When Viviana Salguero came to the United States in 1946, she spoke very little English, had never learned to read or write, and had no job skills besides housework or field labor. She worked eighteen-hour days and lived outdoors as often as not. And yet she raised twelve children, shielding them from her abusive husband when she dared, and shared in both the tragedies and accomplishments of her family. Through it all, Viviana never lost her love for Mexico or her gratitude to the United States for what would eventually become a better life. Though her story is unique, Viviana Salguero could be the mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother of immigrants anywhere, struggling with barriers of gender, education, language, and poverty. In I Don't Cry, But I Remember, Joyce Lackie shares with us an intimate portrait of Viviana's life. Based on hours of recorded conversations, Lackie skillfully translates the interviews into an engaging, revealing narrative that details the migrant experience from a woman's point of view and fills a gap in our history by examining the role of women of color in the American Southwest. The book presents Vivana's life not only as a chronicle of endurance, but as a tale of everyday resistance. What she lacks in social confidence, political strength, and economic stability, she makes up for in dignity, faith, and wisdom. Like all good oral history, Salguero's accounts and Lackie's analyses contribute to our understanding of the past by exposing the inconsistencies and contradictions in our remembrances. This book will appeal to ethnographers, oral historians, students and scholars of Chicana studies and women's studies, as well as general readers interested in the lives of immigrant women.

Through the telling of his own madcap childhood, David Benjamin pays homage to the exuberance of young boys at play. Whether he's stalking frogs though the swamps of Tomah, Wisconsin, playing four-kid baseball with his bothersome little brother and two favourite cousins, or sneaking into the cinema to watch Saturday-afternoon Westerns, David Benjamin is the kind of kid who would have eagerly fallen in with Tom Sawyer. In relating his adventures - including one truly sorry incident with Snappy, the snapping turtle, and a run-in with a particularly fiendish squirrel - David Benjamin is by turns hysterically funny, movingly sincere, caustic, aggrieved and intrepid. Traversing the nooks and crannies of kidhood from playing fields to swimming holes, The Life and Times of the Last Kid Picked captures a time and a place in twentieth-century life and magically recalls the myriad scrapes and adventures and wanderlust that once made childhood such an exhilarating enterprise.

In Santiago, Chile, revolution simmers in the shadows. In the pursuit of international legitimacy, the government of General Antonio Galvez de Montoya is pulling out all the stops to build a state-of-the-art stadium to host the FIFA world championship. Unfortunately, it is the poorest residents of the country who will pay the true price of this glory, as crucial domestic programs are sacrificed. A well-organized leftist movement, enraged by the brutal conditions of the poor, threatens the status quo at a time when the eyes of the world are on Chile—and Galvez is not amused. Two men from different continents converge on Santiago to help make Galvez’s dreams come true. Sergio Alvarez and George King face dramatic pressure to finish the project on time and on budget, no matter what it takes. Working from George’s design, Sergio must navigate a perilous path shaped by corruption, political malfeasance, and crooked suppliers. He also pulls the strings to get Cecilia, his college-graduate daughter, a job on the project—never thinking that such an arrangement might turn his family inside out. As Cecilia gets to know George, what began as a working relationship quickly becomes an undeniable passion; now it seems that nothing can keep them apart. As the stadium project slowly moves toward completion, few are aware of the extraordinary events that are about to occur. Complications from all sides imperil the opening of the stadium— and George and Cecilia’s dreams.

'Perec is serious fun' The Guardian Both an affectionate portrait of mid-century Paris and a daring memoir, Georges Perec's I Remember is now available in English to UK readers for the first time, with an introduction by David Bellos. In 480 numbered statements, all beginning identically with ‘I remember’, Perec records a stream of individual memories of a childhood in post-war France, while posing wider questions about memory and nostalgia. As playful and puzzling as the best of his novels, I Remember is an ode to life: the ordinary, the extraordinary, and the sometimes trivial, as seen through the eyes of the irreplaceable Georges Perec.
