An Essay on the Lord s Supper

Jesus certainly did “ This is my body united with bread , ” and “ This is my blood united with wine . " Leaving these perversions , let us return to the plain and scriptural account of the Lord's supper .

The Lord s Supper

(3) In the third place, "do not make an idol" of the Lord's Supper. The man who tells you that it is the first, foremost, chief, and principal precept in Christianity, is telling you that which he will find it hard to prove.

"But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup." 1 Corinthians 11:28 The words which form the title of this paper refer to the subject of vast importance. That subject is the Lord's Supper. Perhaps no part of the Christian religion is so thoroughly misunderstood as the Lord's Supper. On no point have there been so many disputes, strifes, and controversies for almost 1800 years. On no point have mistakes done so much harm. The very ordinance which was meant for our peace and profit has become the cause of discord and the occasion of sin! These things ought not to be! I make no excuse for including the Lord's Supper among the leading points of "practical" Christianity. I firmly believe that ignorant views or false doctrine about this ordinance lie at the root of some of the present divisions of professing Christians. Some neglect it altogether; some completely misunderstand it; some exalt it to a position it was never meant to occupy, and turn it into an idol. If I can throw a little light on it, and clear up the doubts in some minds, I will feel very thankful. It is hopeless, I fear, to expect that the controversy about the Lord's Supper will ever be finally closed until the Lord comes. But it is not too much to hope that the fog and mystery and obscurity with which it is surrounded in some minds may be cleared away by plain Bible truth.

Thomas Lupich is the Preceptor of the International Society of Seekers of the Truth, a retired electrical designer from Princeton University's Plasma Physics Laboratory, and a taiji instructor with an interest in science and health. His major interest is Biblical Truth. He, therefore, considers himself a Truth Seeker: an avocation that he recommends to all men. Jesus commanded his disciples to become Seekers of the Truth and Thomas Lupich took Him at His Word. Solomon had this to say, "It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter." Thomas has written "The Lord's Supper Mingle With the Best" to expound on the meaning and the blessings of the Eucharist. The Lord's Supper has various important layers of meaning, but much more importantly, it tells us how we can be transmuted into beings much like Him. The hope of the author is to share with his readers the Eucharist's Light and its ability to transmute lives in the following way. Those that truly partake of the Lord's Supper will be "mingling with the Best," i.e., "The Father and The Son." The mingling will cause much of the Best to rub off on them. What rubs off will make them grow and glow, not only in this present age, but also in the eons to come!

Following his father's classic work CHURCH DOGMATICS, Markus Barth considered the doctrine of the Lord's Supper, which, had not received a full treatment. His work resulted in an exegesis of the Lord's Supper texts in the Synoptics, the Fourth Gospel, and the Pauline letters. His perspective sees the Lord's supper and its accomanying Agape meal as a symbolic event that allows God's people to commune in an atmosphere that remains open to all, including the Jews, whose Passover continues to shed light on this sacrament. His presentation covers the Lord's Supper, Passover, the relationship of Christians and Jews, and the participation of children in communion. He challenges the definitions of Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry as expressed in the Lima Document, offering one of the most sharply stated alternatives available. His discussion provides a reexamination of the Lord's Supper as a symbol of ecumenism--the opportunity for all God's people to celebrate together. This approach makes an important ecumenical contribution to understanding the Lord's Supper from a New Testament perspective.
