CARROLTON, GEORGIA, 1974, LIZ had been seeing demons for years the night she was summoned to her mother's death bed. "I think I can help" whispers the eighty-year old MARY ALICE, her silver hair flowing over chocolate skin and Indian cheekbones. MARY ALICE had divorced out of the family years earlier to be rid of dark spirits and an alcoholic husband, only rejoining LIZ and her siblings a decade later.

This volume comprises selected papers of SEM IV & V (Studientag Englisches Mittelalter), held at Potsdam in 2002 & 2003, and provides a representative cross-section of topics in the field of English medieval studies in Germany and Switzerland. The spectrum ranges from cultural studies centring around the history of ideas, questions of gender and the reception of the Middle Ages, to philological and linguistic approaches focussing on manuscript studies, semantics and (textual) communication.

In the author's book "Branches of One Riddle Family Tree," she traced 1,435 descendants of Julius and Nancy Minter Riddle. Shortly after publication, she realized misinformation had been given her and that Julius and Nancy Minter Riddle never existed. Instead, she found the original settlers of Orange Co., North Carolina were brothers, William and Thomas Riddle, who moved from Caroline Co., Virginia to Lunenburg Co., Virginia in the late 1750's and then to Orange Co., North Carolina in about 1764. They lived in that portion of Orange County which became Chatham County in 1770. Anthony Minter also moved from Caroline Co., Virginia to Chatham Co., North Carolina in 1771. Descendants moved west and can be found in Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Kansas and elsewhere.

Much turmoil surrounds the devastating phenomenon of autism. Theories about its causes and analyses of its symptoms vary so widely that the contradictions seem irreconcilable. In The Riddle of Autism, Dr. George Victor provides an integrating perspective that is needed by researchers, clinicians, teachers, and others who work with autistic children. Divided into three sections - "The Mystery", "The Unfolding of a Pattern", "Pieces of the Puzzle" - Dr. Victor examines the myths that cloud an understanding of this disorder, explores developmental contributions to it, as well as describes and probes the meanings of its specific behavioral symptoms.

Drawing on comprehensive analyses of all of Sophocles' plays, on structuralist anthropology, and on other extensive work on myth and tragedy, Charles Segal examines Sophocles both as a great dramatic poet and as a serious thinker. He shows how Sophoclean tragedy reflects the human condition in its constant and tragic struggle for order and civilized life against the ever-present threat of savagery and chaotic violence, both within society and within the individual. Tragedy and Civilization begins with a study of these themes and then proceeds to detailed discussions of each of the seven plays. For this edition Segal also provides a new preface discussing recent developments in the study of Sophocles.
