How it happened that technological prowess and national glory (or “radiance,” which also means “radiation” in French) became synonymous in France as nowhere else. In the aftermath of World War II, as France sought a distinctive role for itself in the modern, postcolonial world, the nation and its leaders enthusiastically embraced large technological projects in general and nuclear power in particular. The Radiance of France asks how it happened that technological prowess and national glory (or “radiance,” which also means “radiation” in French) became synonymous in France as nowhere else. To answer this question, Gabrielle Hecht has forged an innovative combination of technology studies and cultural and political history in a book that, as Michel Callon writes in the new foreword to this edition, “not only sheds new light on the role of technology in the construction of national identities” but is also “a seminal contribution to the history of contemporary France.” Proposing the concept of technopolitical regime as a way to analyze the social, political, cultural, and technological dynamics among engineering elites, unionized workers, and rural communities, Hecht shows how the history of France's first generation of nuclear reactors is also a history of the multiple meanings of nationalism, from the postwar period (and France's desire for post-Vichy redemption) to 1969 and the adoption of a “Frenchified” American design. This paperback edition of Hecht's groundbreaking book includes both Callon's foreword and an afterword by the author in which she brings the story up to date, and reflects on such recent developments as the 2007 French presidential election, the promotion of nuclear power as the solution to climate change, and France's aggressive exporting of nuclear technology.

Severin Unck is the headstrong young daughter of a world famous film director. She has inherited her father's love of the big screen but not his exuberant gothic style of filmmaking. Instead, Severin makes documentaries, artful and passionate and even rather brave - for she is a realist in a fantastic alternate universe, in which Hollywood occupies the moon, Mars is rife with lawless saloons, and the solar system contains all manner of creatures, cults and colonies. For Severin's latest project she leads her crew to the watery planet of Venus to investigate the disappearance of a diving colony there. But something goes wrong during the course of their investigations; and her crew limp home without her. All that remains of Severin are fragments. Can these snippets of scenes and shots, voices and memories, pages and recordings be collected and pieced together to tell the story of her life - and shed light on the mystery of her vanishing? Clever, dreamy, strange and beautifully written - Radiance is a novel about how stories give form to worlds.

Super-radiance: Multiatomic Coherent Emission provides a comprehensive, self-contained account of the theory and experiments of the quantum optic phenomenon of superradiance. Contributed by highly regarded researchers in the field, the book first presents the theory of superradiance at a level suitable for graduate physicists approaching the subject for the first time. This introduction is followed by a more rigorous treatment that is supported by the analysis of experiments dealing with superradiance and by a discussion on the possible uses of the effect in other areas of optics and electronics. The theoretical and experimental results presented in this book will introduce a wide audience to this important area of quantum optics.

"…His radiance is like the sunlight; He has rays flashing from His hand…" (Habakkuk 3:4 NASB) Too many Christians assume that all will be fine when they "die and go to Heaven." But author and pastor Randy Dean, a modern-day firebrand for the Lord, aggressively refuses to settle for that way of thinking and living. From putting his arm around a hopeless person and giving hope to raising the dead, he is building an army to sweep across the land and shine its spiritual radiance on a dark and sleeping world. The transcendent nature of the Kingdom of God has a dynamic that naturally radiates God's presence and dominating power. Nature itself is agonizing in its wait for you to be radiant with this supreme energy in your very footsteps. -Randy Dean The authentically good news of the Kingdom of God is a transcendent supremacy - a living energy that by its sheer magnetism draws people into its healing force. Data concerning the spatial and temporal inhomogenities of atmospheric density and composition and their implication concerning the atmospheric infrared radiance are reviewed. Preliminary estimates of the variability in the radiance are presented. In addition, the range of scale sizes from small-scale variations is also considered.
Using the assumption that the radiance is directly proportional to molecular
density, the power spectrum (PSD) of the radiance spatial structure was derived
from these data. The correlation length is found to be approximately 10 km and

When the author began his Spiritual Journey through life he faced many things the average person does not. What he has written in this book is his testimony of that journey through his thoughts and reflections of those things he has experienced, studied and learned. This is not a pleasure cruise through airy-fairy land, because he takes his Metaphysics and Mysticism seriously. Though Christ oriented, this book is about more than simply the path of a typical Christian. Christ is a Reality now, a reality that has always been within every human heart, what George Fox, the founder of Quakerism called that of God within every person. In reading this book you will realize that Presence within yourself. You will laugh a little, cry a little and think a lot!
