Through the lean days of hunger and emigration, through the champagne-mojito-flavoured years of the Celtic Tiger and on after it slunk away with its tail between its legs, Ireland's love for ‘our games’ has endured. Fact-packed but light-hearted in style, this reliable reference book and a quirky guide reveals little-known facts, classic matches and amusing anecdotes, alongside a general history of the game. This book traces the lives of the Stopford Earls of Courtown and their families from the time of the first Stopford to come to Wexford c. 1700 down to modern times. The Stopfords were clever intuitive people and through many calculated marriages their wealth accumulated and opportunities were created for advancement. The marriage of the 2nd Earl to Mary Powys opened doors that were hitherto undreamt of as Mary's mother was Lady Mary Brudenell whose family was closely connected to King George III. We know very little about the day to day lives of the Stopfords with the exception of the 5th and 6th Earls and their families thanks to the diaries of the 6th Earl and his sister Charlotte. Those diaries give us a rare glimpse into the social and personal lives of the families - their sports (hunting for birds, otters, foxes, golf), their maladies, their religion, their social outings, their friends, their prudence in financial affairs and their holidays in London.

Taking its starting point from John Donne’s prose—“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main”—John Deane takes a period of time and trawls through it for meaning and purpose. Beginning with a simple island, each subsequent piece features great figures, such as King David, and examines the futility of war and the place of poetry in fighting for a more just society. The collection’s centerpiece, “A Little Book of Hours,” journeys through Europe in search of spiritual truth. This collection is a meditation on how the Christian myth is seen to penetrate all of humanity and nature.
