* Reflections and humorous pieces, plus insights into some of mountaineering's more controversial events * Revealing portraits of other Himalayan climbers Peeling back the layers to reveal the gritty truth about the elite climbing world is Greg Child's specialty. With clever wit, sharp observations, and insightful reflections, Child's writing covers the full spectrum of the mountaineering experience. Entertaining even to those who have never been above sea level, Child's stories reveal climbing's other face. His description of the daily habits of mountaineers on expedition (who don't bathe for months) is both disgusting and horrifyingly funny. A post-climb fiasco in the offices of petty Pakistani bureaucrats proves that not all epics take place on high mountain faces. Falling of a rock climb in front of his mother is an exercise in humility. Child takes up climbing controversy with the same keen insight. His investigation of Tomo Cesen's claimed first ascent of Lhotse's south wall is considered the definitive report on this controversial event. A hard look at the media frenzy around the death of Alison Hargreaves on K2 evolves into a brilliant, impassioned defense of a friend. He also speaks out on the money- and media-driven expeditions that now crowd Everest. But Child never preaches. Whether contrasting his clumsy performance with Lynn Hill's elegant moves on a climb in the remote mountains of Kyrgyzstan or reflecting upon artifacts (from crucifixes to pink flamingos) that decorate the world's highest peaks, he writes it as he sees it, with a dose of wit. A true insider, Greg Child draws us deep into the world of climbing but never denies its dark side.

Michael Collier's much acclaimed fourth collection of poetry poises experience on the ledge between the everyday and the unknown. In THE LEDGE, the poems are narrative and colloquial, musical and crystalline, at once intimate and sharp-edged. The world is rendered beautifully mysterious as the poems slide into unexpected emotional territory. The artistry and directness of THE LEDGE confirm Collier's place among the most significant poets of his generation.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The authors bring extreme climbing to life. . . . Perhaps no author can rationalize why some choose to risk their lives . . . for the thrill of conquering a mountain. The Ledge comes perilously close and tells a ripping true story at the same time.”—The Denver Post In June 1992, best friends Jim Davidson and Mike Price stood atop Washington’s Mount Rainier, celebrating what they hoped would be the first of many milestones in their lives as passionate mountaineers. Then their triumph turned tragic when a cave-in plunged them deep inside a glacial crevasse—the pitch-black, ice-walled hell of every climber’s nightmares. An avid adventurer since youth, Davidson was a seasoned climber at the time of the Rainier ascent. But the harrowing free fall left him challenged by nature’s grandeur at its most unforgiving. Trapped on a narrow frozen shelf, deep below daylight, he desperately battled crumbling ice, snow that threatened to bury him alive, and crippling fear of the inescapable chasm below—all the while struggling to save his fatally injured friend. Finally, alone, with little equipment and rapidly dwindling hope, he confronted a fateful choice: the certainty of a slow, lonely death or the near impossibility of an agonizing climb for life. A story of heart-stopping adventure, heartfelt friendship, fleeting mortality, and implacable nature, The Ledge chronicles the elation and grief, dizzying heights and punishing depths, of a journey to hard-won wisdom. “Plunges readers into a dark, icy chasm from which escape seems impossible. Then it reveals the strength it takes to look up, and to start climbing.”—Jim Sheeler, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of the National Book Award finalist Final Salute “How [Davidson] rescued himself is the core of The Ledge, and its most gripping part. The physical effort and will involved are astonishing.”—The Plain Dealer “A moving portrait of friendship and loss.”—The Wall Street Journal From the Trade Paperback edition.

I started writing these poems as a way to work through fear, sadness and anger I was carrying with me from my childhood. As I wrote, I began to see how so many of my adult life decisions were made based on protecting that scared lonely little girl. So next I reviewed the men I had chosen to be part of my life, the who, why, when. What a pattern I saw there! Not so good a pattern. So more poems. When I had my two children, I now had the motivation to push further past the fear and stupidity of the earlier parts of my life and see my way through to being able to raise my children differently than I had been raised. Writing these poems brought many tears, some wonderful memories, and a lot of insight into how I direct my future and destiny.

ANGEL ON THE LEDGE The created beings called angels, as outlined in the King James Version of the Holy Bible, have amazing abilities. Not being bound to time or space, they are well qualified for the missions assigned them. During the populating of the new continent, many of the immigrants settled on the first land available, being the eastern coast facing the Atlantic Ocean, hence an immediate overcrowding occurred. This book of historical fiction follows the lives of a number of young girls who, for various reasons, find themselves without family. Angel 734 had been given the mission to transport certain young ‘throw-away’ girls from the coast, where they are not appreciated, to another place where… well, it’s all in this book. In addition to the angel, the use of the Santa Fe Rail Lines and various other facilities were involved. Angel 734 was inventive, surely, and intent on fulfilling the Boss’ agenda. It was all… well, it is too lengthy to explain here, but it’s all in the book.

Secrets from the World of Abuse

Most of us have met a survivor of abuse at some point in our lives. Whether they were a stranger, neighbor, co-worker, or even someone we love, we are everywhere. We hide our fading bruises from the world, and often times even defend our attackers' actions. It's not that we are weak and the question "why don't they just leave" can only be answered by the individual victim. The answers are usually very complicated and personal. My secret world of abuse was harsh, lonely and humiliating. I was afraid of the ramifications connected to "telling all." Would I be believed? Will it even matter to anyone if they knew? I would have been severely punished by the abuser I exposed. That was my greatest fear. Six months after the sudden death of my mother I broke the silence of my past. In the late hours of another sleepless night the dynamics of abuse in the 1950's and 1960's is recalled and chronicled. With pen in hand, coffee cup at my side, memories and tears poured on to paper. By dawn the door was opened. Few were allowed to enter my childhood home. We wanted no witnesses. I was a good liar, and could hide the truth from everyone. Not anymore. I believe the courage to tell these stories came from a love that resonates even after death. With that love and a desire to offer a glimpse into the life of a survivor, I am opening the door to my childhood and inviting you to come into my secret world and be my witness.

On December 21, 2012, there will be an opportunity for the meek to prevail. So speaks one of the Mexican sages in Jock Whitehouse's 2012 anti-apocalypse book The Ledge of Quetzal. "There was a growing momentum of darkness in the world. As climate change spawned wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes and floods; as earthquakes and mudslides turned entire villages into rubble; as political, social and religious differences gave rise to terrorism, genocide, and war; as the world teetered on the edge of economic chaos, it was not hard to imagine apocalypse in the making. The Maya, however, along with numerous other cultures and disciplines, had somehow discerned the largest cosmic cycles of man's destiny and the forces that surrounded it. And in those cycles they found, like the pause of a pendulum at its apogee, an opportunity for total change. It was like a second chance for all mankind." Yes, the weather is changing, world economies are shaky, terrorism and nationalism and fanatical leaders threaten global security. Some say civilization is ending. Can it be saved? Yes. Who can do that? We can. That’s the message that comes through in this wild adventure story - in the tradition of Castaneda and Coelho, deep into the heart of southern Mexico and its rich traditions of plant-based hallucinogens and the spiritual clarity they awaken.
