The intertribal pow-wow is the most widespread venue for traditional Indian music and dance in North America. Heartbeat of the People is an insider's journey into the dances and music, the traditions and regalia, and the functions and significance of these vital cultural events. Tara Browner focuses on the Northern pow-wow of the northern Great Plains and Great Lakes to investigate the underlying tribal and regional frameworks that reinforce personal tribal affiliations. Interviews with dancers and her own participation in pow-wow events and community provide fascinating on-the-ground accounts and provide detail to a rare ethnomusicological analysis of Northern music and dance.

Following hot on the heels of the best-selling Don'ts for Husbands, Don'ts for Wives and Don'ts for Golfers this facsimile copy of the original edition contains everything you ever needed to know, from what to wear at a fancy dress party to how to hold your partner during a slow dance. Advice we should all follow: "Don't be a martyr to your feet" "Don't dance with bent knees. Bent knees suggest an ancient cab-horse on its last pathetic stagger or a performing chimpanzee gyrating around its keeper" "Don't disguise yourself as a "Lohengrin" if you happen to be short and stout. This sort of thing is excusable only in an operatic tenor" "Don't straddle" "Don't, Miss Shingled, Bingled or Bobbed, please don't comb your hair in public! It is a habit that is fast gaining ground but it is a deplorable habit. A few minutes reflection will, I am sure, convert you to the masculine point of view - it is a disgusting habit"

The account that emerges places kathak and the Kathaks firmly into the living context of North Indian performing arts.

DANCE FOR A HARVEST is a book that instructs those laborers wanting to go deeper into the things of God and to be used more mightily in these last days. Written by dance veteran Lucie Poirier, you ll read how she went from exotic dancer to dancing before God Himself. She provides candid and valuable insight into not just the dance, but how to become a weapon in the hands of the Living God, regardless of your calling and ministry. This book offers the reader: A description of what the dance communicates in the spirit realm; A reference guide for dancers that provides details on how to empower your dance; Biblically-sound teaching and advice on recognizing your authority, identity and place in Jesus Christ and how to use this knowledge to properly and effectively wield your weapon of warfare; The what, when, where, why and how-to that s needed for these end times, not just for dancers, but for anyone in ministry; Lucie helped me find the dancer inside of me and built my confidence in the dance. Melody Bolduc Worship Leader This is a must-read book. It's full of wisdom and "aha!" moments that intensifies your spiritual walk with the Lord. I was truly blessed by this book and would highly recommend putting it at the top of your list of reading material, regardless of your area of ministry or your calling. Sherrie Clark Writer & Editor

“A glimpse into the fragile psyche of a dancer.” —The Washington Post Jenifer Ringer, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, was thrust into the headlines after her weight was commented on by a New York Times critic, and her response ignited a public dialogue about dance and weight. Ballet aficionados and aspiring performers of all ages will want to join Ringer behind the scenes as she shares her journey from student to star and candidly discusses both her struggle with an eating disorder and the media storm that erupted after the Times review. An unusually upbeat account of life on the stage, Dancing Through It is also a coming-of-age story and an inspiring memoir of faith and of triumph over the body issues that torment all too many women and men.

Dressing the Dancer Identity and Belly Dance Students

Dressing the Dancer: Identity and Belly Dance Students Dress is a primary tool in the public presentation of the self (Stone, 1962). Clothing, grooming, and the physical appearance of the dressed body contribute to self image in both professional and recreational settings. Attending belly dance classes is a popular leisure activity among American women, and for many, dress accoutrements are a significant part of the class experience. Dressing of the self for recreational events gives individuals the opportunity to express alternate aspects of the self not typically evident in other social settings and provides an opportunity for female socialization. The appearance of vendors selling specialized dancewear for classes, seminars, and workshops suggests that dress plays a significant role for students at all levels of belly dance activity, not just among those who perform professionally. This study examines the types of dress worn for belly dance classes and the motivations for dress choices made by students learning to belly dance from professional instructors in dance classes, seminars, and workshops. The study will further investigate how dress contributes to the expression of identity in the belly dance class context. The methods used for this study are participant observation at locations and events where belly dance classes, workshops, and seminars are held as well as half-hour interviews with students attending those events.
