"An utterly compelling novel from a brilliant new voice." --M. L. Stedman, author of The Light Between Oceans For generations they've shared the small Maine island of Seven, but the Hillsingers and the Quicks have always kept apart, even since before Jim Hillsinger and Billy Quick married sisters. When Jim is ousted from the CIA under suspicion of treason, he begins to suspect that he has been betrayed--by his brother-in-law, Billy, and also by his own wife, Lila. In retaliation, he decides to carry out an old threat: to send their twelve-year-old son, Catta, to a neighboring island to test his survival skills. Set over three summer days in 1964, Estep Nagy's debut novel moves among the communities of Seven--the families, the servants, and the children--as longstanding tensions become tactical face-offs in which love, loss, and long-held secrets become brutal ammunition. Vividly capturing the rift between the cold warriors of Jim's generation and the rebellious seekers of Catta's, We Shall Not All Sleep is a richly told story of American class, family, and manipulation, and a compelling portrait of a unique and privileged enclave on the brink of dissolution.

Since the Louis Auchincloss collections of the 1950s and 1960s, there have been few collections of legal short fiction written by a practicing American lawyer outside the genres of crime and legal thriller fiction. Here is a new collection by Lowell B. Komie of Chicago, published to celebrate his fiftieth year in the practice of law. Lowell B. Komie's first collection of short stories, The Judge's Chambers, was published by the American Bar Association in 1983. It was the first collection of fiction published by the ABA in its more than 100-year history. His second collection, The Lawyer's Chambers and Other Stories, published by Swordfish Chicago in 1995, won the Carl Sandburg Award for fiction from the Friends of the Chicago Public Library. This new collection of twenty-nine stories, The Legal Fiction of Lowell B. Komie, centered in Chicago, brings together many of the stories in those collections with new stories that have been published since the earlier volumes, the latest having been written in 2004.

Alexei Tolstoy’s writing is primarily focused on the personalities and destinies of his characters caught in the turmoil of historical events. In particular, his trilogy The Ordeal traces the development of the Russian society during the critical years of WWI, the 1917 revolution and the civil war. The novel Sisters may be viewed as an introduction to the plot, where St. Petersburg is expressively described as a bourgeois society with decadent morals: "The spirit of destruction pervaded everything. These were the days when love with all its emotions, was regarded as commonplace and old-fashioned, when people felt not love but desire... Girls concealed their innocence and married couples were not faithful. People invented vices and perversions for themselves - anything, rather than be considered a bore.” The plot of The Sisters revolves around the destiny of the Bulavin sisters, Ekaterina and Dasha, and their history of love, joy, and suffering.

This book describes the many uses and benefits of readers theatre. Readers Theatre is a cooperative or shared reading of a poem, story or lyrics of a favourite song. Two or more readers can take part. Even if a piece is scripted for only two readers, and you want more than two readers to participate, assign parts to a duet or chorus. And there are times when you will want to give a part to a weaker and stronger reader for practice, so that one reader supports the other till both feel comfortable enough to read independently. Simple as that.

A compelling and atmospheric YA story of romance, mystery, and power about a young woman discovering her strength in lush, sultry Venice—from the Printz Honor–winning author of A Heart in a Body in the World. When Charlotte wins a scholarship to a writing workshop in Venice with the charismatic and brilliant Luca Bruni, it’s a dream come true. Writing is her passion, she loves Bruni’s books, and going to that romantic and magical sinking city gives her the chance to solve a long-time family mystery about a Venetian poet deep in their lineage, Isabella Di Angelo, who just might be the real author of a very famous poem. Bruni’s villa on the eerie island of La Calamita is extravagant—lush beyond belief, and the other students are both inspiring and intimidating. Venice itself is beautiful, charming, and seductive, but so is Luca Bruni. As his behavior becomes increasingly unnerving, and as Charlotte begins to unearth the long-lost work of Isabella with the help of sweet, smart Italian Dante, other things begin to rise, too—secrets about the past, and secrets about the present. As the events of the summer build to a shattering climax, Charlotte will be forced to confront some dark truths about the history of powerful men—and about the determination of creative girls—in this stunning new novel from award-winning author Deb Caletti.

When Jesus asked us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and visit the imprisoned, he didn’t mean it literally, right? Kerry Weber, a modern, young, single woman in New York City sets out to see if she can practice the Corporal Works of Mercy in an authentic, personal, meaningful manner while maintaining a full, robust, regular life. Weber, a lay Catholic, explores the Works of Mercy in the real world, with a gut-level honesty and transparency that people of urban, country, and suburban locales alike can relate to. Mercy in the City is for anyone who is struggling to live in a meaningful, merciful way amid the pressures of “real life.” For those who feel they are already overscheduled and too busy, for those who assume that they are not “religious enough” to practice the Works of Mercy, for those who worry that they are alone in their efforts to live an authentic life, Mercy in the City proves that by living as people for others, we learn to connect as people of faith.
