This, the twelfth volume of proceedings of the annual Friends of Medieval Dublin Symposium, contains reports on recent archaeological excavations in and around Dublin city. Claire Walsh found for the first time evidence of a Hiberno-Norse community living outside the walled city in the Coombe, and Alan Hayden traces the later archaeology of the area in excavations along the route of the Coombe Bypass. The Liberties was also the location of Judith Carroll's excavations of medieval industrial activity at Thomas Street and Vicar Street, while Rosanne Meenan reports on her excavations in the vicinity of the medieval St. Peter's Church at Stephen Street Lower. Edmund O'Donovan discusses excavations at St. Nathi's Church in Dundrum, which revealed a series of fortified enclosures around the early monastic foundation, and Geraldine Stout attempts to reconstruct the precincts of the great Cistercian abbey of St. Mary. Historical studies include Grace O'Keeffe's examination of the connection between Dublin and Bristol in the Middle Ages, Colm Lennon's study of the medieval manor of Clontarf, and Aine Foley's investigation of the sheriffs who administered the medieval county of Dublin. Another highlight is Ellen O'Flaherty's report on the manuscript materials for the history of medieval Dublin preserved in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. (Series: Medieval Dublin)

This book contains essays written over the past 25 years about medieval urban communities and about the loyalties and beliefs of medieval lay people in general. Most writing about medieval religious, political, legal, and social ideas starts from treatises written by academics and assumes that ideas trickled down from the clergy to the laity. Susan Reynolds, whether writing about the struggles for liberty of small English towns, the national solidarities of the Anglo-Saxons, or the capacity of medieval peasants to formulate their own attitudes to religion, rejects this assumption. She suggests that the medieval laity had ideas of their own that deserve to be taken seriously.

During the second phase of construction of the new Civic Offices, Dublin, in the early 1990s, an archaeological excavation of the proposed car park area was undertaken by Dr Andrew Halpin, on behalf of Dublin Corporation. The excavation revealed evidence for remains of wooden revetments, dating to the latter part of the 12th century, and also the remains of a substantial masonry structure. Historical research indicates that the stone building may be the remains of the 13th-century Tholsel or Guildhall, indicating continuity of function on this site. Dublin Corporation was delighted to be able to fund this project from its inception to its completion in published form.

This is the first book devoted to churches in Ireland dating from the arrival of Christianity in the fifth century to the early stages of the Romanesque around 1100, including those built to house treasures of the golden age of Irish art, such as the Book of Kells and the Ardagh chalice. Carragin's comprehensive survey of the surviving examples forms the basis for a far-reaching analysis of why these buildings looked as they did, and what they meant in the context of early Irish society. Carragin also identifies a clear political and ideological context for the first Romanesque churches in Ireland and shows that, to a considerable extent, the Irish Romanesque represents the perpetuation of a long-established architectural tradition.

This 7th volume of proceedings of the annual Friends of Medieval Dublin symposium contains, in the archaeological arena, John O Neill's assessment of the significance for Viking-Age rural settlement in the Dublin region of his excavations at Cherrywood, and, among other landmark studies, a report by Abi Cryerhall on her excavations of the medieval 'Hangman's Lane' (subsequently the site of Hammond Lane iron foundry). Roger Stalley studies the 'country retreat' of Dublin's archbishops at Swords Castle in the later Middle Ages, while Linzi Simpson's innovatory use of John Rocque's map enables her to retrace precise property boundaries in the medieval city. The very timbers that survive in the roofs of Dublin's two Anglo-Norman cathedrals are subjected to detailed analysis, Maire Geaney surveying those in the nave and south transept of Christ Church, while Charles Lyons presents remarkable new evidence that the roof-timbers of St Patrick's cathedral survive virtually intact from its medieval heyday. Historical essays range from Viking-Age Dublin and David Dumville's exploration of its wider international relations, to Tudor Dublin, and Brendan Scott's study of the opposition of its monastic houses to Henry VIII's plans for their dissolution.
