This research monograph provides a self-contained approach to the problem of determining the conditions under which a compact bordered Klein surface S and a finite group G exist, such that G acts as a group of automorphisms in S. The cases dealt with here take G cyclic, abelian, nilpotent or supersoluble and S hyperelliptic or with connected boundary. No advanced knowledge of group theory or hyperbolic geometry is required and three introductory chapters provide as much background as necessary on non-euclidean crystallographic groups. The graduate reader thus finds here an easy access to current research in this area as well as several new results obtained by means of the same unified approach.
This volume contains the proceedings of the conference on Riemann and Klein Surfaces, Symmetries and Moduli Spaces, in honor of Emilio Bujalance, held from June 24-28, 2013, at Linköping University. The conference and this volume are devoted to the mathematics that Emilio Bujalance has worked with in the following areas, all with a computational flavor: Riemann and Klein surfaces, automorphisms of real and complex surfaces, group actions on surfaces and topological properties of moduli spaces of complex curves and Abelian varieties.
A combinatorial map is a connected topological graph cellularly embedded in a surface. This monograph concentrates on the automorphism group of a map, which is related to the automorphism groups of a Klein surface and a Smarandache manifold, also applied to the enumeration of unrooted maps on orientable and non-orientable surfaces. A number of results for the automorphism groups of maps, Klein surfaces and Smarandache manifolds and the enumeration of unrooted maps underlying a graph on orientable and non-orientable surfaces are discovered. An elementary classification for the closed s-manifolds is found. Open problems related to the combinatorial maps with the differential geometry, Riemann geometry and Smarandache geometries are also presented in this monograph for the further applications of the combinatorial maps to the classical mathematics.
This first volume of the two-volume book contains selected papers from the international conference 'Groups St Andrews 2001 in Oxford' which was held at the University of Oxford in August 2001. Five main lecture courses were given at the conference, and articles based on their lectures form a substantial part of the Proceedings. This volume contains the contributions from Marston Conder (Auckland), Persi Diaconis (Stanford) and Marcus Du Sautoy (Cambridge). The series of Proceedings of Groups St Andrews conferences have provided snapshots of the state of research in group theory throughout the past twenty years. As with earlier volumes, these refereed volumes also contain accessible surveys of contemporary research fronts, as well as a diverse collection of short research articles. They form a valuable reference for researchers, especially graduate students, working in group theory.
This volume contains the proceedings of three AMS Special Sessions on Computational Algebraic and Analytic Geometry for Low-Dimensional Varieties held January 8, 2007, in New Orleans, LA; January 6, 2009, in Washington, DC; and January 6, 2011, in New Orleans, LA. Algebraic, analytic, and geometric methods are used to study algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces from a variety of points of view. The object of the study is the same. The methods are different. The fact that a multitude of methods, stemming from very different mathematical cultures, can be used to study the same objects makes this area both fascinating and challenging.
Groups St Andrews 2009 was held in the University of Bath in August 2009 and this first volume of a two-volume book contains selected papers from the international conference. Five main lecture courses were given at the conference, and articles based on their lectures form a substantial part of the proceedings. This volume contains the contributions by Gerhard Hiss (RWTH Aachen) and Volodymyr Nekrashevych (Texas A&M). Apart from the main speakers, refereed survey and research articles were contributed by other conference participants. Arranged in alphabetical order, these articles cover a wide spectrum of modern group theory. The regular proceedings of Groups St Andrews conferences have provided snapshots of the state of research in group theory throughout the past 30 years. Earlier volumes have had a major impact on the development of group theory and it is anticipated that this volume will be equally important.
The goal of this book is to investigate further the interdisciplinary interaction between Mathematical Analysis and Topology. It provides an attempt to study various approaches in the topological applications and influence to Function Theory, Calculus of Variations, Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory. The volume is dedicated to the memory of S Stoilow.
The present volume is the culmination often years' work separately and joint ly. The idea of writing this book began with a set of notes for a course given by one of the authors in 1970-1971 at the Hebrew University. The notes were refined serveral times and used as the basic content of courses given sub sequently by each of the authors at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Hebrew University. In this book we present the theory of Riemann surfaces and its many dif ferent facets. We begin from the most elementary aspects and try to bring the reader up to the frontier of present-day research. We treat both open and closed surfaces in this book, but our main emphasis is on the compact case. In fact, Chapters III, V, VI, and VII deal exclusively with compact surfaces. Chapters I and II are preparatory, and Chapter IV deals with uniformization. All works on Riemann surfaces go back to the fundamental results of Rie mann, Jacobi, Abel, Weierstrass, etc. Our book is no exception. In addition to our debt to these mathematicians of a previous era, the present work has been influenced by many contemporary mathematicians.
Selected papers presented at the international conference on group theory held at St. Andrews in 1989 are combined in two volumes. The themes of the conference were combinatorial and computational group theory.
This monograph covers symmetries of compact Riemann surfaces. It examines the number of conjugacy classes of symmetries, the numbers of ovals of symmetries and the symmetry types of Riemann surfaces.
A collection of seven survey articles especially commissioned by Professors Arnold and Monastyrsky highlighting areas where the Moscow scholl has amde significant recent contributions to theoretical mathematics. Contributions include papers on Knot theory, supersurfaces and dynamical systems. This book contains articles on aspects of mathematics that have become increasingly important in the west. The editors are internationally renowned for the standard of their work.
This volume gathers the contributions from outstanding mathematicians, such as Samuel Krushkal, Reiner Khnau, Chung Chun Yang, Vladimir Miklyukov and others.It will help researchers to solve problems on complex analysis and potential theory and discuss various applications in engineering. The contributions also update the reader on recent developments in the field. Moreover, a special part of the volume is completely devoted to the formulation of some important open problems and interesting conjectures.
The articles in this volume are for the most part research articles related mainly to the theory of quasiconformal and quasiregular mappings, Riemann surfaces and potential theory. They have resulted from talks delivered at the 13th Nevanlinna Colloquium, which was also a celebration of the 80th birthday of Lars V. Ahlfors: hence many articles in this volume reflect his mathematical interests.
