This unique reference book is a compendium of makers and manufacturers of every variety of musical instrument made in the United States today. It provides names and addresses of instrument makers indexed alphabetically. Each entry gives all known information on the total and annual number of instruments the maker has produced, the number of workers in the shop, the year the individual or firm began manufacturing instruments, whether the instruments are available on demand or made to order, and whether a brochure is available from the maker. Complete cross-references are provided for companies known by more than one name, for partnerships, and for parent and subsidiary firms. Instruments are also indexed, and makers are listed by state for the convenience of the reader. Lists of schools of instrument making and relevant organizations and publications are included as appendixes. The directory will serve two major purposes. First, it will be an invaluable source of information for historians and for the rapidly growing number of collectors of musical instruments, who will be able to use the data gathered here in appraising instruments and tracing their history. The second purpose is simply to increase communication among instrument makers and to make their names available to retail and wholesale outlets for their products.

Purpose The purpose of this book is to explain to information technology (IT) decision makers those aspects of finance that most affect their work. Most IT decision makers belong in one of two categories. Some know a lot about IT, but less about finance; the others know a lot about finance, but less about IT. In my experience, those in the first category often have to make financial decisions. Those in the second also, of course, have to make financial decisions, but about things whose characteristics stretch the normal financial and accounting rules up to, and sometimes beyond, their elastic limit. Among the characteristics of IT that provide interesting challenges for financial people are the following: • The accelerating rate of change • The short and unpredictable useful life of IT assets • The mixture of hardware, software and services • Upgradability • Networks that cross country boundaries • IT jargon Asked what characteristics of finance provide interesting challenges for IT people, many of them would answer - "Everything". However, items in the following selection are often particular causes of wonder: • Leasing • Why financial models always shrink benefits but never costs • Being told that a company with a mountain of profit is about to fail through lack of cash • Discovering that their budget has been charged with £113 485.

An essential new collection, The Documentary Makers brings together filmmakers from four corners of the globe to reveal the process and passion behind their work. Hailing from the USA, Denmark, Chile, the UK, India, Canada, China, and Cameroon, the 15 featured here have continued to both define and push the boundaries of the documentary tradition, and are undoubtedly among the most important filmmakers alive today. Their lessons and experience are presented in their own words, and are superbly illustrated with shots taken from their own films. In their universal preoccupation with "truth," each approach holds equal relevance for both the budding first-time filmmaker and the consummate professional.

Forces imposed by the twentieth century--modernization, globalization, the politics and economics of nation--have become so great that major changes in the old ways have had to take place for the sake of survival. The arid regions impose strict limits upon human existence and activity. And yet by respecting those limits, the flourishing and stable culture of these regions has for centuries been sustained. In the last thirty years, however, the forces imposed by the twentieth century--modernization, globalization, the politics and economics of nation--have become so great that major changes in the old ways have had to take place for the sake of survival. Egypt's northwest coast, where meager coastal rains have supported a sparse but thriving population of Bedouin, has recently seen the arrival of settlers from the Nile Valley, accustomed to a very different way of life and production, and hordes of tourists whose "empty, silent structures" have effectively turned the most productive strip of the coastal range into an artificial desert. This study documents the great accommodations that have taken place to ensure the arid rangelands of the northwest coast continue to be viable for the demands of human existence imposed on them. "A main thesis of this study," the authors write, "is that change in the northwest coast of Egypt has strong parallels in other arid regions of the wider Arab world; and specific comparisons are made to change underway elsewhere--especially regarding the transformation of Arab nomadic pastoralist production to a new form of ranching, and the related changes of sedentarization and the monetization of most aspects of livelihood."

The Laugh-Makers is an intensive sociological field study of the drive to become a successful stand-up comic in Canada. Robert Stebbins interviewed fifty-seven practising stand-up comedians and fifteen booking agents, show organizers, personal managers, and club managers and owners. He also observed the performances of approximately 140 amateurs and professionals from Vancouver to Halifax. Televised comedy - especially important in French Canada - and informal discussions with some twenty additional comics were also a valuable component of his research.
