It is a great truism of golf that the game cannot be learned from a book. Yet it is equally true that there are some things every golfer must know before setting foot on the course or risk making an utter ass of himself. These are things your local golf pro can’t or won’t tell you. In this humble little volume is gathered together a collection of the wisest counsel and advice on the Noble Sport in all its forms. Included here are fantastic original photographs and illustrations from the 1880s through the 1920s, the rules and etiquette of golf as described by the wittiest classic sources, an old-school guide to the very best (and worst) of the world’s golf courses, and golf fashion at its vintage best. The ball will not land always on the fairway, the wind will sometimes blow against you, there are times when those natty plus-fours will end the day so besmirched and bespattered by sand and grime that you know in your heart of hearts they will never be the same again, but despair not! For this book will ensure you come off with top honors even when the odds are against you.

What is the true origin of the phrase 'one fell swoop'? Does the word 'honeymoon' really derive from an old Persian custom of giving the happy couple mead, a honey wine, for the first month after the wedding? The rapid growth of the internet and the use of email has increased the circulation of (usually) false tales about the evolution of language. In this entertaining and fascinating new book on the origins of words and expressions, Michael Quinion retells the mythic tales that have become popular currency - the word 'posh' deriving from 'port out, starboard home' - and also tries to find and explain the true stories behind the origins of phrases. Quinion offers explanations of why and how stories about words are created, and how misunderstanding word origins - while usually harmless - can have serious consequences.

Can it really be true that 'golf' stands for 'Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden'? Or that 'rule of thumb' comes from an archaic legal principle that a man may chastise his wife, but only with a rod no thicker than his thumb? These and hundreds of other stories are commonly told and retold whenever people meet. They grow up in part because expressions are often genuinely mysterious. Why, for example, are satisfying meals 'square' rather than any other shape? And how did anyone ever come up with the idea that if you're competent at something you can 'cut the mustard'? Michael Quinion here retells many of the more bizarre tales, and explains their real origins where they're known. This is a fascinating treasure-trove of fiction and fact for anyone interested in language.

Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled to be for 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'.. .and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language. That is what I am told but I'm not able to verify it. This collection of golfing jokes and cartoons has been compiled from those sent to me by friends from around the world and my sole function has been to edit them. Many of the jokes have been around for decades and tend to reappear in one or another revamped form on the internet and in magazines and newspapers from time to time. Wherever a joke is known to have been told by a particular person the joke is attributed to that person but in most instances this is not the case. All but three of the illustrations found in the Plain Family Fun are by Kitti Meeboonnum and Wirat Sukcharoen. Golfing Stories was compiled with a view to providing readers with a modicum of amusement during those sometimes not so quiet moments in the toilet, wc, loo, lav, lavatory, gents, ladies or thunderbox as it was sometimes called in the good old days and where it is just not possible to wield a putter. I trust that you will take it with you to one of the few places where it is not commonplace to be able to take your computer (even if it is a laptop), and wish you many hours of amusement in that most private of places. To those of you purchasing this collection I I wish you an hour or three of great amusement.

Cynthia O'Leary, an American of Irish-descent and daughter of a World War II veteran from Cedarville, Utah, sets off in the early 1960's on a Peace Corps mission to Africa. She is armed with only one weapon, her big heart. She wants to change the world for the better. She is assigned to teach in an enchanting little college town in West Africa called Utofia. This historical novel paints the world of an emerging young African nation and its European country clubs. It is a love story, a political drama, a struggle for women's rights, as well as a venture into the comparative social psychology of European and African peoples.
