This year's report shows that after an unprecedented period of success in global malaria control, progress has stalled. Data from 2015-2017 highlight that no significant progress in reducing global malaria cases was made in this period. There were an estimated 219 million cases and 435,000 related deaths in 2017. The World Malaria Report 2018 draws on data from 90 countries and areas with ongoing malaria transmission. The information is supplemented by data from national household surveys and databases held by other organizations.

If we must eat to survive, we must make agriculture sustainable. To make agriculture sustainable, we must consider the necessary strategic actions to understand the challenges in the sector, solve problems and innovate. That is why in July 2017, several Ministers and other senior representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture of Suriname, Guyana, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Belize, Barbados and The Bahamas participated in the Caribbean Agricultural Policy Forum organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The Forum analyzed the agricultural policy strategies of the different countries and their impact on the performance of the sector. It was an opportunity to discuss the challenges the Caribbean’s agricultural sector faces, including: the vulnerability of small producers to price volatility in the global market and of course the impacts of climate change. The dialogue was based on agricultural public policy data collected for each Caribbean country within the framework of the IDB’s Agrimonitor initiative. The following publication gathers the main findings and summarizes how agricultural policies affect producers and consumers as well as how the limited funding for agricultural services, such as research and infrastructure, could limit the ability of Caribbean farmers to compete effectively in global markets. The analyses presented are therefore meant to contribute to the Caribbean’s regional dialogue for the design of more effective agricultural policies, which we hope will strengthen the sector and improve the lives of people in the region.

This book directly engages vital social justice issues of diaspora, exclusion, and resilience through an ethnographic study with the Garifuna, a Central American afro-indigenous group with roots in western Africa and the Caribbean. Today, the Garifuna are concentrated on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Belize, and about 50,000 Garifuna live in the US. The primary focus is the resilience of Garifuna communities on the southeastern Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, through an in-depth study of Garifuna commitment to community and place, bolstered by interviews with recent Garifuna migrants to the U.S. who keep their culture alive in the Bronx and elsewhere through language, food, annual trips home, and spiritual connection with their ancestors.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 2, University of Vigo, language: English, abstract: This essay will examine how the political crisis impacts on the economic development by analysing some of the characteristic numbers of the Nicaraguan economy. First it will explain poverty and inequality which are one of the main problems in the country. Then, it will focus on economic growth and the importance of the tourism sector. After that it will take a short look at Nicaragua’s performance in the GCI. Earlier this year Nicaragua was named “The other Venezuela of Latin America” by the economic newspaper Portafolio due to its economic crisis which is the worse of the last thirty years caused by socio-political and humanitarian conflicts. Although Nicaragua is considered one the poorest country in Latin America it had one of the fastest-growing economies. Since April 2018, Nicaragua has been in a severe crisis. After the violent suppression of pro-tests against a social security reform, 325 people died, more than 2000 were injured and about 800 people were arrested. Furthermore, around 70.000 people left the country – most of them are fleeing south for Costa Rica. International human rights organizations accuse the state of systematic and serious human rights violations. The government rejects the accusations and accuses its opponents of a political campaign. According to its constitution, Nicaragua is a presidential democracy with a one-chamber parliament. Daniel Ortega has been president since 2007. After the Sandinista revolution against the dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979, he ruled the country authoritarian for eleven years with a social reform agenda. Government, administration, judiciary and the ruling party Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) are closely intertwined. The 2016 elections took place without international election observation. The international community is engaged in various ways to reform the electoral system and fully restore the rule of law and civil liberties.
