In this novel, Enrique Vila-Matas traces a journey connecting the worlds of Joyce and Beckett, and all they symbolize. One night, a renowned and now retired literary publisher has a vivid dream that takes place in Dublin, a city he’s never visited. The central scene of the dream is a funeral in the era of Ulysses. The publisher would give anything to know if an unidentified character in his dream is the great author he always wanted to meet, or the ghostly angel who abandoned him during childhood. As the days go by, he will come to understand that his vision of the end of an era was prophetic. Enrique Vila-Matas traces a journey that connects the worlds of Joyce and Beckett, revealing the difficulties faced by literary authors, publishers, and good readers in a society where literature is losing influence. A robust work, Dublinesque is a masterwork of irony, humor, and erudition by one of Spain’s most celebrated living authors.

Making the connection between writing and visual art can activate what William Burroughs called "The Third Mind"--from the confluence of the two art forms, something new, or other, emerges. This new anthology of essays about the challenges and rewards of uniting art and writing not only demonstrates how visual art can spark wonderful student writing, but goes much further, offering novel insights into the creative process. The result, editors Foster and Prevallet demonstrate, produces a new spirit of collaboration, one which in turn opens up dramatic possibilities for teachers, students, and the classroom dynamic. The 20 essays in Third Mind--by teachers, poets, writers, artists, and museum educators from across the country--offer ideas on a diverse array of artistic disciplines, among them, quilt-making, Chinese calligraphy, abstract painting, and photographic portraiture. Third Mind also features 20 pages of gorgeous color plates, as well as an inspiring bibliography of works on visual art and creative writing.

"...What I contrast with this is the perpetuity of energy, which is not quaint. The Indian peoples in the United States have been working on this whole idea of universe where nothing is apportioned or excluded. I mention this because the mind/body is a whole system. If one part of the system doesn't work, you become sick. The seeming tonic to this deadly malaise is psychic interconnection. But now just the opposite is happening. If you look at the newspaper, civilization is rife with separation and fracture......" Interview with Will Alexander, Rain Taxi Sunrise in Armageddon is a work of blistering, sibyllic, incensed imagination. Will Alexander's thicketed prose advances lexical ignitions of astounding angle and amplitude. Nathaniel Mackey, author of Splay Anthem Restless. riveting. Unnerving. Wilson Harris, author of Dark Jester On one level, Alexander is like watching a new plant grow in a speeded-up film, in which all shoots, however obscure, appear to contribute to a veering and uncanny structure. On another level, he may be the first major "outsider artist" in American poetry, in as much as his work bears no relationship whatsoever to anyone in the twentieth-century American canon. Whatever he is, he is a force to reckon with, whose self-propelled soarings evoke Simon Rodia's "Watts Towers" as well as Siberian ecstatics. Clayton Eshelman, author of Conductors of the Pit

Daughter

[BLACK AND WHITE EDITION] "Janice Lee is a genius." - Eileen Myles, author of Inferno (a poet's novel) ART: Original Holga photographs by Rochelle Ritchie Spencer SOUND: original music by Resident Anti-Hero "Daughter is quantum. There is a girl, there is an octopus, there is language -- in minimal bursts of physical intensities, their magnitude measured in intimate discretes. Janice Lee's prose is energy transfer of the elementary particles of the matter of language. There is a girl, there is an octopus, there is language, understood at the infinitesimal level. No other book ever written has entered my body and being so physically pure. There is not distance between the state of narrative and the matter of being. I turn the page of her body." - Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Chronology of Water and Reel to Reel "Daughter, the new volume by Janice Lee, seems to rise as intuitive quantum ascent. It is praxis of the marred, of the seemingly uneven. Janice Lee understands that writing cannot exist as narrative outcome. In Daughter there is reckoning with the cosmos as phantom, as something that does and does not exist. Energies appear by means of paradox and evaporation." - poet Will Alexander, author of The Sri Lankan Loxodrome "In Daughter, Janice Lee floods the body of a book with the body of a body, all its hybrid, constantly damaging and mending cells. From field to field among the pages we are subject to a brain-damaged, collide-o-scopic file of some internet-age Acker'd Frankenstein having lived to see god die; and yet still must go on walking in the deity's corpse... The result is a meticulous and terrifying resurrection, a glitchy screamtext passed in dire silence to the reader the way blood passes from mother into child. - Blake Butler, author of There is No Year "Lee's surgical cadences and sharp fragments work here as writing will work-to force attention to detail. Which is the unnatural order of things. - Vanessa Place, author of La Medusa and Dies: A Sentence

At Night on the Sun

Poetry. Drama. African & African American Studies. "The new powerful play by Will Alexander, AT NIGHT ON THE SUN, seems to be the beginning of a new phase in his work as a playwright. After his four earlier plays, that have been collected as INSIDE THE EARTHQUAKE PALACE: 4 PLAYS (Chax Press, 2011), and that may be considered an homage to Federico Garca Lorca, the master of 'mystery plays,' the new play comes close to realize the ideas of Antonin Artaud's 'theatre of cruelty,' although Alexander gives a personal switch to that concept. While Lorca shows in his plays how man falls victim of moral constraints and pitiless fate--as is the case in Alexander's earlier plays--Artaud emphasizes the painful drama of human awareness of his immovable subjection to fate; it is that awareness that shows the cruelty of human existence. Artaud has always stressed the fact that his concept of cruelty as an awareness of fate is much broader than just the experience of sadism or bloodshed. In AT NIGHT ON THE SUN, Alexander evokes the existential struggle between the basic human instinct of destruction, bloodthirstiness and war, and the enlightening discovery of the advantages to mankind of peacefulness and harmonious co-existence. He sets this drama in the ancient Indian empire of Asoka, the legendary ruthless conqueror of all his neighboring states, who unexpectedly decided to stop his reign of war and terror to replace it by a reign of peacefulness between all the peoples of his great empire. His invincible armies were dissolved, to the perplexity of his generals. This revolutionary change of war into peace inflicted a cruel crisis to Asoka's ministers of war. Alexander's play enacts their desperate debates about the loss of their reason for existence, confronted with Asoka's determination to create an empire of peace. AT NIGHT ON THE SUN is a very original philosophic drama, sustained by Will Alexander's wonderful poetic language and his peerless images: it is impressive theatre and extraordinary dramatic poetry."--Laurens Vancrevel "As the curtain rises on Will Alexander's adroit pan-African pageant, courtiers puzzle, stew and snipe over the central mystery of their existence--the absence of King Asoka. Where is he? Can mere ministers of war decide, or do the eerie signals demand the counsel of the magicians? What is he doing, what does he intend? Is intention still on the table? So the old ways play themselves out, but on Asoka's return a table of glittering galaxies play themselves out like cards from the future. Like Lorraine Hansberry's Black Arts Movement era masterpiece Les Blancs, Alexander's AT NIGHT ON THE SUN presents a planet's struggle for self-determination as an occasion for both joy and fear. It is a work of art for our age and for ages yet to come."--Kevin Killian
