Even more than the animated features of Walt Disney and certainly more than The Simpsons, Sesame Street has had a deep and enduring role in shaping young minds about faith and morality--well beyond Patti Labelles stirring gospel version of the alphabet. Gary Dreibelbis thoughful analysis of the Sesame Street Gospel is long overdue. - Mark I. Pinsky, The Gospel According to Disney, The Gospel According to The Simpsons What a unique and insightful book! Who would have imagined that behind the scenes of a cute kids program there was a deep reservoir of theological truth and moral teaching that has shaped mnds and hearts of millions of children? A fascinating read. - Robert Lupton, Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those they Help and How to Reverse It. Not only is this a lesson in television history, it takes an iconic show and delves deeper into the moral and spiritual themes that lie just below the surface, giving us a new way to look at a special place called Sesame Street. - Tony Rossi, Director of Communication, The Christophers and National Catholic Radio Host During its forty-five seasons on air, Sesame Street has not only taught children letters of the alphabet and numbers, it has also taught children lessons in faith, equality, and social justice. Most of all it has taught children in subtle ways to follow The Golden Rule and that all people are created equal. It is without doubt one of the most significant television programs of all time.

Sesame Street, the most trusted name in preschool education, offers a complete, user-friendly guide to help parents prepare their children, ages 2-5, for academic, physical, and social success. For the past 50 years, Sesame Street has stood at the forefront of child development, stimulating and nurturing the minds of preschoolers not only through the iconic TV show, but also through books, games, mobile apps, and community engagement initiatives. With Ready for School!, Senior VP of Curriculum and Content at Sesame Workshop Dr. Rosemarie Truglio shares all the research-based, curriculum-directed school readiness skills that have made Sesame Street the preeminent children's TV program, and that every parent needs in order to get their preschooler ready for lifelong learning. Each of the book's eight chapters focuses on a key area: language, literacy, math, science, logic & reasoning, social & emotional development, healthy habits, and the arts. An essential dynamic of Ready for School! is its emphasis on the importance of play in a child's learning process. To respond to that need, dozens of "Play & Learn" activities are included to aid parents in educating their children: at the kitchen table, on the bus, in the park, or in the preschool classroom while playing together. In addition, the book recommends scores of hints, tips, ideas for useful products, and deep-dives on more complex topics for parents, all designed to make preparing young kids for school easy and joyful.

I Spy with My Bionic Eye

That was fun, a bit like a game my boys used to watch on Sesame Street when they were young children. I can't remember all of the song that was sung in this segment, but I'm sure some parents out there will know what I am talking about.

Dr. Dianne Ashworth's I Spy with My Bionic Eye is an enlightening and uplifting 'real life' story of a woman's journey, beginning with childhood when she was diagnosed as being myopic, or short-sighted; required to wear eyeglasses with 'coke bottle' lenses, she was alienated from other kids, which crushed her self-esteem. As she grew, she became more creative in dealing not only with her poor vision, but her vision of the world, as well. In her early adult years, she was dealt a blow with a new diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa, which meant she would soon lose her sight. Dr. Ashworth shares her amazing story as she forged ahead to make a life for her family as a single mother, and later became the first participant in a one-of-a-kind prototype bionic eye clinical trial in her homeland of Australia in May 2012. Although the results of this trial thus far have been incredible, there is much more work to be done. Let us all hope that funding becomes available to continue the outstanding work of all those involved.

I Love Lucy and "Mad Men" are both iconic television shows that mirror a specific decade in time. Both productions expose the role of women in society. One in 1950s America, one in 1960s America. How did the referenced culture and political climate influence the decisions creators made to explain their point of view? Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? Author Mark Mussari takes readers on a journey from the beginnings of television, when families sat in the living room and watched the one television set they might be lucky to own, to the present, where an increasing number watch television on iPhones or on DVRs rather than in real time. This record of the ever-changing world of American culture is highlighted with a fabulous variety of photographs from the last six decades.
