Portugal enjoyed one of the richest and most sophisticated cultures of the Middle Ages, in part because of its vibrant secular literature. One popular literary genre of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries was the cantigas de amigo, love songs in which male poets wrote from a female perspective. More than five hundred of these mysterious poems depicting a young girl's love for an absent lover survive today. Until now, however, they have remained inaccessible except to a small circle of scholars. In her translation of nearly one hundred representative examples of the cantigas de amigo, Barbara Hughes Fowler recovers the beauty of these poems for the modern reader. Her accurate and elegant renderings capture the charming spontaneity of the lyrics and show them to be a uniquely appealing form of medieval literature. (excerpt of one of the poems) Lovely mother, I saw my friend but did not speak with him and so I lost him, but now I'm dying of love for him. I did not speak because of my disdain; I'm dying, mother, for love of him.

Shiloh, The Life and Times of my Best Friend is the story of a mixed breed hound dog who was adopted into our family from the humane society. Her story is at times humorous, at times reflective and finally somewhat sad. The story will remind you of all those pets that are at times willful and stubborn, but provide their human friends with so much true companionship. Shiloh's spirited nature brought our family many years of entertainment and happiness. The book is an enjoyable read for the entire family. We hope you enjoy the fourth work from the pen of Dennis Lassi, Shiloh, The Life and Times of my Best Friend.

Who is Śrīla A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda? Yes, he is the world guru of modern-day Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism. He is the great emissary of Kṛṣṇa bhakti spreading the teachings of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Indeed, he is the very extension of Gaura līlā, having been empowered by Nitāicānda to drown even the distant shores with a tidal wave of love of God. Yet all of this and more with regard to his extraordinary preaching campaign is but the tip of the iceberg of who he is. Who, then, can fathom that depth, the inner wealth of this saffron-clad messenger? As daunting as it may seem, it is we who must take up this task in earnest and answer definitively who he is, for it is only by answering this question through the sincerity of our spiritual practice that we will ever really know who we are. Our guru is the very embodiment of a particular spiritual sentiment with a corresponding form, and realizing that form has much to do with realizing our own svarūpa.Fortunately, Śrīla Prabhupāda has not left us entirely in the dark. The light of his inner life shines forth here and there for the discerning student. He himself has pointed us in the direction, and the present book has collected his indications in one place for the first time, reasoned about them in consonance with revelation, and considered possible objections. The conclusion is obvious. Why? Because in this book we have allowed Śrīla Prabhupāda to speak for himself.
