Research shows that stress in the crucial early years of a child's life can pose dramatic, lasting challenges to development, learning and behaviour. This is the practical book early childhood professionals need to recognize stress in young children, and intervene with proven relief strategies before pressures turn into big problems. Developed by celebrated early childhood expert Alice Sterling Honig, this guidebook helps readers address the most common causes of stress in a young child's life, including separation anxierty, bullying, jealousy, and family circumstances. Educators and childcare providers will: understand key factors that influence a child's stress level; choose from a wide range of stress-busting techniques; personalize stress-busters to meet the needs of individual children; skillfully use stress-reducing strategies with groups of children from diverse backgrounds; harness the power of storytelling to model solutions to problems and help children address negative feelings; and avoid burnout by handling the stresses in their own adult lives. Memorable stories inspired by Dr. Honig's 30+ years of experience show readers how these stress-busters can make a real difference in children's lives, and the questions at the end of each chapter are ideal aids for self-study or professional development courses. Packed with down-to-earth, easy-to-use ideas, this empowering book gives professionals the tools they need to conquer stress in any early childhood setting, so children can develop the early social and academic skills they'll need to succeed in school.

Levels of violence, abuse and neglect in early childhood are reported internationally as having reached epidemic proportions. The prevalence of all forms of violence to children has been difficult to establish, particularly in low and middle income countries. However, even in countries with a high GDP, the sexual abuse of children and young people by predatory adults may continue undetected for decades. In parts of Africa young children are mutilated and killed for religious reasons. Physical beatings that injure and break bones are still common in the Western world. Pornography and sexual abuse involving young children is propagated worldwide through the internet. The prevention of this violence will require substantial shifts in parental and public attitudes to children and the development and support of national systems of preventive legislation. The last 20 years has seen the emergence of a body of material which interrogates early childhood violence and neglect in a wider range of global settings, particularly those countries with a low GDP. This book aims to highlight important features of national and international initiatives which are rooted in findings from systematic research. The continued abuse and neglect of children has been attributed to social acceptance, not understanding the importance of reporting abuse, and the limitations of child welfare systems. This book will be of interest to practitioners in health care, education, and social work services, as well as field workers implementing programmes to address all forms of abuse at family, community and national level. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.

In Frankies Parsons Leben ist alles verlässlich. Konstant. Vorhersehbar. An ihren liebevollen, neugierigen, taktlosen Fragen. Und Frankie Parsons Welt gerät aus den Fugen. Eine bittersüße Familiengeschichte über Angst und Mut und darüber, was das Leben ausmacht.
