Professional automobile racing has always been dominated by sanctioning bodies whose main goal was to ensure competition. That has meant seeing that cars are well matched--in body shape or chassis/engine combinations or engine size. But what about an all-out competition, in which one team's idea of the fastest race car could be pitted against another’s, regardless of mechanical “parity”? This was what the International Motor Sports Association’s (IMSA) Grand Touring Prototypes (GTP) race series was about. The Series ran from 1981 to 1993, and it was one of the most exhilarating racing experiences of all time. This book is the first to profile the amazing machines that resulted from the GTP’s flat-out competition among different--and passionate--ideas about what might be the fastest way around a track: the V-12 with its better ground-effect tunnels but higher center of gravity (CG); the flat six with its low CG but severely-restricted ground-effect tunnels; and others that employed elaborate wings and air dams. Here are the people behind this engineering free-for-all, the culmination of almost a century of automobile racing experience. And here are eighteen of the most competitive vehicles they designed. Using photography, diagrams, drawings and first-person accounts from the men who built them, Inside IMSA's Legendary GTP Race Cars offers a detailed look at the technology that drove some of the world’s most exciting race cars, the likes of which may never be seen again.

Or the famous Bugatti Brescia Tyre 22 from 2915 that lay on the bottom of Lake Maggiore for over 70 years before its remains were recovered in 2009. Then there are classic beauties such as the Aston Martin DB4GT, as well as a collection of historical vehicles that call to mind the origin of the word "horsepower" and the automobile's humble beginning as a noble carriage. All the big names are included, but the focus is on what can be found behind the logos and the polished surfaces. With its striking photographs and compelling texts, Gentlemen, Start Your Engines! truly captures the feeling of these unique cars. As lovers of exclusive limited series, record-making vehicles, and legendary races themselves, Jared Zaugg and the team at Bonhams went all out in their efforts to collet the best of the best in this publication--and it shows. Louis Sugahara, whose fascination with Mercedes-Benz race cars began in childhood, combines his artistic talent and automotive expertise to take readers back to the golden age of Grand Prix racing when the Silver Arrows dominated the circuits. From the W25 to the W196, Sugahara traces the evolution of the Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix race cars that competed between 1934 and 1955, including the renowned 300 SLR racing sports car. Using historical records, the author documents the ongoing modifications that were made to the cars due to formula rules, circuit conditions, and the racing styles of such legendary drivers as Caracciola, Lang, von Brauchitsch, Fagioli, Fangio, Herrmann, Moss, and Kling. The book captures the excitement of Mercedes' greatest victories as well as the dedication of racing manager Alfred Neubauer and the genius of the engineering team behind the Three-Pointed Star. The lively narrative is illustrated with rare historical photographs and more than one hundred original drawings by the author. These meticulous renderings of the vehicles, accompanied by detailed commentary, show how body styling and even minor exterior features, such as the radiator grille, windscreen, and rear-view mirror, were influenced by the constant process of modification and experimentation. Supplemented by an appendix containing circuit layouts, race results, and model specifications, this unique "picture book for grown-ups" conveys the enormous technical and emotional appeal of the invincible Mercedes.

The story of Kar-Kraft began, as did many others in the automotive industry, with an axe to grind. In 1963, Ford was seriously interested in purchasing Ferrari. Ferrari was a legendary brand with considerable success in racing, and Ford saw the acquisition as a great way to be instantly successful in the racing arena. When Enzo Ferrari realized that Ford would not give him complete control of the racing program, he backed out of the deal late in the process. Ford had spent millions in vetting and audits, which then set in motion a vengeful response against Ferrari. The result was the unthinkable: Ford beat Ferrari at Le Mans. Ford wanted to become competitive quickly, but it did not have the race history or resources in house. To remedy the situation, Ford searched the U.K. for an independent company to help accelerate its race car development. It first settled on Lola Cars and set up Ford Advanced Vehicles. Later, Ford brought its LeMans effort to the U.S. and the Kar-Kraft relationship was established. Although Kar-Kraft was technically an independent company, it really only had one customer: Ford Special Vehicles. Kar-Kraft's story doesn't begin and end with the GT 40 that took the win away from Ferrari at Le Mans. Ford expanded upon the program and organized an all-out assault on racing in general. Cars were prepared for Trans-Am, NASCAR, NHRA, and Can-Am competition. Street versions of the Boss 429 were assembled under its roof. And fabled prototypes including the LID Mustang, Boss 302 Maverick, and Mach 2C were all assembled in Ford's contracted race shop. And then, out of the blue, its doors closed for good on a cold day in 1970. History tells us that Ford won Le Mans, the Daytona 500, and the Trans-Am championship. But it doesn't tell us how this was accomplished. Author Charlie Henry (a former Kar-Kraft employee) has enlisted the help of many of his former co-workers to bring you the very first book ever published on Ford's all-encompassing special projects facility, Kar-Kraft. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Arial}

1957: the last Mille Miglia. It was the tragedy of Cavriana, the crash of the Alfonso de Portago-Ed Nelson Ferrari 335S and the 11 bodies on the asphalt that wrote the last page in the story of this fascinating yet dangerous road race. But the 1957 marathon was the most enthralling of them all, enlivened by the contentious battle between the drivers brought together in a single team by Enzo Ferrari and that culminated in victory for Piero Taruffi, who retired from racing after winning the “most beautiful race in the world”. The story of this race is told mile after mile in this book, using the unfolding news of the Brescia-Rome-Brescia marathon, but also the testimonies of the protagonists, behind the scenes happenings, the cars, the men and women. And extraordinary pictures, many previously unpublished. This book is set against a backdrop of Italy in the late ‘50s and an unforgettable era of motor racing. This is the first in a series of books which will tell the stories of all the post war Mille Miglias over the next few years, ranging from the 1947 race to the tragic 1957.

For half a century, Porsche automobiles have been favorites of race fans and drivers in endurance events, rallies, hill climbs, Trans Am, Can-Am, and GT racing. This photohistory chronicles more than 100 racing Porsches that have been campaigned at circuits the world over, including Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, Spa, Nurburgring, and Leguna Seca, to name a few. In addition to color photography of the cars today and archival race images depicting the cars and top drivers from the annals of motorsport, the author presents the histories of such legendary Porsches as the 550 Spyder, a customer version of which gained notoriety as the car in which James Dean died; the open-wheel 718/2 with which Porsche unsuccessfully contested Formula 1 in 1959 and 1960; the 904 GTS that dominated European circuits in 1964 and 1965; the 917's which in 1972 and 1973 halted McLaren's Can-Am cakewalk; the 1976 Martini-liveried 935; the pair of Rothman-sponsored 959's that easily swept Paris-Dakar in 1986; and today's successful 911 GT cars.
