Learn step-by-step how to develop knowledge-based products for international use! Knowledge Organization and Classification in International Information Retrieval examines current efforts to deal with the increasing globalization of information and knowledge. International authors walk you through the theoretical foundations and conceptual elements behind knowledge management, addressing areas such as the Internet, multinational resources, translations, and information languages. The tools, techniques, and case studies provided in this book will be invaluable to anyone interested in bridging the international information retrieval language gap. This book is divided into four sections that address major themes for internationalized information and knowledge: “General Bibliographic Systems” discusses how bibliographic classification systems can be adapted for specific subjects, the problems with addressing different language expressions, and the future of these systems “Information Organization in Knowledge Resources” explores knowledge organization and classification, focusing mainly on libraries and on the Internet “Linguistics, Terminology, and Natural Language Processing” analyzes the latest developments in language processing and the design of information retrieval tools and resources “Knowledge in the World and the World of Knowledge” addresses the ontological foundations of knowledge organization and classification and knowledge management in organizations from different cultures With this book, you’ll gain a better understanding about the international efforts to globalize: the Dewey Decimal Classification the Library of Congress Classification the Universal Decimal Classification multilingual thesauri Web directories of education-related resources human language technology metadata schemas the North American Industry Classification Figures, tables, charts, and diagrams elucidate the concepts in Knowledge Organization and Classification in International Information Retrieval. Find out what makes metadata an exciting addition to resource description Metadata: A Cataloger’s Primer provides catalog librarians and students with a comprehensive instructional resource on the ongoing convergence of cataloging and metadata. Equally valuable in the classroom and as a professional reference tool, this unique book serves as an introduction to the concepts of metadata within bibliographic contexts, demonstrating the potential for resource description. The book introduces various metadata schemes, including the Dublin Core, Encoded Archival Description (EAD), and Extensive Markup Language (XML), and discusses how to plan and implement a metadata-driven digital library. Metadata: A Cataloger’s Primer is more than a mere introduction to metadata applications and management. The book’s contributors present basic operational definitions, an outline of the evolution of metadata in the cataloging community, and a discussion of basic metadata techniques, calling on hard-earned knowledge gained from their experiences as educators working in cataloging and metadata applications. They provide work forms, work plans, and practical examples that demonstrate the application of metadata for resource description and depository development. Metadata: A Cataloger’s Primer examines: data structures MODAL (metadata objectives and principles, domains, and architectural layout) framework literary displacement knowledge domains discourse communities information ecologies personal metadata electronic resources authorship attributes cultural information resources instantiation data modeling DTD (document type definition) digital libraries and much more! Metadata: A Cataloger’s Primer is an invaluable learning resource filled with introductory and theoretical material, original research, and instructive material for cataloging librarians and students.

There seem to be two realms in our waking time: work and life. However, work is often juxtaposed against life, which is found in anything but work. Organizational work has become nothing more than the necessary evil, the means for a livelihood. Work has ubiquitously become the enemy of life. What culprit has dichotomized work and life? Public secrets! Empirically based, this book explores and testifies why the phenomenon of public secrets may have transformed our organizational life into a big lie to which we are all forced to subscribe-against private consciousness. Public secrets represent the communication phenomenon where public knowledge, though tacitly acknowledged and widely espoused, is never incorporated into organizational actions and daily routines. As a consequence, employees are not living their organizational life with their heads and hearts, but with our heels. "Employment with heels" is the biggest "un-economics" against time-it costs, wastes, and debilitates; it makes work the arch-enemy of life.
