This is the thrilling account of the last remaining Battle of Britain ace fighter pilot, Tom Ginger Neil. Neil was one of an elite band, nicknamed The Few by Winston Churchill, he flew Hurricanes during 141 combat missions in that battle and went on to command the first Spitfire XII squadron during 1942/43 as the RAF went on the offensive in north-west Europe. In this, the only full account of Neil's life to be published in collaboration with his family, we learn how he became a poster boy for the war effort and how he credits his sixth sense for keeping him alive during the Second World War.There was, however, one terrifyingly close brush with death, when in 1940 he had a mid-air collision with another Hurricane. With the rear section of his aircraft gone, the plane was out of control and hurtling to the ground, yet somehow he managed to bail out and miraculously survived with only a minor leg injury. As well as RAF service during the Siege of Malta, Wing Commander Neil, who is now in his late nineties, also served with the Americans during the D-Day landings.During his career, Neil was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses for the destruction of at least fourteen enemy aircraft, and was a successful test pilot after the war before commanding a jet fighter-reconnaissance squadron in Egypt's troubled Canal Zone during the 1950s for which he was awarded the Air Force Cross. With contributions from the man himself, this book also looks at his life after the RAF and his career as a successful author. For military buffs and novices alike, it is a must-read account of a true war hero.

There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state. The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird. 100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification. Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds. Our partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

Sharar begins with a history of the Avadh dynasty, and the relations of its rulers - who ranged between extremes of political wisdom and dissolute instability - with the Mughal Emperors in Delhi and with the British at a time of rising British power in India. He also describes the development of Lucknow people's culture and social institutions to a degree of richness that may be compared with the levels attained by the most admired of the great civilizations of history. There follows a virtual `anatomy' of the everyday life and artistic achievements of Lucknow during the period, covering an astonishing variety of topics: religion, education, medicine, ceremony and etiquette, dress, the culinary arts, calligraphy, dance popular speech and the practice of story-telling; such pastimes as kite- and pigeon-flying and the arts of combat and self-defence; the evolution of the Urdu language and its prose and poetry; architecture, music, pottery, theatre and other forms of entertainment. The culture of which Sharar writes was still alive in his day; it died out completely only in 1947, with the ultimate collapse of the feudal system. The editors provide extensive annotation that includes much background information for the benefit of both Western and Eastern readers, and takes account of scholarship on a number of subjects over the half-century that has elapsed since the original work was written. Among the attractive and varied illustrations are some particularly valuable early photographs of Lucknow buildings, a number of which were completely destroyed during the Mutiny.

"In A Fatal Friendship: The Nawabs, the British and the City of Lucknow, Rosie Llewellyn-Jones examines the fascinating interaction between two cultures - the British and the Nawabi. Besides touching on the political aspects of Nawabi rule in the province of Oudh, the author discusses the ethos and architecture of Lucknow in its heydey: between the period of the first Nawab in the early eighteenth century, and the last Nawab who was deposed by the British in 1856.".
