The world, as we know it, has drastically changed since mid-March 2020 when the coronavirus was declared a public health emergency and was spreading around the world. Like so many schools, businesses, and sports associations, millions of churches and houses of worship were temporarily closed to prevent the spread of the virus. What was the church to do? They were used to gathering in person, with faces and feet; however, with the present climate and to protect human life, the church moved to a virtual setting. The well-respected leadership of this church took the seriousness of the pandemic from the very beginning, and as of March 17, they were forced to close and shut the doors. “The church doors may be closed, but the church is still open,” stated the pastor as he started the Glad Tidings International Church of God in Christ Zoom prayer line. As online attendance grew by leaps and bounds, the saints began calling it a lifeline—because of the lives that were being sustained during the pandemic in prayer. Power, Passion, and Prayers during the Pandemic reveals what a local church did to survive the first year of this global crisis. The auspicious leaders, Bishop J.W. Macklin and Lady Vanessa Macklin, declared confidently that “we still believe God,” which became the theme of GTI as everyone endeavored to cope with the uncertainty and anxiety of the pandemic. Praying daily gave us the strength we needed to trust that God is with us at every moment and is beside us every step of the way. The author was inspired to write this book based on the faithfulness, commitment, and testimonies of those who were fighting to replace their pain with prayer and power. She witnessed God’s people take the church out into the community, feed the hungry, love the unchurched, offer health services, and make disciples as the church continued to advance the Kingdom of God. COVID-19 didn’t stop them, not at all. The members of Glad Tidings International and other believers around the world experienced some gain and some losses, but they kept on going. The pandemic empowered them, impassioned them, and encouraged both the young and old to forge ahead for Christ. “The church may have been shut down, but we will not shut up.”

Some of the things that grow on the earth are in their nature wild and barren and injurious to the growth of seeds and plants, yet those who till the ground consider them indications not of a bad soil but of a rich and fat one; so also there are passions of the soul that are not good, yet are as it were offshoots of a good disposition, and one likely to improve with good advice. Among these I class shyness, no bad sign in itself, though it affords occasion to vice. For the modest oftentimes plunge into the same excesses as the shameless, but then they are pained and grieved at them, and not pleased like the others. For the shameless person is quite apathetic at what is disgraceful, while the modest person is easily affected even at the very appearance of it. Shyness is in fact an excess of modesty. And thus it is called shamefacedness, because the face exhibits the changes of the mind. For as dejection is defined to be the grief that makes people look on the ground, so shamefacedness is that shyness that cannot look people in the face.
And this she does by reducing the power of passion to a good habit. For there are said to be three things existing in the soul, power, passion, and habit. Power is the principle or matter of passion, as power to be angry, ashamed, ...

‘The Blue Beast’—Edwardian slang for sexual passion—is the true account of the intimate lives of three extraordinary Edwardian women. Drawing on private family archives and highly revealing letters and diaries, the story examines how they became mistresses or confidantes of some of the most powerful men in Britain, men who profoundly affected the Empire’s efforts in the First World War. The wealthy and voluptuous American adventuress, Emilie Grigsby, claimed she was the ‘mascot of High Command’ – and not without good reason. She courted the press baron Lord Northcliffe, the philandering Quartermaster-General, Sir John Cowans and The Times military correspondent, Colonel Charles Repington, all of whom fell under her spell. It was manipulation on an ambitious scale, although eventually her schemes unravelled. Meanwhile, the sensuous and statuesque Winifred ‘Wendy’ Bennett launched into a passionate affair with the Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Sir John French. ‘The ‘Blue Beast’ uncovers how they conducted their relationship, whilst French wrestled with crisis after crisis to keep command of a vast army on the Western Front. Finally, the strong-willed and aristocratic Hon. Sylvia Henley replaced her sister Venetia Stanley as the close confidante of Prime Minister Asquith. It brought her great influence; but it was no compensation for the personal heartache that followed. Taking the reader on a journey into London’s High Society during the glittering Edwardian era and the tumult of the Great War, Jonathan Walker uncovers a story of power, passion and betrayal.
