I am often asked the question, "Should I get my PE license or not?" Unfortunately the answer is, Probably. First let's take a look at the licensing process and understand why it exists, then take a look at extreme situations for an attempt at a yes/no answer, and finally consider the exams. All 50 have a constitutionally defined responsibility to protect the public. From an engineering point of view, as well as many other professions, this responsibility is met by the process of licensure and in our case the Professional Engineer License. Though there are different experience requirements for different states, the meaning of the license is common. The licensee demonstrates academic competency in the Fundamentals of Engineering by examination (Principles and Practices at PE time). The licensee demonstrates qualifying work experience (at PE time). The licensee ascribes to the Code of Ethics of the NSPE, and to the laws of the state of registration. Having presented these qualities the licensee is certified as an Intern Engineer, and the state involved has fulfilled its constitutionally defined responsibility to protect the public.

A General Relativity Workbook

A General Relativity Workbook is a textbook intended to support a one-semester undergraduate course on general relativity.

General relativity, which lies at the heart of contemporary physics, has recently become the focus of a number of lively theoretical, experimental, and computational research programs. As a result, undergraduates have become increasingly excited to learn about the subject. A General Relativity Workbook is a textbook intended to support a one-semester upper division undergraduate course on general relativity. Through its unique workbook-based design, it enables students to develop a solid mastery of both the physics and the supporting tensor calculus by pushing (and guiding) them to work through the implications. Each chapter, which is designed to correspond to one class session, involves a short overview of the concepts without obscuring derivations or details, followed by a series of boxes that guide students through the process of working things out for themselves. This active-learning approach enables students to develop a more secure mastery of the material than more traditional approaches. More than 350 homework problems support further learning. This book more strongly emphasizes the physics than many of its competitors, and while it provides students a full grounding in the supporting mathematics (unlike certain other competitors), it introduces the mathematics gradually and in a completely physical context.

Calculus Based Physics I

Reviewer's Comments This is a basic text covering the essential topics in a coversational, engaging style. I would recommend this book to be used for the first semester of a first-year physics course.

This book is a physics book, not a mathematics book. One of your goals in taking a physics course is to become more proficient at solving physics problems, both conceptual problems involving little to no math, and problems involving some mathematics. In a typical physics problem you are given a description about something that is taking place in the universe and you are supposed to figure out and write something very specific about what happens as a result of what is taking place. More importantly, you are supposed to communicate clearly, completely, and effectively, how, based on the description and basic principles of physics, you arrived at your conclusion.Reviewer's CommentsThis is a basic text covering the essential topics in a coversational, engaging style. I would recommend this book to be used for the first semester of a first-year physics course. While this is best suited for students who are taking calculus concurrently, basic ideas in calculus are also covered for the students who have less mathematical background.
