Uncle Toby had said that there would be castles to explore, with ghosts and things. This helps to cheer up the glum twelve-year old Lovell twins, Tom and Mary, leaving their schools and loving parents to be evacuated to wild Northumbria during World War II. Then the adventure begins. They live with their Aunt Victoria and Uncle Leslie, meet the loveable ‘Mrs M’, a strange dog called ‘Scamp’ and, worst, the terrible private tutor, Miss Urquart, from whom they run away to find a mysterious castle seen through an old telescope. Now they are drawn into bizarre supernatural events of a time-warp between the war itself and ancient warfare. They encounter dark forces, as the story twists and turns, and are even rescued by the Royal Navy. Yet, this is only the beginning of more unexpected tragedies before the twins begin to escape from it all.

Four enchanting, new tales of castles, spells, and happily-ever-afters... "Spellbound" by Nora Roberts A bewitchingly beautiful lady casts a thousand-year love spell on the man of her dreams--and unleashes a nightmare that only true love can conquer. "Castle Doom" by Jill Gregory A Gypsy's prophecy spells love when an unlikely pair join to fight the unltimate evil--and find themselves in their own battle of hearts. "Falcon?s Lair" by Ruth Ryan Langan A young American travels to England to free her father's friend from a fatal curse...and discovers a helping hand from a charming, handsome spirit. "Dragonspell" by Marianne Willman With the help of a meddling sorceress, a brave young princess sets out to save her kingdom--and wins the heart of a dashing warrior along the way. From Library Journal Magic, castles, and romance come together with enchanting results in this charming collection of four novellas by some of Jove's more notable writers. Nora Roberts leads off with "Spellbound," a fast-paced story of spells and consequences; Jill Gregory provides a gothic touch and a dash of evil in her darker "Castle Doom"; Ruth Ryan Langan adds treachery and a wonderfully romantic spirit, in "Falcon's Lair"; and Marianne Willman's fairytale-like "Dragonspell" nicely completes the quartet. This well-focused collection is a good addition to the late winter romance market and readers who like their romance on the magical side will find it enjoyable reading. From wicked queens, beautiful princesses, elves, monsters, and goblins to giants, glass slippers, poisoned apples, magic keys, and mirrors, the characters and images of fairy tales have cast a spell over readers and audiences, both adults and children, for centuries. These fantastic stories have travelled across cultural borders, and been passed on from generation to generation, ever-changing, renewed with each re-telling. Few forms of literature have greater power to enchant us and rekindle our imagination than a fairy tale. But what is a fairy tale? Where do they come from and what do they mean? What do they try and communicate to us about morality, sexuality, and society? The range of fairy tales stretches across great distances and time; their history is entangled with folklore and myth, and their inspiration draws on ideas about nature and the supernatural, imagination and fantasy, psychoanalysis, and feminism. Marina Warner has loved fairy tales over a long writing life, and she explores here a multitude of tales through the ages, their different manifestations on the page, the stage, and the screen. From the phenomenal rise of Victorian and Edwardian literature to contemporary children's stories, Warner unfolds a glittering array of examples, from classics such as Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and The Sleeping Beauty, the Grimm Brothers' Hansel and Gretel, and Hans Andersen's The Little Mermaid, to modern-day realizations including Walt Disney's Snow White and gothic interpretations such as Pan's Labyrinth. In ten succinct chapters, Marina Warner digs into a rich hoard of fairy tales in their brilliant and fantastical variations, in order to define a genre and evaluate a literary form that keeps shifting through time and history. Her book makes a persuasive case for fairy tale as a crucial repository of human understanding and culture.

For over a thousand years—so legend has it—the brambles have grown wild over the ruins of Dunhelm Castle. Many believed that the thorns were a sign that the castle was cursed, so none dared to trespass, and the secrets that they protected and concealed have remained hidden—until now… Armed with a pair of gardening shears, Baird Beauforte is determined to clear away the brambles that hinder the development of his resort, and he won't let local superstition deter him. Dunhelm Castle is supposed to be the latest jewel in the Beauforte Resort chain, but the renovations can't be finished if the workmen are frightened of a so-called curse. To dispel any lingering fears, Baird decides to vanquish the briars himself. What he never expects is to find a mysterious slumbering beauty… Aurelia is like no one he has ever met before. Upon awakening, she demands to know his identity and why he is in her father's castle! Bemused by her claim of being a king's daughter, he is certain he has never met this "princess" before, although something about her rouses a haunting sense of familiarity. Soon, dreams plague this by-the-book businessman…dreams that feel more like memories. And Baird begins to wonder if he can claim his heart's princess—now and forever—with a kiss.

"Why am I dreaming this dream over and over, said Johnny. Haven't I always been a good boy."Johnny didn't like living in his father's castle because of the horrid past of torture chambers that claimed so many of the townspeople. The Wellington's who lived for hundreds of years in the castle before Johnny were a very greedy Royal family who liked to throw big Ballroom parties especially masquerade parties. Sir Jonathan Wellington the owner of the castle would make sure everyone at the party had plenty to drink and a good time such as dancing and loud music to cover up the screams down in his chamber of horrors, because he didn't want anyone at the party to suspect a thing. Sir Jonathan Wellington was very proud of his torture chamber and liked to brag about it to his guests at the party. Sir Jonathan would carefully pick out who he wanted to show his torture chamber to. Usually, loners were not much fun to be around. Sir Jonathan would put a mild sedative in their drink just before he would lead them down to the chamber never to return again. Sir Jonathan's chamber of horrors went on for many years until Sir Jonathan got a little sloppy with his choices of his victims. When the two victims that were led down to the chamber of horrors, pretended to drink their drinks, over powered Sir Jonathan and put him on one of his own torture devices,” The Rack" stretched Sir Jonathan's body till it was completely torn apart. Nobody knows how many victims there were, but there were enough to make Sir Jonathan a serial killer in those days even though this term wasn't used back in those days. Sir Jonathan's chamber of horrors could be the reason for all of the haunting surrounding the Castle Wellington. Johnny's father would tell him bedtime stories about the castle which would cause him to have nightmares, but for some reason Johnny would only have one dream and that would be being buried alive in the garden.
