Irony today extends beyond its classification as a figure of speech and is increasingly recognized as one of the major modes of human experience. This idea of irony as an integral force in social life is at the center of this provocative book. The result of a meeting where anthropologists were invited to explore the politics of irony and the moral responsibilities that accompany its recognition, this book is one of the first to lend an anthropological perspective to this contemporary phenomenon. The first group of essays explores the limits to irony's liberating qualities from the constrained use of irony in congressional hearings to its reactive presence amid widening disparities of wealth despite decades of world development. The second section presents irony's more positive dimensions through an array of examples such as the use of irony by Chinese writers and Irish humorists. Framed by the editors' theoretical introduction to the issues posed by irony and responses to the essays by two literary scholars, Irony in Action is a timely contribution in the contemporary reinvention of anthropology.

Submarine stories have a long and rich tradition of harrowing escapes and the sinking of enemy ships. When I first saw the boat I would be serving on for the next three and a half years, I wondered as to what purpose left-over submarines from World War 2 would have in the current war my country was in, the Vietnam War. After all, to my knowledge at the time, our enemy had no Navy to speak of and didn’t use shipping lanes. If you have ever wondered yourself or didn’t even know those old pig boats were still in use, this book will probably answer your questions. It is the story of one young submarine sailor’s viewpoints and experiences of everyday submarine life from February 1967 to July 1970. The overall banner that flew over the country then has letters that spelled out COLD WAR. That was the mind game with the USSR that was played with nuclear weapons. But under that banner was a much smaller banner that spelled out VIETNAM WAR. There was nothing COLD about that war. It was blazing hot and not just words of diplomacy. My experiences aboard that old diesel/electric submarine and off was high-seafaring adventure at times. There was sometimes fear. Times of sadness and others of just plain old fun. Whatever the case, it is true. So pack your sea bag and cross the gangplank and experience the adventures for yourself as I did as we sail into the blue waters of the Pacific and lay anchor in foreign ports and spend some time in the Tonkin Gulf, the war zone for Navy ships.

For courses in Social Organization, Kinship, and Cultural Ecology. Kinship has made a come-back in Anthropology. Not only is there a line of noted, general, introductory works and readers in the topic, but theoretical discussions have been stimulated both by technological changes in mechanisms of reproduction and by reconsiderations of how to define kinship in the most productive ways for cross-cultural comparisons. In addition, kinship studies have moved away from the minutiae of kin terminological systems and the “kinship algebra” often associated with these, to the broader analysis of processes, historical changes and fundamental cultural meanings in which kin relationships are implicated. In this changed, and changing context both Andrew Strathern and Pamela J. Stewart -- both of the University of Pittsburgh -- bring together a number of interests and concerns, in order to provide pointers for students, as well as scholars, in this field of study. Taking an explicitly processual approach, the authors examine definitions of terms such as kinship itself, approach the topic in a way that is invariably ethnographic, and deploy materials from field areas where they themselves have worked.

Before God brought the woman to Adam in the Garden of Eden, God gave him responsibility, which was a job. Men, you should have a place to take your new bride to live in a place that she can call her home. When you marry that special lady, you become her new daddy because her biological daddy steps down as her covering. It then becomes the husbands responsibility as her new daddy to take care of her and her needs. Instead of taking your wife to your parents home or her parents home, you should take her to your new home that you have prepared especially for her. This is why God says that a man must leave his mother and father and cleave to his own wife.

A Dramatic Personal Account of Life Inside the SBS

The SBS was first into battle a month before the SAS in the Falklands War and again in the Gulf War, yet hitherto it is the SAS that has had by far the higher profile. The SBS draws its manpower solely from the Marine Commando Units, and the Royal Marines are the oldest and most battle-honoured regiment in the world. FIRST INTO ACTION is the first Special Boat Services memoir written from the inside. It tells how Duncan Falconer trained with the Royal Marines in Deal before being recruited into the SBS at Poole in Dorset. The regimen of ruthless training is graphically described and the book also includes revelatory accounts of SBS operations in Ulster, Bosnia and the Gulf War, and of the intense rivalry between the SAS's individualist mentality and the more team-based, marine ethos of the SBS. Duncan Falconer's grippingly detailed memoir is sure to command the attention of anyone interested in the Special Forces and how they operate.

Gut Efficiency; the Key Ingredient in Pig and Poultry Production

Globally, the face of pig and poultry production is changing. The global emphasis on ethanol production has diverted significant proportions of grain away from animal production, thus increasing the cost of feed. This has forced the pig and poultry industries to scrutinise their production methods investigating alternative feed ingredients together with methods of improving productivity and efficiency in order to survive. This edited collection of papers is taken from a series of seminars that brought together some of the world's leading authorities in the field of pig and poultry nutrition and production. The fundamental theme is to address the interaction between nutrition and the gut ecosystem as a means to enhance health, performance and ultimately profitability. The importance of gut development and the intestinal ecosystem as a whole, and their impact on health and disease are covered in-depth. The roles of specific feed ingredients are also discussed. 'Gut efficiency: the key ingredient in pig and poultry production' is aimed at nutritionists and animal producers as well as students and researchers studying animal and applied biological sciences.

This project did a thorough review of the potential techniques which could monitor the structural performance of operationally critical mains (those 30" or 760mm in diameter and larger) of potable water distribution systems. The objective was to increase effective pipeline management as it relates to predictive failure. Parameters studied were global, local and environmental monitoring and the technologies studies were continuous, remote and in-pipe sensing. Gathering data from range of different sensors(aircraft, satellites, within and on pipes) proved the most optimal, with the understanding that further study of newer methods is recommended.

Where Music Helps: Community Music Therapy in Action and Reflection

This book explores how people may use music in ways that are helpful for them, especially in relation to a sense of wellbeing, belonging and participation. The central premise for the study is that help is not a decontextualized effect that music produces. The book contributes to the current discourse on music, culture and society and it is developed in dialogue with related areas of study, such as music sociology, ethnomusicology, community psychology and health promotion. Where Music Helps describes the emerging movement that has been labelled Community Music Therapy, and it presents ethnographically informed case studies of eight music projects (localized in England, Israel, Norway, and South Africa). The various chapters of the book portray "music's help" in action within a broad range of contexts; with individuals, groups and communities – all of whom have been challenged by illness or disability, social and cultural disadvantage or injustice. Music and musicing has helped these people find their voice (literally and metaphorically); to be welcomed and to welcome, to be accepted and to accept, to be together in different and better ways, to project alternative messages about themselves or their community and to connect with others beyond their immediate environment. The overriding theme that is explored is how music comes to afford things in concert with its environments, which may suggest a way of accounting for the role of music in music therapy without reducing music to a secondary role in relation to the "therapeutic," that is, being "just" a symbol of psychological states, a stimulus, or a text reflecting socio-cultural content.
