“In her much-needed and brilliant Year of the Witch, Temperance Alden guides readers to observe their own land, celestial cycles, seasonal cycles, and even their own biological cycles to inform their magickal year.”-- Mat Auryn, author of Psychic Witch: A Metaphysical Guide to Meditation, Magick, and Manifestation When we think of the wheel of the year, the Wiccan wheel with its celebrations of the Yule, Beltane, Mabon, and Samhain come to mind. But what about a wheel of the year for the rest of us pagans and witches? As a witch living in sunny South Florida, longtime hereditary witch Temperance Alden has often felt at odds gearing up to celebrate Yule, for example, when it is 76 degrees and sunny outside. Year of the Witch will help readers create their own intuitive practices in harmony with the climate, culture, and local spirits where they live. It’s of interest to witches coming off the Wiccan path and looking for a more personal approach to celebrating the rhythms of nature. Year of the Witch covers all aspects of this new, seasonal practice: The origins of the neo-pagan wheel of the year and why it is still so relevant today Culture, historical facts, and traditions associated with the major ceremonies Basic principles of land-based magick How to intuitively connect to the nature below your feet and the local gods Being a custodian to the land and its impact on our spiritual practice

This epic cultural and historical odyssey unearths the full influence of occult traditions on rock and roll -- from the Beatles to Black Sabbath -- and shows how the marriage between mysticism and music changed our world. From the hoodoo-inspired sounds of Elvis Presley to the Eastern odysseys of George Harrison, from the dark dalliances of Led Zeppelin to the Masonic imagery of today’s hip-hop scene, the occult has long breathed life into rock and hip-hop—and, indeed, esoteric and supernatural traditions are a key ingredient behind the emergence and development of rock and roll. With vivid storytelling and laser-sharp analysis, writer and critic Peter Bebergal illuminates this web of influences to produce the definitive work on how the occult shaped -- and saved -- popular music. As Bebergal explains, occult and mystical ideals gave rock and roll its heart and purpose, making rock into more than just backbeat music, but into a cultural revolution of political, spiritual, sexual, and social liberation.

So what's the matter with you?! why are you still single? why are you single again? why are you married again? where are the kids? & uh... uh... that's not your wife... There's no exception to the rule: we're all idiots. We've fallen in love; we finally talk the correct name in our sleep; so we get hitched, though this is probably a good time to scream Out of the frying pan & into the fire! Marriage is scary, awe-producing, holy, but mostly scary. Desi Hunt, of Misbehavior of the Would-Be Wife, is a housewife but behaves like a typographical error against the backdrop of all traditions: the almost-always-there-but-not-like-really-there-housewife kind of deal. It's like a curse: no one knows what's wrong with her. Apparently, not everyone can do marriage. Desi is completely unmarriageable at the moment: not cool with God right now, being sort of clinically allergic to relationships & stuff. She's been forced [seriously] to crave chastity as a side effect of banging her head on the wall for some bloody answers to Why Marry? Her married life has been an anecdote of the shaggy dog: long, rambling, irrational behavior, & finally an irrelevant conclusion. So what is up with Desi & marriage? For everyone else who's relatively normal compared to her, before marriage equals going to bed with your wife from day number one, just so that you know: marriage is a way of life. True we're only human, we all make mistakes: we can count them by the number of crushed hearts, cold tears, severed relationships, forgotten prayers... Just maybe, for crying out loud, we're willing to fail that many times to understand, & that's huge.

Jan Siegel has created one of the most compelling fantasy series in recent memory. What began with Prospero’s Children and continued with The Dragon Charmer now comes to a dazzling conclusion with The Witch Queen. Magnetically gifted Fern Capel has at last come into her own with her magical powers—and just in time. . . . It is a fearsome world of witches, dragons, and goblins, where a gnarled tree bears fruit of human heads. Fern Capel believes she has left it all behind. But now that world is seeping into modern day England: The witch-queen Morgus, who had imprisoned Fern in the ghostly Otherworld, has returned from countless years of exile beneath the gruesome Eternal Tree. Stalking the twenty-first century in her Prada stilettos, Morgus has the mindset of the Dark Ages and vows to rule the ancient kingdom of Logrez, now modern Britain. Most of all, Morgus wants revenge on Fern Capel. Rejuvenated through sorcery, neither charm nor weapon can harm the witch-queen. She has planted a cutting from the Eternal Tree in the real world and awaits with impatience the ripening of its terrifying bounty. When Fern learns that her enemy cannot be defeated through conventional means, she turns to her best friend, Gaynor, her brother, Will, her old mentor, Ragginbone, and Maldo, the goblin-queen. Together, they track Morgus through London’s high-society parties and seedy, sinister contacts, until they finally draw a magic circle in a Soho basement. Fern Capel knows that survival is not enough: This time she must win. But she does not yet understand how high a price she will have to pay. In this thrilling final novel of her acclaimed trilogy, Jan Siegel takes advantage of her greatest strengths as a writer—weaving magic into a modern-day world and bringing vivid life to a host of characters that readers will not soon forget.

For thousands of years under one deity, humans, animals, and nature coexisted in peace and harmony in the progressive rainforest enclave called Yoyoland. But now, the arrival of a half-human immigrant from the animal kingdom has brought change. Civilization and adherence to one religion, which characterized Yoyoland and stood it apart, has quickly given way to bloodletting, wars, dark forces, sorceries, and witchcraft. A runaway immigrant named Ikiko dishonored the god of her land and was judged in the highest chamber in her kingdom. She exiled herself and immigrated to Yoyoland. She became pregnant and bore a daughter called Aboma. Aboma, a powerful queen of witches, is dominated by evil forces and is pregnant at birth, bearing a son named Ikenga. With her well-trained army of wizards, warlocks and goblins, she ruthlessly fights any religion and deity that are not hers. Enter Elechi: the one-man army and the ordained parson of Yoyoland, who swears an oath to destroy Aboma and any religion and deity that are not his. Birth of the Witch King is the first of four books of the Chronicles of Ikenga. Set in a torturous world of "live and don't let live," it tells of vicious wars, magic, sorceries, the supernatural, and monsters.

The Astronomer and the Witch

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) was one of the most admired astronomers who ever lived and a key figure in the scientific revolution. Perhaps less well known is that in 1615, when Kepler was at the height of his career, his widowed mother Katharina was accused of witchcraft. The proceedings led to a criminal trial that lasted six years, with Kepler conducting his mother's defence. The Astronomer and the Witch pieces together the tale of this extraordinaryepisode in Kepler's life. First and foremost an intense family drama, the story brings to life the world of a small Lutheran community in the heart of Europe at a time of deep religious and political turmoil. Italso offers us a fascinating glimpse into the great astronomer's world view. While advancing rational explanations for the phenomena which his mother's accusers attributed to witchcraft, Kepler nevertheless did not call into question the existence of magic and witches. On the contrary, he clearly believed in them. And, as the story unfolds, it appears that there were moments when even Katharina's children struggled to understand what their mother had done...
