn’s disappearing moons, network journalist Gaby McAslan finds herself in Africa researching the Kilimanjaro Event: a meteor-strike in Kenya which caused the stunning African landscape to give way to something equally beautiful – and indescribably alien. Dubbed the ‘Chaga’, the alien flora destroys all man-made materials, and moulds human flesh, bone and spirit to its own designs. But when Gaby finds the first man to survive the Chaga’s changes, she realizes it has its own plans for humankind... Against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, McDonald weaves a staggering tale of keen human observation and speculation, as the Kilimanjaro Event changes the course of the human race by exposure to something beyond its imagination. Note: Chaga was published in the UK under the title Evolution's Shore. REVIEWS "McDonald... consistently explores new territory with his breathtaking images and incisive language. Both form and substance blend fortuitously in a work that features strong characters, a suspenseful story, and a profound message of hope and transformation. A priority purchase for SF collections." – Library Journal "One of the finest writers of his generation, who chooses to write science fiction because that is how he can best illuminate the world." – New Statesman "...inventive and challenging... "Oxidative stress and inflammatory cell death / tissue damage have been implicated in a wide array of human diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, inflammatory joint diseases,; cardiovascular dysfunctions as well as ageing. Oxidative stress mediates the activation of transcription factors such as NF?B that, in turn, induce the transcription of certain genes promoting cytokine production. Release of these cytokines results in the enhancement of inflammatory responses and activation of endothelial cells in distant organs. The inflammatory cascade is then triggered by the induction of adhesion molecules and the generation of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. Given that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS respectively) generated by infiltrated neutrophils into distant organs act directly as noxious agents reacting with molecular components, thereby enhancing inflammatory processes and therefore influencing cell viability, ROS and RNS have become potential therapeutic targets for prophylactic biofactors. Whilst their production by phagocytic cells is, of course, essential for the eradication of invading pathogens, and the capacity of selected chemotherapeutic agents to generate such species in specific `target' cells is well known in cancer research, the novel therapeutic actions and potential mechanisms of action of ozone as a microbicidal agent in clinical dentistry are now being advocated. The focus of this publication prominently encompasses the pivotal roles of ROS and RNS in the pathogenesis of many clinical conditions (together with their involvement in the ageing process of lower (yeast) cells, and higher organisms including plants), and discusses the potential applications of dietary-derived antioxidants to interfere with the biomolecular mechanisms of these processes and hence offer realistic therapeutic or prophylactic potentials."

The Kiss of Death

Chaga's Disease in the Americas

Chagas' Disease Has Become one of the major public-health problems in Latin America. Current estimates are that sixteen to eighteen million people are infected. Caused by a flagellate protozoa carried to humans via the bite of the triatomine or vinchuca bug, it is locally referred to as the "kissing bug" because of its tendency to lodge on victims' faces during sleep. The protozoa, T. cruzi, enters neuron tissues in the heart and other organs and causes death by irreversible cardiac and gastrointestinal lesions in thirty to forty percent of all cases, usually lying "dormant" until the debilitating chronic phase during the human host's mid-life. Because of the long dormant phase, it has generally gone unrecognized, with chronic symptoms often attributed to other causes. Originally preying on forest animals, the vinchuca bug has infested the impoverished housing of displaced Andean migrants as forest lands and animals have been destroyed in South America. Although there is no cure for the chronic stage, the disease vectors can be controlled and possibly eliminated through improved hygiene and living conditions. No longer exclusive to Latin America, Chagas' disease is spreading to North America and Europe with the migration of infected bugs, hosts, transfusions, and transplant organs. The Kiss of Death is a thorough study of Chagas' disease with analysis of research involving epidemiology, entomology, parasitology, pathology, and immunology. It emphasizes how humans have created environmental and social conditions for its spread; how Andeans have adapted culturally to the disease with changing conceptions of the body, adaptations to rituals, and herbal medicines; what factors arenecessary to design a successful intervention project; and why understanding cultural belief systems is critical to prevention programs. The Kiss of Death also shows that traditional cultural forms can provide valuable strategies for dealing with disease prevention and treatment. This first book-length treatment in English reveals that an examination of Chagas' disease is a warning of what happens as a result of environmental destruction and is an example of what might be done to prevent such tragedies in other parts of the world.

Lose weight, boost your immunity, cleanse your blood and organs, and live longer and happier with this comprehensive five-part approach created by leading nutrition and raw food authority David Wolfe. In Longevity Now, Wolfe exposes the number-one cause of all degenerative illness and aging: calcification. Caused by an excess of calcium and the presence of nanobacteria, calcification can be found in some degree in virtually every adult and even some children. It leads to a plethora of illnesses and manifests as achy joints, hardened arteries, cellulite, cysts, kidney stones, gallstones, dental plaque, cataracts, and bone spurs, among many other health problems. By breaking down calcification and removing parasites, heavy metals, and other "unwanted guests" from your system, you can reverse the aging process and eliminate the prospect of degenerative disease from your future. Part 1 of the Longevity Now Program focuses on supplements to dissolve the buildup of calcium in your system, leading to freer movement, a clearer head, and a lighter step. Part 2 focuses on boosting your immunity, using a variety of supplements to make your body as resilient as possible. Part 3 focuses on rejuvenating each and every cell of your body with nutrient-packed supplements and superfoods. Part 4 focuses on using special electromagnetic grounding technologies to eliminate parasites and reconnect you with the rhythmic cycles of Earth's energy field. Part 5 focuses on deep-tissue bodywork and yoga, so that you can move blocked energy around and break up stagnation in typically unaccessed parts of the body. In addition to all this, Wolfe offers abundant additional information to help you more fully live the Longevity Now lifestyle, such as foods to avoid, healthful alternative sweeteners, delicious recipes, and more tips and tricks to keep you on the path of rejuvenation, radiant health, and full-throttle vitality.

The Telengits of Southern Siberia

Landscape, Religion and Knowledge in Motion

In a new and engaging study, Halemba explores the religion and world outlook of the Telengits of Altai. The book provides an account of the Altai, its peoples, clans and political structures, focusing particularly on on the Telengits, whilst also considering the different elements of religious belief exhibited among these native peoples. Paradoxically, as the demand for national recognition grows among such people, and with it the need for more formal state structures, built around the nation, religion too begins to become formalized, and loses its natural, all-pervasive character. With the Telengits, whose natural religion includes elements of Buddhism, this takes the form of a debate as to whether the state religion of their polity is to be Buddhism or, contrary to the character of shamanism, a formal, structured, fixed shamanism. This is a comprehensive anthropological account of the contemporary religious life of the Telengits, holding important implications for wider debates in sociology and politics.

Miracles of Chaga The Medicinal Healing Mushroom Prevention, Healing & Cure A good friend introduced me to the amazing health-giving powers of this one-of-kind fungus when my health had hit rock bottom. I was diagnosed with the same type of cancer my mother died of when she was only 56. I received my diagnosis when I was fifty-five and a half years-old - almost to the day. I froze for a moment at what I may be facing. What if I only had six months to live? I need to tell you right now, I did not abandon modern conventional treatment, but I tailored other "treatments" to suit my needs and my beliefs, and the Chaga mushroom was high on the list. I meditated and visualized. But frankly, until I discovered the chaga mushroom, it didn't seem like my health improved much. Of course, I was skeptical of all the natural health powers it allegedly possessed. Of course, I didn't run out to buy chaga immediately. And even when my research was completed, I still hesitated trying it. I'm not sure what the exact moment was that tipped me into putting it into my newfound health routine. All I know is, I did, and I haven't looked back or regretted a single minute of it. And now, after surpassing my mom's lifespan by seven years, I owe it to everyone facing any type of health problem today to spread the good news about chaga. Don't worry, this book is not about me or my life story, instead, I wanted to share my finding of this Amazing healing mushroom's benefits with you, so many may get benefitted from this book. But I'm a firm believer that if I have some legitimate treatment within my reach, then I need to indeed reach for it and give it an honest try. So, I added it into my diet along with my meditation and visualization routine. At first glance, you'll be skeptical. Most individuals are, even when they're told of the diverse health benefits from regulating glucose levels and lowering cholesterol, to helping control and maybe even prevent cancer. My story isn't unique. There are more people than you know using chaga mushroom as a tea or in meals and now, thanks to its current popularity, in any number of forms as supplements. In the seven years I've been using it, the mushroom's availability has skyrocketed. If you decide after reading this publication that you may like to give it a try, your search for the form of the supplement will be easy. What you will find inside this book I'll describe the fungus for you and why it doesn't look like your ordinary mushroom that may be sprinkled about your yard at the end of heavy rainfall. Not only that, but you'll want to read the unusual way most of the Western World heard about this amazing mushroom, as it's not the usual way good news spreads about a healing herb like this one. I'll show you how it works and how it can prevent and heal: Cancer Heart Disease Cholesterol Lowering Power Halting Microbe Growth Symptoms of Arthritis Respiratory Disorder (Bronchitis, Pneumonia etc.) Sinus Issues Mental Health and Alertness Various Skin Conditions (Anti-Aging of the Skin) Helps Boost Your Pineal Gland (For Emotional and Spiritual Health) As you go through your investigation wondering if chaga is right for you, I will show you how to find and harvest chaga, how to properly consume chaga and we'll also provide you with some recipes which help you improve your health and keep it running smoothly for years to come.

This book contains 11 chapters of significant and updated materials on what we know and what we lack and need in better understanding of Trypanosoma cruzi - a parasite that never dies - and the consequences of Chagas disease as one of the most important neglected parasitic diseases threatening the global health and wellbeing. This book is intended to increase the readers' enthusiasm to explore the four sections of the contents: Section 1 begins with biochemistry, pathophysiology, histo-immunological study, and findings to assist in the diagnosis; Section 2 further investigates the role of vector in propagation of the parasite, the intensity on epidemiology, and the severity on clinical aspects, which help us to be well perceived on the course of disease; Section 3 is seeking beyond modern medicine and what lays in the nature that helps fight against this parasite; and the last section, Section 4, deals with the impacts of public health problem and the control strategies on Chagas disease.
