British Images of Germany: Admiration, Antagonism & Ambivalence, 1860-1914 is the first full-length cultural history of Britain's relationship with Germany and the Germans in the key period leading up to the First World War. Representing a recent about-face in scholarly appreciations of Anglo-German relations, Richard Scully reassesses the assumption that the relationship in the lead up to 1914 was increasingly fraught and reveals a more complex picture: that a long standing sense of kinship felt by Britons for Germany and the Germans persisted right up to the outbreak of war, even surviving times of acute diplomatic tension. This innovative re-examination incorporates the reading of British images of Germany in maps, travel literature, fiction and political cartoons: forms which have never before been appreciated for the light they shed on this fascinating period of history

English summary: On today's maps for historical research in Europe, images of colonial spaces and colonial history are communicated, transformed and preserved depending, among others things, on each particular national 'colonial past'. In this volume, Mathias Renz analyzes 364 atlases including around 3,500 maps published in 37 different European countries since 1990. In doing so, he addresses both the move towards the correlation between space and history ('spatial turn') as well as the growing importance of visualization as a distinct form of presenting knowledge ('visual /iconic turn'). Mathias Renz analysiert in diesem Buch 364 Geschichtsatlanten bzw. ca. 3.500 Geschichtskarten, publiziert seit 1990 in 37 europaischen Landern.

The new edition of the atlas (first published as The Atlas of Apartheid) presents a comprehensive introduction and detailed analysis of the spatial impact of apartheid in South Africa. It covers the period of the National Party Government of 1948 to 1994, and emphasises the changes and the continuing legacy this presents to South Africans at the start of the 21st century. The Atlas makes the unique contribution of presenting the policy and its impact in visual, spatial forms by including over 70 maps, a highly appropriate method considering that apartheid was about the control of space and specific places.
