. . . human kind cannot bear very much reality. T. S. ELIOT, Four Quartets When I was a little child, I lived in an old and somewhat rickety house by the sea. When the winter wind blew, the house would shake and tremble, and cold drafts would whistle through cracks in the walls. You might have thought that lying in bed in a dark room on such cold, windy nights would have frightened me. But it had just the opposite effect: having known this en vironment since birth, I actually found the shaking of the house, the whistling of the wind, and the crashing of the sea to be comforting, and I was lulled to sleep by these familiar sounds. They signaled to me that all was right with the world and that the forces of nature were operating in the normal way. But I did have a problem. On the dimly lit landing of the staircase leading up to my bedroom, there was a large and dark picture of a male lion, sitting as such lions do with his massive paws in front of him and his head erect, turned slightly to the right, and staring straight out at you with yellow blazing eyes. I had great difficulty getting past that lion. Someone would have to hold my hand and take me up to bed, past the dreaded picture.

Lion images are everywhere. In literature, in religion, in statues, emblems and heraldry. Symbols of them are found in all larger European cities -- particularly London. Many are also in Vancouver, British Columbia. A lion image is visually stimulating and should become part of our life.

Tears for a Lion

I have no television, only a sparse selection of books. This is the worst kind of torture, as day by day, I must confront the terror and regret, that would otherwise be repressed by physical recreational activity.

My Name is George, as I write this, I am setting in the special housing unit,(SHU) of the most secure prison complex in the world. The Federal Correctional Complex, in Florence Colorado. This is the place that houses the world's most Diabolical people, terrorists, Mafia Boss's, Serial Killers and Bombers. When I look out the window of my cell, I see the eastern horizon of endless fields replaces by pinon and juniper scrub land. To the northwest a snow-capped volcanic peak looms into the dark clouds. Near Cheyenne mountain and Colorado springs is N.O.R.A.D. which is the country's nuclear war command post. Pikes peak rises to 14000 feet making it the tallest point in the northwest. To my west the San Juan mountains rise from the front range. No where to run to and certainly no where to hide. I am locked in a 10X14 cell, 24 hours a day. I have no television, only a sparse selection of books. This is the worst kind of torture, as day by day, I must confront the terror and regret, that would otherwise be repressed by physical recreational activity. In this situation, one of two things occurs. You go mad, driven insane, by the regret of your prior mistakes or you embrace the desolation, and learn to work through it.At my age, I often ponder life, past and present. Being locked down in the SHU, alone gives me so much time to think about all my past mistakes and regrets. I think about how the eleven years locked in a United States Maximum security prison has affected me, emotionally

For an unknown reason, the Steller sea lion population in Alaska has declined by 80% over the past three decades. In 2001, the National Research Council began a study to assess the many hypotheses proposed to explain the sea lion decline including insufficient food due to fishing or the late 1970s climate/regime shift, a disease epidemic, pollution, illegal shooting, subsistence harvest, and predation by killer whales or sharks. The report's analysis indicates that the population decline cannot be explained only by a decreased availability of food; hence other factors, such as predation and illegal shooting, deserve further study. The report recommends a management strategy that could help determine the impact of fisheries on sea lion survival -- establishing open and closed fishing areas around sea lion rookeries. This strategy would allow researchers to study sea lions in relatively controlled, contrasting environments. Experimental area closures will help fill some short-term data gaps, but long-term monitoring will be required to understand why sea lions are at a fraction of their former abundance.

Anagarika Dharmapala (1864–1933) was a leading Sinhalese Buddhist reformer and national activist who ranks high among the makers of modern Buddhism. The Lion’s Roar is one of the first detailed accounts of Anagarika Dharmapala’s life and the pioneering role he played in the Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism at a time when resistance to colonial rule was mainly confined to the elite. The book explores his lifelong struggle for re-establishing Buddhist management of their own sacred places under Hindu control, particularly the Mahabodhi site in Bihar, India. Dharmapala’s association with the Bengali intelligensia, the ‘bhadralok’, and close interactions with Gandhi and Nehru in India, where he spent a greater part of his life, form an interesting part of the narration. Using a rich variety of primary sources, most importantly, Dharmapala’s diaries, the book situates his life within the socio-political and cultural ethos of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and chronicles the zealous efforts of a Buddhist crusader and monk who wished to reform the religion in his native land and propagate it in the Western world.

The Lion and the Sun a Novel

'The Lion and the Sun' is one of the books you continue to contemplate well after you've turned the last compelling page. The story will appeal to readers who enjoy espionage novels by Alan Furst, Charles McCarry, and John le Carre ́.

'The Lion and the Sun' is a story of intrigue, betrayal, and regret set against the threat of nuclear terrorism. The story spans the years 1978 to 2008, although the main action takes place in 1994 during the rise of the Russian Federation from the ashes of the Former Soviet Union, and immediately after the CIA agent Aldrich Ames was found to be a Russian mole. The story centers around Daniel Conte, a CIA field agent tracking the whereabouts of a missing Russian plutonium pit; a softball-sized hunk of plutonium that serves as the core of a nuclear weapon. Conte's quest takes him first to Vienna, then Istanbul, and then Tehran, where a personal tragedy in 1979 still haunts him. Along the way he will come face-to-face with a shadowy group of terrorists that may be linked to Iranian intelligence. Conte's mission will uncover repressed memories of past betrayals and lead to new ones that will challenge the very core of his beliefs in his mission, his country, and in himself. The author's experience in intelligence and counter terrorism shows in this all-too realistic tale of nuclear smuggling, terrorism, and espionage. The plot is topical and engrossing, the characters well-developed, and the descriptions of Vienna, Istanbul, and Tehran could only have been written by someone who was there. 'The Lion and the Sun' is one of the books you continue to contemplate well after you've turned the last compelling page. The story will appeal to readers who enjoy espionage novels by Alan Furst, Charles McCarry, and John le Carre."
