The Occult Nineteenth Century

In the original edition of Regeneration: The Gate of Heaven (1897), Guthrie had dedicated a scant paragraph to women, inventing (from Butler's writing) what he called the leucorrhoea, the carrier of the germ: “The Regeneration with ...

The nineteenth century witnessed a proliferation of alternative religious currents and practices, appropriating earlier traditions, entangling geographically distinct spiritual discourses, and crafting a repository of mindscapes eminently suitable to be accommodated by later generations of thinkers and practitioners. Penned by specialists in the field, this volume examines important themes and figures pertaining to this occult amalgam and its resonance into the twentieth century and beyond. Global guises of the occult, ranging from the Americas and Europe to India, are variously addressed, with special attention to the crucial role of mesmerism and the origins of modern yoga.

Sex, Magick, Aleister Crowley, Orgasms, Erotic Dances, Angelic Beings, Revolutionary Activism, Liberation, Persecution, Defiance, and Suicide. Persecuted by Anthony Comstock and his Society for the Suppression of Vice, this turn-of-the-century heroine was also a spiritualist who learned many secrets of high magick through her claimed wedlock to an angelic being. Born in Philadelphia in 1857, Ida Craddock became involved in occultism around the age of thirty. She attended classes at the Theosophical Society and began studying a tremendous amount of materials on various occult subjects. She taught correspondence courses to women and newly married couples to educate them on the sacred nature of sex, maintaining that her explicit knowledge came from her nightly experiences with an angel named Soph. In 1902, she was arrested under New York’s anti-obscenity laws and committed suicide to avoid life in an asylum. Now for the first time, scholar Vere Chappell has compiled the most extensive collection of Craddock’s work including original essays, diary excerpts, and suicide letters--one to her mother and one to the public.

Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ... Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. I John v:4, 5. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 6 Who Is he that overcometh the world, but he that belIeveth that Jesus is the Son of God? CHAPTER VI. REGENERATION IN PATRISTICS. 1. Summary.--If Regeneration is a new doctrine, can it be true? And, if Regeneration is so important a factor in life, how does it happen that it is a new doctrine? Why has it never been heard of before? Why has no religion taught it? Regeneration is not a new doctrine. It is as old as religion itself; it is the basis of all religions, pagan as well as Christian. This statement should, however, not be misunderstood. It is not scientifically demonstrable, for the records of the past are but fragmentary. It is, however, a hypothesis for which much can be said, and which grows the more probable as the facts of the case are considered impartially. That the religion of Christianity is founded on the doctrine of Christianity, there is little reason to doubt, as he may see who reads the following pages. That other religions enforced this rule of life, or taught it, veiled in symbols during the early times of Christianity, there is good reason to believe, as will also appear. But that former religions did so, we cannot prove, because the documents in the case have long been destroyed and lost. Yet none can read the hymns of the Zoroastrians, constantly insisting on the purity of Ahura-Mazda, without coming to some such conclusion concerning Zoroastrianism, at least, if we may trust the...
