From our side is a collaborative effort of younger scholars in southern Africa and the Netherlands who are interested in the relationship between development and ethics, from a Christian point of view. The 17 chapters that make up the book have been produced through a unique set of partnerships, in which the authors have intentionally worked with practitioners who are working in the development arena. The essays were also shared in a number of settings with the authors, so that they have also benefited from this creative partnership process, and these partnerships have embraced people in both the South and the North, signaling a desire for a global dialogue led by Africa on matters which have a strong impact upon the continent. An introduction and epilogue, together with the guest foreword from Archbishop Ndungane draw the themes together and signal the contribution of the book to wider debates. Throughout the text, the reader is reminded of the contribution of the Christian faith to matters of development and ethics.

African traditional religion encompasses a variety of non-dogmatic, spiritual practices followed by millions around the world. Some scholars argue it is related to the Nubian religion of Egypt's Dynastic Period. In an expanded second edition, this book examines the nature of African traditional religion and describes common attributes of various cultural belief systems, with an emphasis on West Africa. Principal elements studied include sacrifice, salvation and culture, mores of revelation, divination, and African resilience in the face of invasion and colonization. The religious experiences of black people throughout the Americas are also covered. The author finds the cosmology, symbolism and rituals of the Yoruba culture to be the fundamental bases of African traditional religion, and draws similarities between the oral and written literature of West Africans and that of New World practitioners. The influence of Islam and Christianity is also discussed.

Poet Alice Walker has described culture as something in which one should thrive; further, that healing means putting the heart, courage, and energy back into one's self within one's own culture. Similarly, the "yes, yes ya'll," phrase, used by classic 1990's-era hip hop DJs and artists, evokes the passion in Black American culture. Written with that same celebratory spirit--and using the idea of culture and SOUL synonymously--this book explores of the ways in which integrating SOUL (culture) with contemplative practices can foster healing and restoration, expanding our understanding of leadership and community interaction and impact. With years of experience in higher education and as a mentor and teacher living in Senegal, the author stresses the importance of celebrating Black cultures, including the role of ancestry, community interdependence, elder-mentors and institutions such as HBCUs.
